Why the Wii Needs a High-Def Visual Upgrade

Nintendo says a high-definition upgrade for the Wii remains a distant future endeavor, dismissing criticism that the system needs a visual boost to be creatively competitive.

Speaking to Kotaku, Nintendo America president Reggie Fils-Aime explained that Nintendo won't move to a 'new generation' unless the current system starts bumping into serious technical road blocks. "What that says is that simply the addition of HD capability will not be the next step for us," he said. "There will be more to it. There will be additional capability. There will be additional elements, and, given that, it is far into the future."

the Wii's graphics processor can display up to 720p/1080i. It just needs to be unlocked. And they will do this when Wii sails start to fall. The original xbox did it with soul caliber 2 and DOA Ultimate. And the ps2 did it with Gran Tourismo 4. They just need a reason. And if people are still buying this thing buy the truck load with it's 480i/p resolution. Then nintendo sees it as no reason to upgrade. It will remain their trump card.

on paper, the wii gpu is very capable of hd resolutions. Now the question is, does the cpu and memory have the bandwidth to support higher res from the gpu?

If ms can add new display resolutions with a fw update...why can't the wii?

You'd think the Wii wasn't the market leader reading crap like this.

This guy seems to forget that Modern Warfare was developed specifically for the 360 architecture and was ported to Wii- similarly with World at War. Also, Resident Evil 5 is apparently now possible on the Wii when during development the Wii "couldn't even run the start menu"...
Also, I hear more and more about Capcom's adaptation of their MT framework to the Wii possibly allowing for the aforementioned RE, as well as Street Fighter IV and Lost Planet for the Wii- not to mention future titles.

This guy talks like Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 are massively creative innovations to gaming when really they are the technologic expansion of the Same Old Stuff. A shiny shooter, and a shiny stealth action-adventure.

And besides the point, the Graphical Prowess of the HD Consoles is rather underwhelming- they all look like Michael Bay productions and are washed out by either grays or browns/tan. You can tell that a lot of games are made using the same engine. This isn't graphical innovation, it's laziness.

it may be the market leader but when you can count the number of games worth playing/owning on 2 hands, it makes for a pretty sad software lineup.

i dont think u can get 720p with YRW rca cables. but the wii and dolphin emulation proved games can be unscaled and look great. but nintendo is playing it smart. right now is not the time for a system 2011 is.

*edit* at above
that was a great comment. lots of it is true. this gen is busy with the same old same old. thats why i like the wii makes devs go out and build from scratch just like the old days. i was impressed when i started computer gaming i had a dual core and a 8800gtx and i was amazed it was a console looking game with a keyboard. since then i upgraded to a 260 and a quad core and ive seen the pc light but i still give consoles love.

Crazy to think the WII is to the Switch 2, as the NES was to the WII back then. 20 Year difference.

My wife asks me to bust it out (heh) everyone once in a while to play bowling and tennis with the kids. There was a ton of slop on it but some good stuff as well.

Wii was great but boy howdy did it cause Microsoft to go on a dark walk with the Kinect and the disastrous XBox One launch that they arguably never recovered from.

Not nostalgic for me.. I was there.. anyone who wasnt a little kid realized it was a gamecube with shit tacked onto it, it was the "joke" system and was well below even the switch in terms of comparing it to the latest machines at the time. The machine was well loved by young people and "casual gamers" who now remember it 20 years on, or in most cases more of its sales came in the 15-20 years ago range not right at launch- but again its not nostalgic for people who were "gamers" then really, just for those who ended up with one in their house, the games , graphics, interface and online features were archaic already in 2006.
