Is Modern Warfare 2 Really Over-hyped?

PS3Informer writes, "I enjoy a FPS and this one looked particularly good considering all of the hype leading up to its release, the heritage of the series and general pre-fight talk from the development team. Unfortunately, after playing a good bit of the game I have come away
slightly underwhelmed."

hell yeah it's overhyped. and it's gonna shatter sales records too

tinman_licks6019d ago

Clearly, you have not played the game.

Madusha6019d ago

It was very very slightly overhpyed. The game wasn't too bad but the critics gave it perfect scores because of all the hype. Now we are starting to see a few lower, but still good scores.

Saaking6019d ago

Um, of COURSE it is. It's one of the most overhyped games in history.

CyberCam6019d ago (Edited 6019d ago )

IMO yes, (not saying I'm right or wrong) in my view there are other games out there that are more deserving of the praise that MW2 gets. MW2 is actually a very bad game for the industry... instead of innovating the genre, most devs (not all) will try to copy the success of the one trick pony of IW's masterpiece and we'll be stuck in a COD FPS game type rut for some years to come.

Gaming is supposed to move forward by a fairly good pace IMO and MW2 did move forward, but not by much. I do realize that it is a sequel but in terms of some other game sequels, it falls short on progress.

Please don't get me wrong, it is a good game, but not the second coming of JC that everyone (especially the gaming media) makes it out to be.

guitarded776019d ago

It probably recieved the most hype of any game ever.. so there is no way for it not to be a bit over-hyped. That said, it is a good game and the online offers sooo many hours of play that FPS fans can't go wrong.

DevastationEve6019d ago

Overhyped? Sure. Overrated? Nah, it deserves every credit it's been given. But that doesn't mean that it's the BEST FPS out there, it all comes down to preference. I know lots of COD players out there, but not everybody has to believe it's the best.

Hey, good or bad or whatever it's still going to set you back $59.99, so think about it a little if you're still on the fence.

badz1496019d ago

YES, it is over-hyped and for a mere 4H+ campaign, it's a bit over-rated as well! but why am I even bother answering and leave a comment? I don't know, it's kinda fun bashing MW2!

bumnut6019d ago

overhyped, but sadly if people keep waiting outside stores at midnight for mediocre games like mw2, the publishers will carry on releasing this crap every year.

Kassanova076019d ago

It is the most over hyped game in history, hence its sales. Hopefully Battlefield will sell half. I'm in beta and it PAWNS MW2.

BattleAxe6019d ago

The single player campaign is as great as the CoD4, the Spec Ops is pretty fun, but not as fun as Zombies and the multi player is the same as CoD4 with some add-ons. Still a great game, but nothing ground breaking.

I hope the next CoD uses a better engine as Killzone 2, Crysis and even Far Cry 2 look way better.

After playing the game on my friends 360, I think I'm correct in saying this game sucks fat donkey balls.

And on top of the crappy game, just the thought of putting more money in Bobby Kotick's pocket makes me want to hurl. It's cool to want to make more money, but to be a blatent ass hat about it is something else.

APOFISBORICUA6019d ago

IT IS overhyped. It doesnt matter if it sells a billion. Its still an overhyped and overrated game. It doesnt deserves most of the scores it gets. Ohh and before you said I havent played the game, I have both versions the PS3 and 360. I believe the 360 version looks a tad better but overall is the same game. It looks more colorfull than COD 4, thats all. Also I believe thet the best FPS shoter of the year belongs to Killzone 2 as it is an overall better game, and I am a COD fan...but also a gamer. Its a shame Spike disnt nominated KZ2 as overal GOTY and yet they nominate games like LFD2. Well everyone get to your conclusion, disagree all that you want and take my bubbles as always. Its just my opinion and I know some people here cant stand that.

PEACE AND GAMING!!!!

CyberCam6019d ago

Good post and I agree with you 100%!

Valay6019d ago

I would say that it is overhyped a bit.

This is a great reminder of how game sales have become more concentrated in a smaller number of games/series over time. In the PS1/PS2 era a game was a success if it sold a million or a few million copies. The GTA games (3/Vice City/San Andreas) were pretty big outliers in selling as much as they did during the PS2 era. So in the minds of a lot of gamers something like FF VII feels like it was as big of a PS1 game as God of War 2018 was for PS4, but in reality far fewer people bought it (though it has obviously reached additional people through remasters, etc.).

StoneTitan247d ago

this was alwalys the case and will always be the case. with everything

Zerobalance247d ago (Edited 247d ago )

What this says to me is, not many people are buying a PS to play PS exclusives. Like so many false narratives, like Xbox gamers don't buy games! It seems Playstation as a default system is a vanilla system to play call of duty, Minecraft, GTA games and a sports games.

badz149247d ago (Edited 247d ago )

if you look back into the PS history, it has always been the 3rd parties who sells the most games. it was just that the PS1 and PS2 were so dominant that many of those 3rd party games were exclusives. so, back during the PS1 and PS2 days, the strategy was "to sell as many consoles as possible in order to sell more 1st party exclusives" to ride on that wave. The strategy to push many 1st party exclusives to sell consoles only started with the PS3 when many of those prior 3rd party exclusives went multiplat but more accurately, it started with the PSP.

Sony saw with the PSP, which was being trounced in sales by the DS, that 3rd party exclusives are hard to come by if you're not dominating the market. So they started building more 1st party games and when the PS3 were facing difficulties in sales, they knew they had to rely on their own to differentiate the PS3 from the 360. So the strategy back then changed to "release more 1st party exclusives in order to sell more consoles".

the only manufacturer that is still consistently selling their hardware to play 1st party exclusives, is Nintendo, and that was because they gave up the armrace for power thus they can't rely on 3rd parties anymore as all multiplats play better on competing consoles. AND that's also why they are the most ominous in going after emulators and also patent trolling!

so, you're not wrong there, but not an "aha!" moment or anything. it has been this way since the last, at least, 15 years for Playstation.

Deathdeliverer246d ago

@zerobalance

So... what this tells you is that Call of duty, being the absolute check writer that it is, has been outsold by Last of us, God of war, 2 Spider man games..... Saying Playstation exclusives doesn't sell is like saying call of duty doesn't sell because they have outsold some of iterations. Does that make sense to you?

Modern Warfare 3 flooded with cheaters after arrival on Xbox Game Pass

Players are using hacks to gain an advantage in the game, such as aimbots and wall hacks. The first gives a player superhuman aiming abilities, while a wall hack lets you see through walls to gauge where other players are.

“These hacks are typically used by PC players, but those playing on PC via Xbox Game Pass are identified as Xbox players in multiplayer lobbies.”

This is pretty dumb to say the least.

Cacabunga654d ago

All about them headshots for Xbox

badz149654d ago

Gotta pump those numbers up

blackblades654d ago

That's a WTF, they suppose to be labeled as pc users even if its on PC game pass. They mess that up big time.

XiNatsuDragnel655d ago

Oh bad this will be entertaining to watch

ZycoFox654d ago

If AI keeps getting better (and it will) it's just a matter of time before there's more sophisticated cheats even for consoles, and they wouldn't even need to be running on it, I have little doubt about that.

lelo2play655d ago

Don't Gamepass online games have anti-cheat systems?
If not, that's pretty dumb. Microsoft need to fix that asap.

Rynxie654d ago (Edited 654d ago )

They won't ever fix this problem, unless they (developers, publishers, Sony and MS) go after the cheat providers directly. You no longer need to hack consoles to use hacks. During the ps360 days, they were going after cheat devices, but it was a cat and mouse game. These cheating methods were around during those days, it's nothing new, but they kept it under control. Since the PS4/Xbox one generation, they stopped going after these cheating devices and it became widespread. Which I find odd, since they started charging for online play (PS4).

StormSnooper654d ago (Edited 654d ago )

Possibly, this is because the companies were going after cheats because the same cheats were being used to pirate the games, whereas today, the companies use online verification to prevent piracy, thus eliminating the need to go after people who cheat only to gain an advantage in the game. As long as the cheater remains below the radar, and does not completely break the game, the companies look the other way as their wallets are not threatened by it. (that is my completely Uneducated opinion on the matter)

pwnmaster3000654d ago

I mean, COD games was always filled with hackers, nothing new. I can’t blame MS on this. Activision had years to try and fix this. Might take MS some time to make some change.

Rude-ro654d ago

It all depends…
Microsoft’s guidance on how to handle gamepass on pc and their love to force crossplay with pc seems like a them issue.
And they own activision, so it is still a them issue.

StormSnooper654d ago

lol well that sucks.

Is there a reason this happened upon arrival on xbox?
