IGN: Shadow Run review

June 4, 2007 - From a distance, Shadowrun seems like a total calamity. The intellectual property (IP) was ripped from its pen and paper, role-playing roots, affixed to a skeletal online arena shooter, and given the visual character of an early-90s game box. It gets worse when you consider Microsoft is using Shadowrun, a game peppered with superficial pockmarks, as a launch vehicle for its Vista-only Games for Windows Live service. The service is supposed to mimic what Xbox 360 users already enjoy on their consoles, but unfortunately GFWL in its current state is a terrifically bastardized variation of the excellent console version, something no money-savvy PC gamer should bother shelling out 50 bucks for. While you could still use the Xbox Live Silver for free, the privileges allowed under such an account level are painfully limiting. You need Gold level if you really want to play, and for that you need to spend 100 dollars on a meager gaming package and a subscription to an online service that feels more like a beta test than a full launch.

we have covered all the shadowrun reviews possible!

PhilHarrison6868d ago

shadowrun is a strange looking game I think it will look quite good when we put it on the playstation network

Kyur4ThePain6868d ago

if you put that cr@p on the PSN!

IGN Reviews sucke even moreso!

Let's look at Saints Row review by IGN; Presentation 9.0 - Shadowrun 4.5 cause they had problems searching for games??!! I guess they never played Saints Row online. Furthermore, they called Saints Row online "great". RUFKM???

Games...or at least 360 games need to have 2 SEPERATE reviews. One for single-player and one for online multiplayer.

IRISHCALIBER6868d ago

...to give a good review because the title is such a departure from the originally named intellectual pen and paper property that has been enjoyed by geeks since the 80's. The game play is extremely fun and addictive and requires complete team work, to review this poorly shows a strong bias nature by the reviewing sites. The learning curve is about an hour for a full understanding of all mechanics. This will also hurt the review as these guys probably never fully learned how to play and only did so for a short time. Although every review I've read has said the game play was fun and shows longevity. I think the menus, announcer and matchmaking as well as the game play flows like Halo meets a MMORPG party system. The way each person picks different magic and weapons to aid the party really makes this game great. I say 9.0 for an overall awesome game!

to say it is great is a stretch. Only 3 gameplay modes. Graphics are porous. Animations are even worse(climbing ladders), in fact, the technical portion of the game seems rushed all together. If the server quits, you are screwed. The game isn't as balanced as it should be. No single player missions and the limited maps make the game seem very short and stale after a few days. Don't even get me started on joining a game with a party as it will often split you and your friends to "balance" the room. That defeats the purpose of having a friends list if you ask me.

It reminds me of Crackdown in that it just feels incomplete. It actually feels more incomplete than Crackdown.

I'll definitely recommend this game as a rental as it is fun, but the gameplay gets boring after a few days. I don't think the low scores are unfounded, but the gameplay does work...just too much of the same.

Yes! But don’t water it down or make it an MP competitive shooter. I’d love a Cyberpunk 2077 level Shadowrun game.

anast587d ago

This would be awesome, but let's see what they can do with Avowed first. I don't think the talent is there anymore to make a deep RPG.

OneLove587d ago

They just made the outer worlds👀

anast586d ago (Edited 586d ago )

Outer Worlds is extremely average.

TheNamelessOne587d ago

What do you mean? They still have the OGs like Josh Sawyer, Tim Cain and Leonard Boyarski as acting design leads on all of their projects. A lot of the veteran talent have remained at the studio.

anast586d ago

The faces can be there, it doesn't mean the talent is. I suppose we'll see.

TheNamelessOne585d ago (Edited 585d ago )

@anast

All the creative leads of classics like NeverwinterNights 2, Kotor 2, New Vegas, then to Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2; and modern games like Pentiment and Outerworlds; all very legitimate, deep RPGs; them being there, doing as they always have, means we need to question whether the "talent" is there to make deep RPGs. Definitely makes sense, as long as you don't think about it.

Shadowrun would be a nice game to get the series going again.

ShadowRun - An Xbox 360 Classic Left to Rot

ShadowRun arrived in 2007 and is still played by a core audience on modern consoles and PC today, despite a bungled launch.

coolbeans816d ago

Played it a few months back. Not a stellar mp game at its time, but still genuine & janky fun.

Sciurus_vulgaris816d ago

I have never played Shadowrun. However, the universe of Shadowrun seems like a good setting for various game genres. The franchise combines traditional fantasy tropes with cyberpunk science fiction.

Rebel_Scum815d ago

Yeah since the megadrive game I’ve always thought how cool the setting and premise is but the game never really delivers on gameplay.

ocelot07815d ago (Edited 815d ago )

Really enjoyed this back on 360. Was one of the first pc games I played as well. Nice to see it's still online I'm going to have to see about getting a copy on pc again.

Edit: is this backward compatible with series X?

Gcayton1815d ago

Fun game... just not Shadowrun.

porkChop815d ago

The Shadowrun RPGs from Harebrained Schemes were great, but that IP is just begging for a massive, Cyberpunk 2077-style game. Open world action RPG epic with a healthy dose of immersive sim goodness.

shinoff2183812d ago

That could turn out really good for real.

The 7 Best Xbox 360 Games - Console Exclusives Win the Day

The Xbox 360 was a fantastic console in its day with some truly classic titles, but what are the seven best games for the console?

DrDoomer843d ago

I'm pretty used to these lists being bad, but this one is particularly s#ite.

raWfodog842d ago

I think Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon should have been added to the list.

BrainSyphoned843d ago

I'll go with,
Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Culdcept Saga, Shadow Complex, Ace Combat 6 with the flight stick,A Kingdom for Keflings, A World of Keflings.
Bonus Kinect Games: Happy Action Theater and Sesame Street.
*Skyrim was so bad on PS3 that it almost deserves to be #1*

Husker42c843d ago

I really loved Shadow Complex.

P_Bomb842d ago

Ah yes, Shadow Complex! Good indies back in the day. Summer of Arcade. I enjoyed Trials Evolution as well.

ChasterMies843d ago (Edited 843d ago )

Was this made by a.i.? No human being would put Shadowrun, Fable III, and Splinter Cell: Conviction into a list of the 7 best Xbox 360 games.

Abnor_Mal843d ago (Edited 843d ago )

Would love to play Ace Combat6 on PlayStation, but Xbox decided to buy exclusivity and keep it off a competing platform.

The only mainline game I never played except for one level at a friends place. Game sold less than any other in the series if I remember correctly.

darthv72842d ago

360 had Namco hitters AC6 and RR6... both quality titles. You should at least bust out the 360 for AC6 if you can score the flight stick. Its great.

Hofstaderman842d ago

When the current gen XBOX offering is so lacking people need to refer to games released two generations back....

Profchaos842d ago (Edited 842d ago )

It's a nostalgia peice same reason we get thousands of YouTube videos on sega genisis. Something people have fond memories for but the era is long gone.

It's xboxs golden year imo it was their genisis years the time where they stuck it to the market leaders Sony.

BehindTheRows842d ago

They stuck nothing. Sony screwed themselves giving Xbox an opening. They would have gotten the usual smack down if the PS3 had launched at $399 and was easier to develop for.
