The game is Great. i'de give it an 8.5 in my book, but its Definately overhyped. especially with the amount of Marketing & Advertisements appearing everywhere.

Call of Duty is synonymous with 'Over-hyped'

I finally get to play half of the game today and while it is fun it's nothing amazing really. Definitely not a GOTY worthy title.

It's defiantly not as good as the reviews say but better than most games at 60 bucks.

I prefer MW1's online though.

The single player was over-hyped saying it will be 100times better than killzone 2 but i didn't find it even near. But the story and actions sequence was good thought and even from Captain Price prison mission. Multiplayer is the fun part.

its a bit overhyped, but its a good game, the sp was short but have good action scenes and multiplayer is addciting. most of the people who dislike this game are pc gamers and hardcore ps3 fanboys.

Its one of the most overhyped series of all times... Giving a game that is in general just a copy of its predecessor a perfect score is retarded. I'm not saying it's a bad game, its just not groundbreaking. Every part in the series is "the same" with minor upgrades.

And if the story in singleplayer in MW1 was good the story in MW2 is so terribly stupid... Oh god its just retarded beyond words...

HOWEVER it doesnt stop being a great game. But the SP was flat out disappointing and the additions to the multiplayer is not worth its attention at all.

Know what pisses me off is the review scores, no doubt its good, i would honestly think it deserves about a 85-90 average.

Yup. It's a 7 or 8 at the very best. It's the hype that's getting all these people to buy it. I mean look at how IGN reviewed it. 10 in graphics, and they gave KZ2 a 9.5.

Like any games that's even half-popular some guys comes along posing the question if it's overhyped. I really don't think MW2 is overhyped at all.

It received FAR too much hate and STILL does for it to be considered overrated. If anything, this game can be considered under appreciated, but not really, the sales speak for itself. The game is clearly loved and I'm sure it's because people are finding it fun.

I dont think it was overrated. I was disappointed with the campaign but the multiplayer is even more addicting as the first one.

1. the story doesn't make sense, plain and simple. He killed a bunch of russian civilians at an airport but for some reason they hate Americans? Wasn't Zahkiev in the first game bad, why does he have a monument all of a sudden?

2. the single player gameplay is poorly designed, half the time you have no clue what's happening, or where you to go. For example there are parts of missions telling you to take out target X, but the environment is littered with different items, movable turrets, rocket launchers and sniper-rifles. There's no indication of the target so what are you supposed to use?

3.There's way to much happening on screen at once. How the hell do you know what to shoot when there's smoke everywhere, paper flapping about, civilians running around, 15 textures on every building and enemies popping out of no where.

4. Sound design is poor, half the time the commands are coming in when you can't hear what your objectives are because 15000 things are blowing up or flying over you or shooting at you.

5. Half the time you have no clue what you're doing. Take the rio mission, you're told to shoot the one guy in the leg, then you're told not to injure the next guy. Why give two completely different mission objectives like that?

6. the levels are either extremely claustrophobic in that you can't move without being shot from 15 angles, or they have some retarded open world ish setting which are just as confusing, and feature hidden glass walls, like bushes marines can't pass through.

7. the game is really short, it feels like more of an expansion pack then both halo 3:odst and l4d2.

8. the game lacks consistency in everything, you're every at once. In the single chapter you go to Rio, Afghanistan, russia, and a russian airport. I found this confusing visually and story wise and after that I honestly lost almost all interest in what I was doing.

Most if not all of my deaths were from frustration in mission objective and level design. Not to mention some completely random events like being by a ladder and being butt-rushed without any warning or freak grenades. Random deaths are not fun.

That said the game features impeccable production values, graphics and is extremely cinematic. The controls are tight and responsive, the online is a blast and the mission variety is much appreciated. If only they'd fix all the issues with the overall level/mission design and story it'd be a game worthy of the scores it gets. Honestly the game is nothing more then a solid 8-8.5 title.

Of course it is. But people who b**ch and moan (like me) were the ones stupid enough to buy it day 1 and not wait for ACTUAL TRUE and HONEST reviews to come out.

I asked my friend what made him finally decide to get the game, and he said the IGN review.
After laughing a few moments I said "oh right, because they gave GTA IV a perfect score, so it makes since that you'd wait until they voice their opinion of THIS game..."

500 million in 5-6 days.

It's more about franchises in my opinion, Call Of Duty is a well renowned series thats been around awhile and has never generally disappointed the masses, like Halo or GTA for example (although i hate Halo I can't deny it's success) so people naturally get excited and "hyped" about the next installment.

Then you have games like Demon's Souls for example, it's new and most who have played it loved it, now if there is a sequel it will attract hype because it's a good game loved by many and those folks will hype up the sequel and be excited about it.

Pretty simple really.

Take one look at BFBC2. Then play the demo and you'll see why you even have ask is CODMW2 over hyped. Hell , yes it is. It's no BFBC2. That's no hate either. Just one is way above the other in game development and features.

Is the sky blue and the grass green? Hell yeah! MW2 is all hype cause without it you would just have the first MW.

personally, i think games like Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 blow Modern Warfare 2 away, but i'd be lying if i said that Modern Warfare 2 was a bad game.

it's most certainly a very good FPS. it doesn't deserve the adoring praise and adulation it gets, but it's a very good FPS title.

again: "overhyped" does not mean "bad." it simply means that people's excitement got the better of them and they got carried away with expressing how quality the game was.

i think GTAIV is a good game. it's not perfect, no, but i think it's one of the best representations of what a sandbox game can be this generation. Rockstar put an insane amount of thought and detail into the game's engine and the setting/atmosphere of GTAIV. the gameplay was a bit too "real" for the GTA series, and i think the style of GTAIV would have been better suited to a new IP. it lacked the "cartoony" quality the other GTA's had, but it certainly wasn't a sh*t game. it was, however, insanely overhyped. people now hate on GTAIV because of hindsight. i think it opened the door and set the standard for how sandbox worlds should be, not the bland, empty worlds that most Activision sandbox games are (Spider-Man, Prototype, etc).

MGS4 was overhyped, but still one of the best games of all time. it's one of the few games that actually met and exceeded expectations game play wise, but it was still overhyped.

Halo is overhyped. they are still fun, enjoyable games.

lots of games get overhyped, many of them do not meet the hype, but SOME DO, and even if they don't, it doesn't mean they are bad games.

Is MW overhyped?
MW2 sold milions of copies on day 1. And this is mainly due to brand power. Reviews and marketing of course will have an additional effect, but the base is very simple: people wanted another MW.

While i enjoyed a lot MW (140+ hours or so), and also liked CODW@W (70+), i have the feeling that i will get bored in a few hours with MW2, because the core mechanics are exactly the same. In fact i popped in MW and stopped after 10 mn. And this (plus the fact that there are many great games out now) is why i'm one of those few dozens of humans that haven't bought MW2.

I found more interesting the author's analysis of MW2 under the eyes of a single player campaign gamer. He states the game deserves something in between a six and seven. Even that would be too much in my opinion. As others pointed out, the story is not coherent and the campaign level design is rather weak. Considering how short the game is, six is probably the top for MW2. It is unfortunate that online multiplayer shooters became so popular, as it is obviously a cheaper development path than a strong and lengthy campaign mode. As such, gamers fans of single player campaigns will soon have nothing to play with -- at least nothing worthy of what they charge nowadays.

How can it be over hyped when it sells boat loads of games. Killzone 2 is the perfect example of a game that was hyped to hell and failed to deliver in the end with lower than expected sales. Halo 3 on the hand is one of the rare times when a game actually meets and exceeds the hype. 10 million sold and still growing to this day proves this.

I played Call of Duty 4 18 days playing time online. I'm on 15 hours on MW2 and the novelty's worn off, I'm bored. Selling it tomorrow and preordering Mass Effect 2 with the money :)

It's hard to say if it's overhyped or not. I mean, CoD4 is the reason this game is getting so much attention, and I went back and replayed CoD4's campaign, and I have to say that it is quite a bit better than MW2's campaign. The awesomeness of CoD4's campaign merits the hype for MW2, in my opinion, but I don't think the campaign lived up to my personal expectations. The story wasn't as over the top as MW2's and felt a bit more realistic. MW2 didn't really have any jaw dropping moments that really resonated with me (yet) like CoD4's "All Ghillied Up" and "Shock and Awe" missions. Those are two of the most memorable gaming experiences I've had.

BUT, all that being said, MW2'ss MP is quite a bit better than CoD4's, and it has Spec Ops, which is a blast.

Remember when Activision was good?

Having just witnessed it's mundane and often lacking entirety,I can say with confidence,yes.It is by no means "poor" but at the same time it is by no means " excellent".Lacking AI,bland environments,endless enemies spawning in hidden corners that can be killed only by "progress",shoot,kil l,repeat- as is standard fare,no deviation allowed........*sigh*.A near perfect continuation of Cod4,for better or worse.
A solid 7.5/10.I preferred KZ2,it was a refreshing take on the genre.
My opinion,not the 'final and definitive' word passed through congress just this morning.Take it in stride =)

I can't believe a game with a half-assed single player mode (that clocks in at only 4 hours) and a sh!tty grenade spamming lag fest of a multiplayer mode got 9's and 10's.

I agree. It was overhyped. I mean MP is great as it was on MW1, but after playing through the SP I was left asking to myself "is this it?" not only on the whole game, but also on almost every level. Only a few levels really stand out, and they are done in a flash (and yeah, I play all my games in the hardest setting from the beginning).

I am BETA testing BFBC2, re-playing through Uncharted 2, KZ 2 , COD4 MW1 and going through AC2 and I have to say that all those games are better gaming experiences than the MW2 SP campaign. I agree with the author, take MP out and this game goes from an 9/10 to a 6/10.

This is no surprise really at all in anyway but I do find it hilarious they feel the need to put all the blame of cheating on PC gamers especially since it was Microsoft that was behind the begging for cross-platform play after all they did get exactly what they wanted. Microsoft ask for them PC Cheaters and they got the PC Cheaters but back to the hilarious part why is it that Microsoft, Activision, Xbox and PlayStation gamers can detets them talented PC Cheaters but accept the Console cheaters using modded controllers that can access many if not all the PC cheats?
No matter what Microsoft does, no matter the steps they take, no matter the BS claims that Microsoft makes of getting rid of the cheaters. The cheaters will always be 1 to 15 steps ahead of Microsoft and they'll always rule the Call of Duty games. There's only 1 way a gamer console or PC can avoid the cheating in Call of Duty.......move on and stop playing it!
or, OR!!!! do what them PC Cheaters and the Console modded controller cheaters did when the finally realized Microsoft and Activision can 1- do a damn thing about it or 2- Microsoft nor Activision gives a $hit about the in-game cheating they only care about the $$money$$ the franchise brings in.......So you got to do what these great PC and Console cheating gamers did\do..........CHEAT!

I don't get why people cheat on an online game, in single player ones I get, you want to progress in the game but somehow you can't, but on online games what's the point? I do not play online multiplayer games so maybe I'm not getting something.
