2009's Saddest Studio Closures

Left 4 Dead 2, Modern Warfare 2, Assassin's Creed 2, and Uncharted 2 made 2009 a year of epic sequels. Too bad none of the studios in this feature will be releasing any sequels, ever…at least not in their original forms. 2009, like 2008, was a rough economic year, and led to the demise of multiple influential and promising developers.

3D Realms ISN'T dead, they just suffered massive layoffs, they still have a staff of two or three people left that manage the IP's and such.

Hence they shouldn't be included on this list, the writer even mentions the non closure!

Guitarded6047d ago

all of the people who created the games are gone. Company officers and administrative staff sitting on IP's is all that is left at this point. Is that not essentially the same thing as closing the studio?

HolyOrangeCows6047d ago

Ensemble Studios. RIP.

Age of Empires 2 is still one of my favorite games of all time.

Elven66047d ago

Don't know why I got a disagree for stating the facts. =/

Guitarded: Yes but 3D Realms has been doing this for a while now, they would come up with ideas, develop characters, etc and give them to different studios to develop. Max Payne, Prey, etc are recent examples of games thought of by 3D Realms but developed by a different studio.

The PSP/DS Duke Nukem games are also examples, I'd rather have "3D Realms" own the titles than them being split up and spread out all over the place.

Pandemic was a big disappointing, as I enjoyed Mercs 1.

HolyOrangeCows6047d ago

Microsft closed down Ensemble studios after making them create Milk Wars.

What a load of crap, MS.

Elven66047d ago

"Milk Wars"? Right, since the game was so crap right? 82 Metacritic rating, millions of copies sold, various DLC packs, post release support, etc. A perfect swan song for a fantastic developer.

HolyOrangeCows6047d ago

But I was a fan of RTS games before this "gen" and before they released a Halo themed one.

Successful or not, it was still a simplistic borefest.

Elven66047d ago

So was I, Halo Wars is really the first RTS of it's kind to work on a console so well to this extent.

Were you really expecting a mouse and keyboard genre to transition fully to a console with a 1:1 ratio?

HolyOrangeCows6047d ago

Just because it's "Good for a console RTS", doesn't mean it's a good game in itself.

That's like praising a FPS on PSP, solely because it's "Good for a PSP shooter"

Elven66047d ago

Even if it was on PC, it wouldn't have a bad game either, the story was pretty good but I agree that you had to be somewhat of a Halo fan to enjoy parts of it.

The fact that you can play it without fumbling around with the controls is a huge leap of RTS titles using a controller, asides from controls, it's still a good game in my opinion.

"Be creative 99% of the time" – Glen Schofield on how creativity can help fix AAA industry woes

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

Scissorman69d ago

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
