Unequaled among consoles maybe. When the Playstation 3 launched, it's hardware was already outdated next to high-end PC gaming hardware. The performance of the PS3 today is only awesome if you lie to yourself and decide never to look at PC games. On the other hand, Sony's first party studios are always pushing the envelope with the PS3 hardware, whereas developers for PC usually don't push it as far as they can, with the exception of Crytek with Crysis. So, in that respect, the PS3 first party team are doing more with the hardware than PC developers will ever do with the PC hardware, because the PS3 first party teams are tasked with working on the same hardware for many years and they are challenged to make their game engines more efficient. This is why I am interested in Sony allowing Naughty Dog or Guerrilla Games to work with current PC hardware to see how far they can push it. But, instead I will have to wait for Sony to release the next PS.

Anyone can say anything about the PS4, it's a hell of a long way to come so there's so much speculation as to what MS, Nintendo, and Sony can do.

I'm just hoping for dual 1.3(atleast) HDMI ports and the Dual Cell(one for Processing(like ps3) and then the graphics card is made up of another Cell like the Ps3 was Suppose to have been.

I just hope that the same thing that happen this genaration where many devs didnt know how to work on the PS3, happens again with the PS4. I dont want to see crappy ports.

A few (non-educated) opinions...

1. Don't be surprised if the next round of consoles are released in 2013+ simply because Sony and Microsoft need to make their money back.

2. Microsoft is rich, but they still have to answer to their shareholders who might not be very impressed with the risk / reward in the console business.

I would be very surprised if either company has already signed contracts for the next GPU's this early in development.

I doubt Nintendo, Microsoft or SONY will release any information regarding their next console. Work is un-doubtly in progress, seperate divisions, and a lot not decided yet.

technology in hardware now-a-days is moving forward at tremendous pace, in the next couple of months we could see a revolutionary development in Mixed-GPU's etc.

Don't forget the change in development, and all the "work in progress" what might be decided today, is changed tomorrow. (hope that sounds alright :P)

PowerPVR kick's ass (Shenmue comes to mind).
One issue though remember what happened with the xbox 1 which had a Nvidia GPU. It made backward compatibility difficult on xbox 360 which has an ATI GPU. Till today not all original xbox games work on the 360.

Wow all i have seen about the powerVR series is that those things are integrated gpu in netbooks and are gpu in mobile phones.

So that would probably mean that the ps 4 wont be any stronger then any netbook out there.

If anyone honestly thinks the PS4 will beat a high end gaming rig by then you are smoking crack.
They'll do what they did with the PS3, get good gfx but have hardly anything at 60fps or any type of AF or anti-aliasing, HDR, or any res above 1080p.

And here I was thinking the PS4 was going to revert back to pre-PS3 graphics!!! But now that I now the PS4 is actually going to be better than what we've already had, I'm really excited!!!!!!

Sadly imagination doesnt have the sort of recent experience in building modern day, monolithic, enormous GPUs that nvidia and ati have been doing for a decade now. A modern GPU is a billion transistor plus monster. i would expect 3bn+ designs to be the norm for next gen consoles, as nvidia have a 3bn part out early 2010! Imagination have no such experience with such complex designs.

ATI have already secured the contract for the next xbox, and right now ati are in a superb position in the industry, and well known (to everyone except nvidia fanboys) to be leading the cutting edge of high performance GPU design, especially cost/performance ratio- The prime factor console makers are interested in. Its no coincidence 360s ATI GPU is a design generation ahead of ps3, despite coming out a year earlier....

I would actually expect the next xbox to again be the fastest console and have the most advanced GPU. Cell is still unsuited to gaming. Sony could save money and take a leaf from microsofts book with the original xbox that building a console with well known architecture from off the shelf parts pleases developers. 360 arguably is less powerful than ps3, but the fact that 360 is sooooo much easier to develop for (and cheaper) means it nearly always has its exclusive games out quicker, and multi titles come out better most of the time, if only slightly.

I am a sucker. I check this site every day, but I can't stand articles like this one. The author is obviously a Sony hack. In saying that, I admit that Sony has some awesome games. I own a 360, but the Uncharted games look awesome and Killzone looked amazing as well. That said, this guy doesn't know a thing. No one does. I am sure that someone in all of the big three are designing the next gen, but the PS3 is only three years old and there is no way that Sony has locked in on the specs of a machine that is three years away. If they have, they are dead in the water because so much will change between now and then. Also, this is pure speculation, but I would be shocked if the next PS is based on the Cell. First of all, it won't be state of the art in 2012. I know the Sony hacks think that the Cell is some kind of supercomputer, but do you really want a 2012 console to be built on 2006 technology? That is just stupid. Finally, I know that people in both camps say these things, but I believe that more sony fanboys want MS to drop out of the console race than vice versa. My question is...why would you want this. If you haven't figured it out, competition is good for the consumer. Sony will make you a better product with MS in the fight. You will get less from Sony, not more, if MS is out of the picture. And Ms isn't going anywhere. They are making money, although not until recently and most people said they got in the game to mark a presence in the living room, not necessarily to make money. Its like home depot and lowes. home depot puts stores in some communities knowing that they will never turn a profit. they do so to make sure that a competitor doesn't put one there and therefore, grow. I think that ms is here to make money, but more than anything else, it is to make sure that the post os company doesn't lose the living room to sony and apple.

Simply adding a hightech Graphics Card will not only boost the Graphics department but also makes it possible to fully use the Cell, and offcourse the Cell will get an upgrade like all products get. So the New Cell and the High End Graphics Card is the Death Sentence of the Xbox 1440 ( I took the liberty in going beyond the xbox 720 ;) )

Is that they don't support dx11, and with opengl just completely failing with opengl 3 failing to match any of the features brought about with dx11 leads me to believe that ps4 will not only have matched graphics but will be out-preformed by almost all cards.

not to mention TBR has been around for a long time and has been attempted and dropped by nearly every large chip manu. Including MS, ati, nvidia. Intel has zone rendering which is pretty much the exact same thing.

Am I the only person that knows that the PS4(the one pictured here) was fan concept art. Sony is committed to a ten year life cycle for the PS3. And since the PS3 is selling better and better all the time, and has it's greatest games ahead of it, there is no reason to think that there will be a PS4 any time soon, 2014, 2015 maybe but soon never. The PS3 is still the height of technology, and while I can see nintendo and xbox coming out with blu-ray versions of there systems, I don't see any reason what so ever that sony will come out with another playstation.

The concept art pictured is no proof that sony is coming out with a PS4 anytime soon, I know xbots think that they are dominating so much sony does not have a choice, but that is complete crap. If you look at sales numbers for both systems you will see that microsoft xbox will be in last place for this console cycle by the end of next year, if not sooner. Playstation 3 is the cutting edge of technology, they have everything you need for it built in, and for the foreseeable future there will not be another playstation(2014-2015) is when you may see another system from sony. On the other hand both nintendo and xbox are lacking a blu-ray drive, and blu-ray is what most developers want to go to. It's harder to pirate, and the cost of pirating blu-ray tech is very expensive. Microsoft and Nintendo both have series problems with pirating, but Sony does not.
For the record PS3 is the best console out currently, and the other fanboys can say whatever they want to, but both nintendo and microsoft are very concerned with the Playstations ever building momentum.

A good gaming rig pc is around a thousand dollars, and by this same time next year you will most likely be upgrading so that you can play the latest games. So tack on some more cash, and say what ever you want I know people that upgraded the pc big time to play crysis, but it still didn't run right, and if Crysis is a good game for the pc then you truely don't know gaming. Crysis was complete crap. WoW may have a large community, but for the most part there not gamers the only play Wow(if you only play one game you are not a gamer)
PC's also have crashing problems, and internet connection problems, and add to that the consistent upgrading PC gaming is out, consoles rule the gaming world now.

Imagination Technologies's PowerVR is not even in the same ballpark as Nvidia & ATI Graphics technologies. PowerVR sucks compared to ATI and Nvidia.

Just looking at that PS4 design is making my pants wet. Good LORD that brings new meaning to the word "sexy". Since BR has a pretty solid life span ahead of it, I don't think they will need to add anymore more "CD" formats, therefore production cost shouldn't be a problem. I predict that this will sell between $299.99 - $399.99 and if it does, I can see the downfall of Microsoft's next system.
