Why the Xbox Needs Blu-Ray

NextGN writes: "The Xbox 360 has more than it's fair share of great games, still - could you imagine just how much better Fable, Gears of War, and Halo could be if the game developers had more space to use? It would be smart for Microsoft to provide their developers with latest and greatest physical media storage, and at the moment that is Blu-Ray. Whether or not 8 gigabyte limit is holding developers back from pushing games to the next level, extending the limit would do nothing but give the generation a nudge in the right direction."

GWAVE6036d ago (Edited 6036d ago )

It's not just Blu-Ray. The lack of a standard HDD holds back development a lot, too. That's why multiplatform games are looking very crummy compared to games developed just for the PS3, yet these same multiplatform games look just as good (and often better) than any 360 exclusive. Resident Evil 5, Fallout 3, and Modern Warfare 2 all spring to mind.

rodeoo6036d ago

blueray on the 360 is pointless for 2 main reasons.
1. wouldn't be used for game.
2. The add on would probably be priced around the same as a cheap standalone blueray

Tony P6036d ago

It's stupid to throw out blu-ray now. You'd only be able to watch movies. No way does MS include it standard and start forcing devs to support it at this point. It seems like an unnecessary set of costs.

Standard hdd? I can't argue with that. It's rather stupid that they haven't yet when you consider how much they're pushing digital download.

Double Toasted6036d ago

at least the major(important) ones mention the need for Blu-ray. If this was the case then MS would have to do something and that something would be to release a new console with a Blu-ray drive. Its as simple as that...

Blaze9296036d ago (Edited 6036d ago )

It won't/can't be used for games so whats the point? And we seen how 360 consumers like HD movies with the optional HD DVD player - they don't. Thats why you dont see 360 consumers asking/begging for blu-ray; they don't care.

Zune Marketplace 1080p streams just nullifies the need even more.

pleaaaaaaaase

alot of this gen. games comes with multiple disks on the xbox

next gen would have bigger games
more hi-rez graphics
bigger cites in sand box games
more more more that’s what gaming need
I mean short campaigns and low rez textures wont be acceptable next net
In this gen maybe because it’s the transformation gen
It’s the first HD gen in console gaming

its okay games can come out on dvd-9 next gen
but each game well at least have 2 or 3 disks

big games my have 10 disks

lol are you kidding me ??
ppl already make jokes about switching disks in the xbox
you wont them to make more jokes next gen ??

JokesOnYou6036d ago

Just like the majority of the public are like 'meh to Bluray, it beat HD DVD because it had more studio's behind it yet unlike DVD its still been very slow to become the dominant format even with no other HD competition.

It adds cost but its done nothing major for game devs, ps3 games have the same avg content and game length. 360 games like Gears and ME dont take nearly that long and look just as good as ps3 games.

Dev's make games better or worst based on budget, and talent, resources etc, bluray is more space, thats it, same reason why Insomniac admits their own fans think RFOM2 was a failure...because it wasnt that good, bluray or DVD9, you get what you put into a game, Insomniacs a good dev, they just didnt deliver that time, thats all....either way sony can keep bluray, I own a ps3, and 360's doing just fine without it.

Make the next xbox play blu-ray movies and games.
To those people who are adamant on saying that they do not need blu-ray because they do not mind switching discs are hypocrites. Who wouldn't say no to convenience.

Blu-ray add-on on the current xbox is arguably a waste of money since the 360 won't play blu-ray games anyway. 360 users could just get another standalone blu-ray player, or a PS3.

Blaze9296036d ago

Hmm I'm sorry...did i not state "360" clear enough? I don't think I ever mentioned anything about next-gen....or you can't read non-fanboy language?

Sitdown6036d ago

"To those people who are adamant on saying that they do not need blu-ray because they do not mind switching discs are hypocrites. Who wouldn't say no to convenience"

So people are hypocrites because they feel they are capable of switching a disc? Stop trying to make a big deal about nothing....some people switch games at least 10 times a day to play something different....so it would not be all that different to switch a disc for the same game. Are people also hypocrites for buying cds when you can download from itunes? Am I a hypocrite if I choose to turn my tv on from the unit and not by the remote? But even before that.....its not up to you to define what is convenient for anybody else........what if after using my 360 I remove the disc at the end of the night...so come the next day, I just pop the second disc in..is that necessarily inconvenient? I own all three consoles....and not once have I felt slighted by the 360 because of having to change a disc.....except for the fact that changing a disc on the 360 is not as cool as it is on the ps3.

cereal_killa6036d ago

Kojima and Rockstar North says hello....

"If this was the case then MS would have to do something and that something would be to release a new console with a Blu-ray drive. Its as simple as that..."

I guess you must work for M$ since you know exactly what there plans are for the next Xbox do you honestly think they can survive another generation with DVD.

HolyOrangeCows6036d ago (Edited 6036d ago )

The lack of standard HDD is holding back the 360.
And screwing over people with initial vs final cost ($100 for 60GB HDD? Freaking ridiculous!).

As for blu-ray, MS will never buy into it, as they would be helping Sony establish another standard form of hard media. Sony gets royalties on every Blu-ray disc. And the Sony PS3 is a threat to MS's Xbox (Which you can tell whenever they are spreading fud as they always do in interviews (Since they have nothing positive to say about their own products)).

poopface16036d ago

it would never have 360 games on blu ray disks.

4Sh0w6036d ago (Edited 6036d ago )

Use multiple discs, I mean if a dev really feels he needs more space then just use 2 discs, the only type of game that this becomes and issue for are massive open world go anywhere type of games, and there are workarounds, like installs for those with a hdd, the minority with no hdd(do they really exist?) will just have to switch discs more often, also these type of games make up probably less than 3% percent of gaming titles currently available on either platform.

The space arguement doesnt hold much water when Turn10 is the latest dev to just use a 2nd disc without blinking, the game is getting fantastic scores and I doubt gamers care at all.

Lykon6035d ago

really, M$ just need to invest in making the 720 and learn from the massive hardware mistakes. Build a reliable console that delivers for once. AS for the many great great games, the author lists 3, the same 3 that get mentioned every time. put blu ray on the 720 built in and make a console that doesn't break if a door slams two blocks away. rolls eyes

PeterPanParadox6036d ago

Not that I am not happy with the current standard of Xbox games I just think that giving the developers more disc space to play with would certainly inspire developers.

Baliw6036d ago

then you can expect a brand new format for the next xbox.

They can even bring games on memory sticks...

Bumpmapping6036d ago

The Xbox needs alot of things.

Zool 086036d ago

Yeah, starting with a cell processor.

neonlight456036d ago

yo we can keep the cell, what they need to do is to try to come up with their own thing

jhoang6036d ago

they should start with sometinh simpler like a working fan or cooler hardware.

Hank_Hill6036d ago

they didn't need it then, they dont need it now

Evil Industry6036d ago

that´s denial. i love my xbox but after seeing what has been coming out for the ps3 and all those comments about not being able to do that on the xbox because of space limitations has really got me thinking. i want to see this fixed for the next console.

PeterPanParadox6036d ago

limitations are mostly never good.

sikbeta6036d ago

No Swap and No game compression helping Devs to make better games and by that don't f*ck the ports for the PS3

Tony P6036d ago (Edited 6036d ago )

I don't think screwy ports have anything to do with blu-ray, but everything to do with the cell. Or rather the lack of expertise in programming for it.

sikbeta6036d ago

Compressed games f*ck up all the game from videos to sound and even the in-game world, example: Alan Wake no longer Open-World, I know is not multiplat, that's why I use it as an example XD

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle5d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga13d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199212d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga12d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman12d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box13d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion12d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7213d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7513d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit12d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14913d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7713d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
