A Reformed Uncharted 2 Skeptic

In this lengthy post on his blog 1up writer Dan Sims explains how Uncharted 2 won him over. Perhaps this resonates with those who have yet to give Nathan Drake or the PS3 a chance?

GWAVE6065d ago

Uncharted 2 makes it impossible to ignore the PS3. Every gamer without a PS3 should be considering one. There are far too many games on the PS3 (just counting this year alone) that cannot be missed.

Aaron Greenterd6064d ago

Games don't need to "win" anyone over, they just need to be fun.

Whenever you hear or read that a ps3 game "won someone over", that means they've been one of my loyal customers, draining their wallets into scratched disks, faulty hardware, snap-on overpriced accessories, and full price $60 expansion packs.

This is basically battered wife syndrome. The poor, battered wife (my customer) gets abused until something comes along and wakes them up, gives them new meaning and new purpose.

The way out (playstation 3) has been there all along, they just needed a reason (uncharted 2) to finally move on from that dysfunctional, abusive relationship.

Welcome to the future of gaming. Welcome to the playstation 3.

Are there any major spoilers in this blog? I haven't had the time to finish U2 yet, but I'd like to read this.

Thanks!

Foliage6064d ago

To answer my own question, no major spoilers.

I didn't read the comments though, since I expect there would be spoilers in there.

ThanatosDMC6064d ago (Edited 6064d ago )

Well, see he was biased before... he didnt even like Drakes Fortune??

"I guess one reason I expected this is because I love 3D adventuring and puzzle-solving so much. I eat it right up wherever it's offered to me. Sitting down and mulling over a seemingly impassable obstacle or an unreachable place is probably my second favorite thing to do in video games next to exploring huge environments. It offers a sense of accomplishment that is uniquely cerebral compared to just killing things."

Weird that he complained about the shootout compared to the puzzle solving of the first then didnt complain about it on the second. I bet it's because he, like many others, felt part of the adventure while playing U2... i mean, those chase shootouts felt like a movie but the player was in control the whole time. Oh well...

Also, i never understood why reviewers complained about the stealth gameplay of the first level. I went through it without getting caught once on my first play through. Maybe it's because i played Tenchu, Assassin's, MGS, Syphon Filter... but c'mon it's common sense to go behind them instead of going in front of their field of view... idiots.

B4G. That's the new name of N4G, seeing that now every submission it's a stupid blog...

nycnomad836065d ago

To 2- Fair enough, but this blog is written by a reputable games journalist from a relatively reputable site (I say relatively after the mass firings of last year) so yes, its an opinionated unmoderated exclamation on his part, but unlike most bloggers this guy has the foundation of professional game writing experience to base his opinion on and know a little bit more than the average Joe as to what the hell he's talking about.

Only people to deny the greatness of U2 are the delusional and demented xbots on this site. Sorry bots for having to miss out on a masterpiece you'll never get to experience on your POS system known as the 360.

DK_Kithuni_716065d ago

Xbots than now crap in real Microsoft certified Xbox 360 Men's Sleep Pant's while they have nightmares of all the great PS3 exclusives they cannot play.

I wonder if Aaron Greenberg already has the Microsoft certified Xbox 360 diaper? He is sure as hell is going to need it. Only a matter of time before the PS3 crushes the Xbox 360.

"Most people who are blown away by a game are simply blown away by it. When you put a game under a microscope and it continues to amaze though, that's the mark of true craftsmanship. That's real game design."

- Daniel Sims

Elwenil6064d ago (Edited 6064d ago )

So, this guy didn't like Drakes Fortune because he likes puzzles and disliked the combat, but likes Among Thieves which has fewer puzzles and loads more combat? As one Playstation forum poster put it, "You basically kill the equivalent of the population of Costa Rica." I sort of have to agree with that. There may have been just as many battles in the first game, but there were tons more enemies in the second. Not that I am complaining, I love the game and I'm still playing it.

This guy just seems a bit confused about his "look" at Uncharted 2. His comments about Nepal's climbing obstacles and "That's how 3D environmental adventure game design is done" is a bit strange to me. Even for me, a lover of the game, I feel that the lack of multiple paths takes a lot of the "adventure" out of it. Whenever there was climbing to do, there was generally only one way to get where you were going and after the first few chapters, it became painfully obvious where to go. Oh, and as much as I liked the game, I really think the whole "boost me up and I'll kick down this fire escape ladder or random ladder in the middle of nowhere" thing was way overdone and got more than a little ridiculous by the last few chapters. It's that's how 3D adventure level design is done, I guess I'd better hope for more fire escapes and an AI buddy to kick them down for me.

Triella6064d ago (Edited 6064d ago )

But you're absolutely right the ladder thing was overdone but I suspect ND to have used these moments and the ones where you pass throught a tight spot for loading data purpose.

DARK WITNESS6064d ago (Edited 6064d ago )

I thought they were good points..

and at the other guy, whats wrong with loving a game and nit-picking at any short comings you think the game had.

it's done all the time with 360 exclusives, it's done all the time with multiplats.... why should ps3 exclusives be an exception ?

when I started playing uncharted to I spent a lot of time trying to find fault with it, but as the game progressed I just got more and more caught up with the who experience.

after MGS4, uncharted 2 is the second game to really and truly impress me to the point and I want to play it over and over again.

There is always room for improvement and you wont find it by not being able to give an honest opinion on what you thought was good and what could be done better and what sucked...

Uncharted 2 Is the Most Important PlayStation Exclusive of All Time

In a list of games that defined the PlayStation 3, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves would certainly be one of the top contenders. The blockbuster sequel to 2007’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune not only received critical acclaim and became a massive hit for Sony’s third console when it was released 15 years ago on October 13th, 2009, but it also cemented Naughty Dog’s future as a developer of cinematic, story-driven action-adventure games as opposed to its history of colorful platformers like Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter from previous PlayStation generations. To this day, Uncharted 2 stands as one of the PS3’s best exclusives and one of the most important PlayStation games of all time.

gold_drake569d ago

it was pretty good. especially the multiplayer

KyRo569d ago

I loved this era on multiplayer games from Sony. People used to call the modes tacked on multiplayer but they were enjoyable. I loved Factions even more. I'm Still gutted that the second one isn't coming out.

-Foxtrot569d ago

Yeah, that one game where it not only has an amazing single player but the multiplayer was also just as good.

A fresh a breath air with it's more "skill focused, less is more" multiplayer in a time during COD fever where every other game with online was trying to be like it.

Shame NaughtyDog eventually did do COD like things with Uncharted 3 and 4, they ruined what made the original so good. It become an over the top arcade fest in the end.

Inverno569d ago

Ironic cause the MP was basically Halo, and Bungie helped on the technical side of things too. MP was more simple back then, I've said this before but I played U2 MP religiously. I sucked at it like you have no idea, but mah gawd did I have so much fun. Can't find an MP game that hooked me like U2s these days. Then Factions came along and while it had its problem I found new religion with it. Agh damn it why did they cancel Factions 2 bruhh.

gold_drake569d ago

i had so much fun too, played almost every night with mates or cousins baha

Relientk77569d ago

It is for sure my favorite game in the series. It's such a blast to play. The train levels still hold up and are fun as hell as well as the entire game.

RaidenBlack569d ago (Edited 569d ago )

Still remember the first gameplay video ... shooting the chasing truck and then the beautiful visuals & details whilst traversing the dilapidated Nepal streets ... perfection
Too bad Sony never ported the trilogy to PC ...

RaiderNation569d ago

I would argue it's God of War.

darthv72569d ago

I'll say, the PS3 really did sequels better than people give it credit for. Resistance 2, Uncharted 2, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Infamous 2... all were better than their initial offerings and still hold up to this day.
