I own an Xbox360, but I'm not an HD-DVD fanboy. I really don't care which format becomes the next universal disc format.
The effort was mde by SONY to include the Blu Ray player in the PS3, but even if Blu Ray were to fail, the PS3 can still utilize the disc space for games. The PS3 will not die without Blu Ray movie support, although it would certainly help them if Blu Ray became the standard.
I'm just tired of this whole "format war" and I'd like to be able to move forward and buy new hardware that I know will be supported in 3 years.

ERT Weekly says 60% of people think HD-DVD is better! Blu-ray is doomed! *sarcastic comment for the day* What happened, only 5 people voted and 3 of the 5 liked HD-DVD?

Not only is this old news, but it comes from the most unreliable source on the net (a site that uses words such as "HORRIBLE" on their headlines).

This is old news because we already knew Toshiba wants to include HD-DVD in every laptop. Assuming that they were the only PC vendors to sell a next-gen format with their computers, how is that gonna help? People watch movies at home on their stand alone or console; very few do it on PCs, much less will do it on laptops. But that's still assuming they're the only ones in the market to do so, which is not true. Sony is selling blu-ray with their high-end PCs and laptops. They could just add them to more computers by holiday season. Dell supports blu-ray, and HP is already shipping "Super Multi Blu
". Mac also supports Blu-ray. So, Toshiba is alone on this one. I love it how the writer ends up speculating about Acer adding an HD-DVD drive, as if they were an important manufacturer.

As I said, HP supporting "Super Multi Blu" means they're supporting Blu-ray and HD-DVD. It's not a set of words I invented, it's a product made by LG that reads both blu-ray and HD-DVD. So, I did imply HP supports HD-DVD.

By the way, the Elite is sold out because it wasn't produced en mass (nice marketing tactic, microsoft; make your user base believe you're sold out), because it is for enthusiasts, for those that were on the fence for the lack of technology, for collectors and for fanboys. That's how few were produced. You really think that's the one that sells the most? Hell, even the HDMI output is crippled, and it's pretty much worthless if it doesn't have a next-gen format out of the box.

The reason I say it's worthless is that why would I need HDMI if I don't have a next-gen format? Especially on a console that only has HDMI on the minority of SKUs. It's WORTHLESS, unless studios decide they wanna activate DRM. If that happens, most Xbox 360 users will be screwed; so yeah, HDMI worked, but only for the minority. On the other hand, HDMI is not worthless for PS3, as it can deliver 7.1 uncompressed audio for games (example: LAIR), on 360 it just isn't worth it to program for (it's not even HDMI 1.3, so who knows if it's even capable of that).

Did it ever ocurr to you that most people watch movies at home, or with small portable video players? Even fewer have their media centers connected to their Home Theatre. But a Laptop, due to its hardware constraints can hardly act as a media center. A laptop does benefit from storage though; but if you're going for storage, Blu-ray is definitely the way to go.

For what I just told you, Acer will not be the next Magnavox/RCA/LG/Vizio, and also because they are owned by Telmex and they have no business whatsoever on format wars. Magnavox/RCA/Whatever might have huge marketshare for cheap DVD players, but you know how much Acer has for market share? Yeah, absolutely nothing. Well, not nothing, but the marketshare on PCs and laptops are mainly Dell, HP, Sony, Toshiba and Apple. Everything else is niche. Dell is the one with most marketshare and they support blu-ray only.

I love it how people want to shut "Sony protection group" up, but they listen to troll websites like "The inquirer", and take whatever they say as gospel, if it favors their opinions.

I just read your response to someone, below and what you're saying is wrong. It's useless for Toshiba to put an HD-DVD in every laptop if nobody will buy movies for those, if Blu-ray is the storage format of choice (it's even cheaper, and it's better storagewise), and if there's no software on HD-DVD. The reason most computers have DVD now is not because people watch movies on their computers (unless they're media centers, and frankly those are very few; NOT laptops), but because its good for storage, and the number one reason is software. On storage it has lost already, and there's already software on Blu-ray (only compatible with PS3 of course, but HD-DVD doesn't seem to be having content other than movies any time soon).

Even if they put a HD-DVD player in every Laptop it will not matter that much. Laptops aren't used primarily to connect to big HDTV sets but the PS3 is. So they can sell 10 million HD-DVD Laptops and take a lost and only 500 thousand actually use the HD-DVD player for movies. I wouldn't buy an HD-DVD movie just for my Laptop I would download the movie or watch a dvd. It's not the same experience on a laptop, no surround, small screen. I watch my blu-rays on my 42 inch set with surround and it is like a theater and that is what people are expecting when they watch HD films. Toshiba will take a huge lost with this one and I am sure there shareholders will not be happy.

1)if Toshiba sells around 10 million laptops a year with HD-DVD drives, how does that format lose?

3)is the clear winner simple old DVD just because this all gets confusing? Sony wins for home entertainment while HD-DVD wins the business sector because of cheap storage?

Was really crappy. Other then spinning the fact that they think toshiba making the drives standard is a secret weapon is actually not a bold move by any means necessary. Its a desperation move. Now they are forcing you to use the drive. If they offer this feature without any additional cost then maybe it might work. But i doubt it. Toshiba is loosing millions over the cost of the drive just like SONY. Im not to fond of there laptop cooling design. Alot of there models are VERY prone to over heating. This standard drive could really do more damage if they don't fix it. For there customer sake.

How many laptops did sony sell? Sony laptops already have BR players in some of them. I think they could easily counter this toshiba move. I don't think it's a weapon at all. Maybe a flare.

i dont see the point of this. if toshiba made all their drives hd-dvd, so would sony. sony makes laptops too. its not like sony would have no way to fight back against this action.

There it goes, read it again, It started with "Even if they put a HD-DVD player in every Laptop it will not matter that much"(That's why I commented) solidt12 stated what he rather do, or like to do, vs watching a HD movie on a laptop. AGAIN, as if, it makes a difference(you as well Virtual) as to what others, that like to watch movies on a laptop would rather preffer, when away from the home BIG screen. I know a lot people that do watching movies on their laptops, well I'm also one of them. Like I stated a 17inch 1900X1200 screen works wonders with HD content. Even a 15incher is not too shabby.

It would be stupid for me to say watching movies on a Laptop is better than a 50 inch HDTV. Wouldn't it? That's not what I'm arguing. Whether you or your partner thinks it makes a big difference reffering to the title of this article, and Toshiba putting in an HD-DVD DRIVE in their laptops can only help a loosing battle, as we know Blue-Ray has more support, which is the biggerst PERK. You defend Bluray which is the very reason why PS3 is failing miserably. I got news for you PS3 is about business. And that business is Bluray....Not games, or fanboys,.....Bluray.....

The main problem Is that Sony placed Blu ray first and gamers second. You heard the arrogance " We can sell 5 million PS3s with no games." And for the most part they were right. People don't seem to realize that the real battle is between Sony and Toshiba. Microsoft is more of a hindrance. Sonys biggest money maker is their games division, they want to change that with pushing Bluray technology in the PS3. Bluray isn't needed for games, they just want to sell their Blu ray movies through the PS brand name. Its a lot easier to introduce a new product(Bluray movies) through an already established one(playstation). If they wouldn't have tried to push Bluray on the public the PS3 most likely would have been a success. These are interesting articles that explains these points very clearly................

This is what I call brilliant strategy, which Sony fans will never understand.

Sony is bleeding dry from the initial high production costs of including Blu-ray in PS3, and the gamble hasn't paid off 'cos PS3 is selling like yesterday's poo thanks to Microsoft and Nintendo.

The production cost of HD-DVDs have gone down by now, so Toshiba won't have to cushion as much losses by including HD-DVD players in their laptops. We all know Toshiba laptops will sell like hotcakes, so the early PS3-advantage will be obliterated in a blink of an eye and HD-DVD will prevail... unless Sony includes Blu-ray in Vaio.

But if Sony do that, they suffer even more losses and will go into bankrupty in no time.

Sony's in a real sh!tty position lol! And they deserve just that for trying to fight 2 wars on 1 front. What fools!

Xbox360 is leading insales, it has rumble, it has the better controller, it has everything the ps3 has minus the included wifi or hddvd which you can buy.

It has gears of war and halo3, gears has sold more then you can count, so will halo.

the 360has the highest atach rate, it has over 6 million live users, it has a better marketplace, it has better games as of now, it had more games during the same period as the ps3 .

It has more exclusives then xbox1.
It has 1080p and true surround sound, it comes with hd cables and a headset, it has a better online experience, it has movies,tv shows and more arcade games, the ps3 still has no games nor is the ps3store anyting to right home about and most ps3's are collecting dust like mine waiting for games.

As of nw the 360 is destroying the ps3 an has the games yet you bash something becuase your simply childish. you most likely didnt even pay for your own system.

You have a point there, but the format war is not just about movies. Same argument for PS3 isn't it, that Blu-ray was meant for storage of data for games and not movies?

top games will come from in house with the exception of a few and if they haven,t the space on these platforms the easy option comes up
