Maybe Tim Schafer Should Have Made a Modern War Sim...

Golgotron takes a minute to reflect back on the performance of Brutal Legend as well as previous games from Tim Schafer.

Golgotron says, "In the world of video games, Tim Schafer is a man that the industry claims to need no introduction. He is the man responsible for games such as Grim Fandango, Psychonauts, and most recently, Brutal Legend. He is a man known for his comic dialogue and imaginative worlds, but should he be working in the video game industry?"

Great games, Low sales, its a shame people can't see how unique his games are.

I think a large part of the problem with his games are the context in which they're received. The sales on his games are reflective of the market he makes his games for, the indy gamer crowed.

I think he'd do wonders at a place like ubisoft, and working on a game akin to prince of persia, with a talented devoted staff behind him, and a publisher keeping his extremities in check.

He just doesn't make games that catch my attention...and that's sort of hard, because I play every genre of games.

JRPG
WRPG
FPS
TPS
Strategy
Sim
Racing
Fighting
MMO
Action
Adventure
Open World
Platformer

And any and all mixes between. A recap of 2009 for me on games I bought:

Blazblue
inFAMOUS
Killzone 2
Modern Warfare 2
Uncharted 2
Demon's Souls
FF13 (Japanese version)

2008 had some variety where I even did survival horror by buying Dead Space day 1, and I really don't like that genre, but I loved Dead Space.

He just needs to make a smash franchise like the things I mentioned. You can be as talented as you want, but if you keep making really niche things it's hard to give a crap about your next project or you as a developer. :/

I just wish he had skipped the RTS aspect completely. It ruined the experience for me.

Brutal Legend in my opinion wasn't the type of game to fly off shelves at the $60 pricepoint, $40-50 seems like a better fit for it, I think when it comes down to that point it will begin to sell.

Regardless, I'm sure it will break 1 million in its lifetime, the best selling Tim Schafer game in quite some time.

The reason I haven't got Brutal Legend is because I don't like RTS games. The other parts of the game look great and I like Heavy Metal also, it's just the RTS bit puts me off.

This game...holy heck. Makes me feel old.

I loved that game. Unlocked every song

MadLad1498d ago

Liked the aesthetic, tone, humor, and action combat.
Didn't care for the RTS elements.

Never cared to finish it.

Yeah they marketed the game like it was a Heavy Metal GTA-ish adventure. And at the beginning of the game that's what it was. The game fell apart when the half-baked RTS stuff came in. I'd be interested in a reboot or sequel, but just go full action adventure and ditch the RTS. There really is something there with the Heavy Metal theme.

Ryushaa1498d ago

I feel you. I just hacked the game to have infinite life/RTS resources

PS360 gen was special, then again it was still the mid 2000s. Everything went to shite in the teens

I think that was the breaker for Doublefine's creative ambitions and their mixing of genres (which was getting kinda stale). It was a nice to look at but it was more of a tribute to the many things Tim loves, was influenced by and has great admiration for....but the forced RTS stuff was like a drinking buddy's "great idea" that never should have come to light. The game seemed a lot more vast, but it ended pretty quickly too. And Jack Black. As much as I don't care for him as an actor (annoying and requires constant attention), this was absolutely made with him in mind and it worked. I mean come on, Tenacious D? For as Metal as this game was trying to be, even comically, it did little more than meow.
