Are consoles a handicap for graphics development?

Nvidia: First real DirectX 11 games in 6-12 months, even more console ports expected.

Worse and not impossible is the assumption of Nvidia's Tony Tamassi and Ashu Rege that upcoming titles will initially still be based on DirectX 9 since games are primarily developed for consoles. . .

I think it's unquestionably true. It's just less risky to produce a game on lesser tech and maybe make piles of cash than to use the latest and (pessimistically) maybe break even.

I think it's also pretty cool in most cases. The PC version of these games will usually run and/or look better anyway. Also, you eventually get more mileage out of of your purchase since you aren't "upgrading every few months" to take advantage of the latest greatest.

Anyhow, I always prefer a console over the PC mainly because I can relax, plug and play. No need to worry about upgrades, spec requirements or sitting on a small chair in front of a damn 21" monitor.

To be honest, I don't even consider a PC as a gaming alternative anyways and besides, I don't see anybody with a PS3 complaining about having outdated graphics because according to Killzone 2 and uncharted 2, it's quite clear that its pushing console boundaries... even enough to intimidate PC gamers, thus always using Crysis as a last resort to comparing with PS3 exclusives, Lol!.

Nihilism6049d ago

of course they are, but i only half care, they are giving the pc hardware a chance to catch up, in about 2 years time, there will be gpu's that can handle any game, even the best current games, at 1080p with 16qaa ( even crysis), and anyone who thinks that's a bad thing is insane, sure it would be all well and good to have the 'potential' to have better graphics in games, but if the games had progressed as far as pc hardware has in the last few years....we'd still have the setting turned down, and maxing out a game is a good feeling indeed.

But you have to remember that a console is nothing more than a cheap supped-up pc. It's convenience. Just plug the game in and play, not worrying about what kind of graphics card, processor or ram you have.

Start of each new gen of consoles life's PC's tend to gain - the standard is quite high, and with the res/effects bonuses available in PC versions, pushes even top end PC's fairly hard. As the consoles age, though, the opposite happens - PC's are more and more capable but consoles, being the bigger market, are kept as the baseline target and PC games - but for just some minor polish - stagnate versus their newer potential.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing16d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit16d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing16d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
