PS3 Game Upscaling: Fact or Fiction?

IGN decided to run a couple of PSX and PS2 titles through their paces, testing out the new PS/PS2 Upscaler and PS/PS2 Smoothing features under the Game Setttings menu.

Screenshots after the jump.

FeralPhoenix6946d ago

Well honestly I couldn't see much difference other than some of the upscaled screenshots look a bit more "blurry", but the GoW2 screenshot using progressive scan and widescreen does look a little better although it looks lighter.....or maybe its just me, I'm interested to hear other impressions?

InMyOpinion6946d ago

Upblurred? I agree, GOW 2 was the only game that looked better IMO.

Check that out. Notice the HUGE difference? IGN screens are too small to tell wth is going on. They're also not using 1080p, on their forum they say it's 720p.

Also, notice they don't show the exact same screen back to back? IGN did this bs intentionally to get hits.

BIGBAER6946d ago

The upscaled screens looked worse than the originals. Blurred.

Seraphim6945d ago

as stated, IGN was only using 720p. I'm running 1080p on my Bravia XBR3 and the games look great. DMC 3, Odin Sphere, and God of War II were the only games I've checked out, but all looked great. Much better than they do on the PS2. Obviously upscaling isn't going to give you great graphics, but running 1080p there's a very noticeable difference. Instead of still using my PS2 as I had planned I'm now actually using the backwards compatibility in the PS3...

Its kind of strange because all the other screenshot comparisons are so dramatic. Only reason I can think of is because IGN didn't actually do 1080p comparisons with proper screenshots of similar quality to compare to.

WilliamRLBaker6946d ago (Edited 6946d ago )

they seem all blurry and not really better, and i've yet to find an option to upscale the games to 720p... one should never take 480i/p content and upscale it to 1080i/p it all ways looks like crap that way.

PhinneousD6946d ago (Edited 6946d ago )

ewww... it just makes things not as crisp so you can't see the pixilated texures as well. you can't fool us sony! we are on to you!!!! >:-(
to be honest, i like the un"scaled" version better... it has richer color and looks more detailed.

IGN have posted low res images. Look at my test:

ErcsYou6946d ago (Edited 6946d ago )

those screen shots showed a huge difference. when i tried the upscaler myself it was very easy to tell that it made games look better

Bathyj6946d ago

The upscale pix look way sharper. In SotC it made a HUUUUUUUUGE difference with the shimmering interlacing effect as well.

I admit some of these screens have a haze or washed out look to them but in game it just makes it look more natural and less cartoony. Screenshots are NO way to do a proper comparison and if you're knocking the PS3 based on these screens slap yourself in the face with a burnt fish for me.

Alot depends on the source as well. Of course PS1 games aren't going to look that good, and maybe even worse since the new rez might showcase the shortcomings of the graphics. You can polish a turn forever, its still a turd, but a fresher one might come up a bit shinier. Also maybe these test should be done with just upscaling on and not blurring (which can be turned off by the way). I cant believe people are complaining about blurring. Do you even know what AA is?

TheMART6946d ago

Oops, now look at the pictures again... first time you think: indeed PS3 upscaling looks better... THen you look again and see

The PS3 image is squeezed vertically, so the right measurements are gone. Now zoom in on the ceiling. The detail has gone.

Thus PS3 upscaling = getting the edges to smooth indeed, but at the same time blur the whole screen + squeezing the screen vertically...

Doesn't look better at all!!!

Sashy6946d ago

The Mart, I actually set my HDtv on widescreen so ... please dont complain so mutch before you know whats going on.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle34d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga42d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit42d ago (Edited 42d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199242d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga42d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac42d ago (Edited 42d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman41d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box42d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion41d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7242d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7542d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit42d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14942d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7742d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
