Why Do PC Gamers Hate Modern Warfare 2's New Matchmaking System?

1UP writes:

"Unlike previous Call of Duty games on PC -- and most other first-person shooters, not to mention most other genres, too -- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be shipping without the usual multiplayer server browser, instead making use of a new matchmaking service called IWNet. A petition asking Infinity Ward to reconsider its decision to allow traditional dedicated servers has now been signed by nearly 130,000 individuals. Amazon.co.uk's reviews section for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 is littered with more than 125 1-star reviews, most all of which are complaining about IWNet and the perceived restraints it brings with it. It's clear that we're not dealing with a few fanboys who are crying foul, even if it is nothing more than the vocal minority."

Seriously, how hard would it be to have the match making system AND dedicated servers?

Valve actually god matchmaking done right for L4D's lobby system. People host dedicated server, and when you make a lobby for your friends, you're automatically assigned to a dedicated server based on ping and location. If there's no dedicated servers available, or you chose to, you can run a P2P server off your machine. COD MW2 could easily use this kind of system. The lobby system could help give use to all the empty servers, while the people that want to pay for the dedicated servers can still use them the same way they would in previous COD games.

I for one don't like sitting in a lobby after every match, or waiting for the match to get started. I like continual play. IW has lost touch with their entire original fanbase.

Are people really asking this question?

"Most games use a dedicated server application. This program collects data from players and distributes it to other players. This is more efficient and effective than a peer-to-peer arrangement, but it requires a separate computer to host the server application. The additional computer is a server.

Network bandwidth, in particularly upstream bandwidth is often one of the major limitations in hosting game servers. Home broadband Internet connections rarely provide the necessary upstream bandwidth to host dedicated game servers with more than 4-10 clients.

In the past, this is how the majority of game servers were hosted. This was the only option. The player would buy the game, and most households only had one computer, so the player would use this one machine host his or her server and play the game on, often simultaneously. The stress on the computer was enormous, and game performance was proportionately poor. Even if the bandwidth on the newest broadband Internet services could keep up with the load, the computer itself was still behind in computing the data needed. Process data for 3D graphics, game physics, sorting and distributing network data to the other players on one computer, places considerable demands on servers.

A professional server is a computer to read data and transmit vast amounts of data as fast as players need it. A handful of game hosting pioneers realized the need for such systems. They purchased rack mounted server machines and colocated them within datacenters to host their games. They paid between $200 and $700 a month for this luxury, and the teams that could foot such bills were few and far between, but these setups significantly improved the gameplay. Within a few years online multiplayer gaming became a huge success. Prices have lowered dramatically and subscribers increased 1000 fold."

Bear in mind it only cost me $10/month for my teams Cod4 match server.

Tehdaza6060d ago

My TF2 community is all over North America. We had planned on buying a MW2 server to see if we could expand our community. Now this is impossible...

And we really won't even be able to play together. P2P with 2000 miles between some of us? No thank you.

solar6060d ago

crap on a community for the sake of the green back. sad, sad day. :(

caladbolg7776060d ago (Edited 6060d ago )

What you will see here is a majority of the competitive PC teams shunning MW2 entirely and instead opting to continue to play MW1 (or ultimately Bad Company 2).

From a competitive gaming perspective, the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 is DEAD-IN-THE-WATER.

Nikuma6060d ago

If you have to ask why PC gamers are hating MW2, then you know nothing about PC gaming. The end.

herbaldoctor76059d ago

inifinity ward just made a huge mistake. they are going to ruin what makes pc version the best 50 player matches. now im getting it on 360 or ps3 not sure which. my monster pc intel i7 2x nvidia 285 12 gigs ddr3 1 tb hdd. sad to say cod mw2 will not be installed if they dont add servers.. pc gamimg is going to the garbage.

TotalPS3Fanboy6059d ago

"First they lag-fest the console version. Now, they want to lag-fest the PC version too. It's not like we are asking them to host the dedicated servers. No. We will be hosting our own dedicated servers. We just need that feature," said the PC gamers.

"Money," said Activision.

why would I want IWNet when I have a console? I buy the pc version of a game for a reason, and IW need to acknowledge that.

mistajeff6060d ago

$60 PC CoD6 = $10 mouse and keyboard support.

Azurite6059d ago

CoDMW2, not CoD6(there isn't even a CoD5).

I Call 9MM6060d ago (Edited 6060d ago )

The no matching is just an attempt at curving pirating. It's really obvious. They are trying to hide that fact, but that is the sad truth of the matter.

mistajeff6060d ago

I agree. And are pirates really the ones paying the biggest price here?

toxikon6060d ago

i honestly think its more about selling DLC.

DMasta7186060d ago

It is about DLC.

Game still did numbers on PC despite piracy.

If anything, this will even make piracy even more of a problem on the PC for the simple fact they are screwing over PC players.

CrippleH6060d ago

It's a stupid one. You can have the game on steam and still have dedicated servers. The no dedicated server and mod is just them forcing PC users to pay for their DLC.

mistajeff6060d ago

I have absolutely no problem with the matchmaking, as long as other options are available.

This sucks. This whole situation makes me want to retreat into CSS.

ambientFLIER6060d ago (Edited 6060d ago )

Because they are cry babies and whine and whine if they don't get everything their way 100%. They threaten to pirate, and when they do get their way, they pirate anyway.

WAAH WAAH CALL A WAAHMBULANCE

Tehdaza6060d ago

Or we don't just bend over and take abuse the way console gamers do so regularly.

solar6060d ago

you have showed up in every thread about this issue to troll, please leave and stop being ignorant.

HDgamer6060d ago

Dedicated servers over p2p.

Tehdaza6060d ago

That statement contradicts itself.

Major_Tom6060d ago

Oh no, freedom of choice, such a bad thing, grumble grumble..

unknownhero11236059d ago

in the faces of 100,000+ pc users, let's see who calls an ambulance then. they're getting shafted this time around, they have a very good reason to complain.

jessupj6059d ago

"Or we don't just bend over and take abuse the way console gamers do so regularly. "

I believe you ment to say 360 only owners :P jk jk

TotalPS3Fanboy6059d ago (Edited 6059d ago )

Tehdaza: "Or we don't just bend over and take abuse the way console gamers do so regularly."

jessupj: "I believe you ment to say 360 only owners :P jk jk"

But when I looked into Jessupj's eyes, I instantly knew that he was not kidding. It was the most serious look I have ever seen. Til this day, I still remember that look.

MW3 shouldn’t leave Modern Warfare 2’s overlooked playlist behind

Modern Warfare 3 is set to be one of the biggest COD games yet features-wise, but it shouldn't leave out one of the best MW2 game modes in the rear view mirror.

Modern Warfare 2 Adds Pay-to-Win Items With Thermal Scope and Merlin the Dog, Here's How They Work

Some alleged Modern Warfare 2 pay-to-win elements were recently added, see what they are here and how they work.

PunksOnN4G1019d ago

The DOG is legit Broken if ur hiding in a room or grass he turns his head even if ur behind a closed door he turns his head and barks letting them know where u at thats PAY TO WIN!!!!!

LucasRuinedChildhood1019d ago

I hope all the assholes who buy these get stuck in lobbies with each other. I skipped new COD games for a long time and a short time with MW2 convinced me to go back to on a hiatus.

With the skill-based matchmaking (engagement-based would be more accurate), I imagine this will make the game even more miserable for most players when the matchmaking has decided it's time for a tough lobby.

I played the OG MW2 recently on the Series X and it's disheartening how much more fun it is. I don't even care about the balance issues anymore. lol

PunksOnN4G1019d ago

My friends dont play with me anymore i am former pro player and i even streamed on MLG for RX gaming the team i played for... My KD is always high 5-6kd my friends who i went to school with are not good wht so ever so with SBMM kicking in its always putting us in TOP TIER lobbys and they cant hang now they dont even tell me when they getting on LOL

ManMarmalade1018d ago

I recently started playing OG MW2 again and I'm having a blast. Feels like I'm in high school again.

fr0sty1018d ago (Edited 1018d ago )

Welcome to COD under MS. It's all downhill from here, they're going to be looking to make that $68B back as fast as possible, at any expense to the player.

StarkR3ality1018d ago

The deal hasn't even closed yet you pleb. CoD has been doing stuff like this since the loot boxes in WWII.

Nice try though pal.

TheColbertinator1017d ago

Activision has never needed Microsoft or anybody for that matter to act like greedy bastards

PunksOnN4G1018d ago

why did my 2nd comment about SBMM get downvited LOL?? Do we have people who Enjoy trash SBMM tbh make sense it caters to LOW KD players and u will never get better playing with the same trahs everyday LOL

andy851019d ago

Probably gonna see more of this BS once the deal is fully done..Gotta recoup that 70B.

Jin_Sakai1019d ago (Edited 1019d ago )

Look at Minecraft. The game hasn’t went anywhere since Microsoft bought them. No 4K, no 120fps, no graphics pack, and no Ray Tracing. Just some new biomes, mobs, and more skins as usual.

Same could be said about Rare. Who knows what will happen to Activision once they’re under Microsoft’s roof. We can all take a good guess though.

PunksOnN4G1019d ago

TBH they did update it by accident then they pulled the update down on xsx and xss i remeber the XSX version having ray tracing but the S did not. Then after people seen that it was updated it was removed that same day

peppeaccardo1019d ago

No way !!! Nobody wouild think they would monetize on items that weak asses will use to get advantage during multiplayer action !!! I would never think they would do that ... I mean is a free to play game after all ! /S
Wait once M$ will put their greasy hands all over Activizion and you will see what awaits the "lucky" ones who will play this slot machine of a game. Sooooo Lame !

jznrpg1019d ago

They way it works is you give them money and more money and more money.

anast1018d ago

It's a true phenomenon that people haven't figured this out yet.
