Bungie in a difficult position

The Halo Beta has taken Xbox Live by storm as we all knew it would. But Free Radical's Dave Doak believes there's now an enormous amount of pressure on Bungie to deliver the goods with Halo 3.

CVG recently caught up with Dave Doak during a Haze presentation at the Ubidays event in Paris. Doak was mainly there to show off his multiplatform FPS Haze but he gives a great interview and was only too happy to comment on the competition.

Doak's played the beta, and admits he's a bit rubbish at it, but sees it putting Bungie in a difficult position as far as the fans' expectations go. "From looking at forums and the feedback they're in a difficult position with the Beta. Well, they're in a great position because it's going to sell. But they're in a difficult position because they're now doing the third one. Some people liked the first one and some people liked the second one. Both sets of people now want the third one to be what they want."

When asked if he sees the Xbox 360 version of Haze getting lost into noise surrounding Halo 3, Doak replied, "Clearly on 360 you're going up against the juggernought that is Halo. It's wise to not be standing in the middle of the road when it comes towards you because there's nothing bigger on Xbox. In many ways Halo 3 has already won that battle before it's even really started."

Dave Doak believes alot of things.

SuperSaiyan46940d ago

I didnt expect a developer of another game to say such good things like that. He is very right indeed.

I was reading and thought 'Ah any moment he is gonna knock the visuals and say HAZE is far better' etc but he didnt.

I have to give kudos to this guy, very well said.

But then I am sure since HAZE will be coming to the 360 eventually he does not want to upset the huge Xbox 360 fanbase with negative comments of Xboxs' top game HALO 3.

Skizelli6939d ago

If only more people had respect for one another. Then we wouldn't be having these petty fanboy wars.

CyberSentinel6940d ago

There's room in my wallet for both games. Just make Haze the best it can be, and I will pre-order it.

mboojigga6940d ago

It is simple really. This respective developer is fully aware that this is a Beta unlike a lot of new sites and everyday people who don't get that this is a Beta. Not suprising by his comments at all. What are you going to say to somthing about a Beta other then how it is shaping up. He is working on a FPS so he is obviously a fan of the genre.

Saint Sony6940d ago

He is totally right, Halo 3 has to offer the goodies people are waiting for. I am personally happy with the multiplayer and if campaign is any better, good. Halo3 is next gen game, but not quite there yet if we talk about gfx. Gameplay on the other hand (based on beta) is right there where next gen enjoyment should be. We will see if they can offer us more than "just" great game play. Gameplay is the most important thing to me, but I hope they have not forgot the next gen looks either.

That's Microsoft's gaming division for you...kill off developers making new ip while trying to capitalize off some long lost glory that has no hope of ever being what it once was thanks to recent decision making favoring unrealistic profit goals and greed. What a joke.

Reaper22_205d ago

So much bitterness. Why be upset over something like this. Just don't buy it and stick with what you prefer.

Tacoboto204d ago

Complaining about Microsoft is the only thing people comment here for anymore.

This website is practically dead without it

Mmmkay204d ago

I remember when you guys constantly complained about Sony remaking and remastering games. Guess it is cool now. As usual.

thesoftware730204d ago

Give it rest medman..., take a deep breath and try to not sound so invested in something no one is forcing you to read, buy, or play.

"Console war"is over, Sony won, be happy.

medman199d ago (Edited 199d ago )

@thesoftware730
I'm invested in people losing their jobs and their livelihoods while Microsoft execs tout record profits for their gaming division. Not sure why you wouldn't be invested. Could be you one day. Good luck.

So what’s their solution to having multiplayer? Wait until Halo 7?
That was one of the most memorable parts of Halo..

monkey602205d ago

I'm not sure spending the heavy investment in time to recreate the multiplayer here is the answer either though.
Remaking the campaigns is a great idea to bring the new players up to speed. But if the multiplayer is included in each it'll just fracture the player base of each release.
I think it might be better to turn these campaigns out quicker and have 1 multiplayer game to keep everyone in one place

Travesty205d ago

Maybe having an Halo Online and just release the Combat Evolve maps. And when Halo 2 releases have those maps release. I don’t know but I would like to play a newer version of Halo multiplayer. I know times have changed, and Fortnite is all younger kids really play. But back then it was Halo and you connecting 6 Xbox’s together lol.

jjb1981205d ago

I agree. I think that'll segment the playerbase and once 7 comes out, players might realize it sucks and go back to the older games. Especially if 7 is live-servixe, they'll be shooting themselves in the foot on the one good leg they have to stand on.

crazyCoconuts204d ago

Kinda surprised they didn't just port MCC.
Maybe more $ to by made with separate remasters

Inverno205d ago

Wouldn't have that problem if it were MCC being released. Gotta wait for 7 to be disappointed with MP all over again cause if they half baked Infinite what makes people think they won't half bake the next game? MP works in past HALO games not cause of nostalgia but because it's MP that isn't concerned with the endless service approach.

JEECE204d ago

There is so much cognitive dissonance over Infinite. People say they didn't like it because it was a live service. Yet if you look at what the criticisms of it were at the time it came out and when the playerbase started falling off, the primary issue people had was a lack of updates. In other words, it wasn't enough of a live service.

Which is really an encapsulation of the problem with multiplayer today. So many people think that they want to go back to the "good old days" of mid-2000s multiplayer (The first few Halos, Socom, the first few Battlefields, CS 1.6, etc), but in reality if a multiplayer game like that came out today, people would whine about the lack of content within a month of launch and go back to a live service with a grindy progression system.

isarai205d ago

Why not just port the MCC? 🤔 That was the easiest layup ever and you completely missed it

franwex204d ago

30% profit margins! People will pay $70+ for remakes!

Software_Lover204d ago

I thought the same thing, then I realized that they wouldn't include the remakes in that edition. We may get a different version of Halo MCC in the future with all of the remakes included. I just want them to include Halo 5 at some point for PC.

TheColbertinator204d ago

Can they remake Reach too with the multiplayer?

Knightofelemia204d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will port Reach over to Playstation I quite enjoyed that game. I played Halo 3 and it was not bad I have Halo 2 on the OG Xbox I just need some cables to hook up to my tv to play it.

Infinite is a dumpster fire and as much as I like ODST, in no universe it ranks above Halo 2. This list is trash.

Kaii866d ago

Just exclude Infinite>5>4

ChasterMies866d ago

Best to worst: Halo 3, Halo 2, Halo Reach, Halo CE, Halo 4, Halo ODST, Halo Infinite, Halo 5.
