The Canada Examiner writes:With gaming, as with any broad medium, genres come and go. They may not necessarily die off, but the tastes of fans (or the perception creators have of fan tastes) can change as the years go by, and what was once a staple can fall by the wayside. In the current generation of consoles, it seems like the turn-based Japanese RPG is the style of gaming that is now slowly being marginalized. This wasn't always the case, of course. In years past, the turn-based mechanic was almost synonymous with the Japanese role-playing game, and the two concepts were nearly inseparable. Now, even though gamers still have a fair--though admittedly smaller than generations past--amount of selection in the JRPG genre, those games that still use the turn-based mechanic are becoming increasingly rare.

Square Enix launches Final Fantasy X 25th anniversary site, revealing new Nomura art, books, music releases, and merchandise.
Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.
They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

A brutal reset, a smarter story, and a return to what made it great—Mortal Kombat (2011) revived the series.
15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.
Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.
More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.
Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.
All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
Kotor was turn-based. I liked it that way because the game was more focused on exploration and item collection, and character development/upgrades.
As long as DUNGEONS N DRAGONS still has fans, turn-based RPGs will never die.
The entire turned based system in JRPG's was mostly due to constraints of the technology at the time. Dragon Quest coined the system and then Final Fantasy refined it.
As technology grew so did the need to explore new alternatives to the tried and true system, trying to find that balance of full active/turned based.
The extremes being Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy X. One relied on quick action and reflex souly on the players part. The other required a depth of preparation and character management strategy. Both are fun and both have their pro's and con's.
I believe that as developers strive for that perfect blend we will see less and less of the old school turn based combat of the past. The system will always be used as the very foundation for any future endeavors and in that spirit will remain a staple of JRPG's.
Though after so many variations of the system it's always nice when a gem like Dragon Quest 8 comes out and takes you all the way back to the roots.
