Overhyped? Other developers should take notes.

This is how you make a sequel. Looking forward to see if Infinity Ward can pull it off aswell.

It kind of sounds like he sucks at the game, or is the author a she? Whatever, sounds like he/she sucks.

The author states that since he is making the wrong jumps that the game is somewhat broken due to it not telling you enough information in which way to jump...

But if you noticed in the first game and the second that the game does indeed help you out by having Drake reach out towards the ledge he can grab onto.

Its really not that difficult, also how can you downplay that the controls of the first level are too sluggish. Lets see how fast he gets up a bloody train hanging from a cliff. ( I would hate for this person to review Demon's Souls.)

Having just finished the single player story less then 20 minutes ago all i can say is no.It deserved every single perfect score it has.
Easily the best game i have ever played.

I played this game alot now.All i have to say its game of the year for me,no doubt.When u start playing it,you cant put the pad down.The graphics are out of this world(never seen graphics like this on 360).

Our special edition copy of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves finally landed yesterday. It’s been a while since I’ve been this excited to play a sequel but such was the quality and fun I had with the original Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, that ever since the sequel was announced I’ve been waiting rather impatiently to play it.

Firstly let me point out this is not my review of the game; this will follow later when I’ve delved somewhat deeper into everything Uncharted 2 has to offer; this is if you like, Uncharted 2: initial impressions.

To put some perspective on this, consider that here we have a game that has already seen a great deal of reviews; each universally praising this as the best game on the PS3 and some as one of the best games ever made. It’s also the sequel to what was arguably the best game on the PS3 (it’s certainly my personal favourite).

As the first level loaded in I was absolutely brimming with excitement and the opening cinematic certainly doesn’t disappoint, but what followed I have to say did leave me feeling a little bit underwhelmed.

As I climbed up the train I was initially impressed by the graphics but within minutes I was becoming frustrated due to the controls. They felt sluggish and unresponsive and this marred my initial time with the game.

Now I’m fully aware that this sluggish behaviour in this section is probably mostly deliberate but I still found it somewhat frustrating. I’ve just kicked off a much anticipated blockbuster sequel, got the adrenaline going through the cinematic introduction and now here I am wading through treacle whilst trying to figure out the right path to go.

This leads me neatly onto another area where Uncharted still feels unimproved. Essentially the path through Uncharted and (at least so far in my playtime) Uncharted 2 is linear. There’s nothing wrong with this in the slightest and certainly I would argue that in many cases being linear actually makes for a better story driven game (ala Half Life).

The problem though is that with a linear game you expect as a player to be presented with a reasonably straight forward path and in Uncharted 2 it too often feels like you are struggling for direction in the opening levels, particularly if you like to explore and find the hidden treasures.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect neon markers showing me the path but in a game where cheap deaths are aplenty I do expect it to be a bit more obvious where I can and can’t go. Uncharted suffered because of this and so far its sequel suffers too, perhaps more so.

The problem is primarily inconsistency; in some areas you can jump a good ten feet across a gap; in others barely two. And in a game where the path isn’t always immediately obvious this can be bloody annoying. Uncharted was similar in this respect but so far its sequel seems worse and this is partially due to the graphical improvement – the grippable ledges and other (some new) clambering means all blend in better to their environment making them hader to identify.

Although I found the first two levels underwhelming, I did perk up significantly when I hit the third! Back in the jungle and back with Sully; suddenly I started enjoying the game much more.

The first two levels primarily centre on the two newer associates of Drake; Harry Flynn and Chloe Frazer. Its early days I admit but so far I’ve not really been that taken by either hence why I was genuinely glad to see Sully re-appear. And in terms of a battle of the babes, at least in my opinion, Elena is far easier on the eye than Chloe!

I’m still looking forward to playing through Uncharted 2 (and a full in depth review will follow soon), but based on what I’ve seen so far I can’t help but feel slightly underwhelmed.

There’s no question the graphics are superb and I’m not doubting the production values of the game or even trying to say its not going to be anything other than excellent.

But key faults with the first title haven’t been addressed and a game can’t be perfect when it has control and direction issues, which is perhaps why I can’t quite grasp where all the 10/10 and perfect reviews are coming from.

Perhaps further play will reveal these answers to me but whilst I know I’m going to have a great and enjoyable ride with Uncharted 2, the opening levels have also shown me that I’m also going to experience some frustration and some disappointment because its issues mean it will never quite be the perfect game I want it to be.

I got it yesterday and couldn't put it down until I had completely effed myself over for sleep.

Now I regret how much fun Uncharted 2 is.

The hype is worth it when it comes to exclusives on playstation, they just do not seem to get a lot of them.

I'm sure Uncharted 2 will be amazing (getting it tomorrow, can't f*cking wait!) but please, when theres so many other games yet to come out dont be so arrogant to think it is GOTY.

Definitely not, this game is fantastic. I liked how the areas weren't always completely obvious where to go. If you're going round a 3000 year old temple which has fallen apart, there isn't going to be a nice path with flowers and butterflies for you to skip down.

I think in the end, most games which get high scores are severely overhyped.

Halo 2 and 3, fun for a bit but in the end, do they really deserve such high scores?

Gears of war 1 Id say lived up to the hype. Good campaign, great multiplayer.

Gears of war 2 however did not.

Other games i can think of which were way overhyped: halflife 2, resistance 1 and 2 and most definitely the 2 fable games.

Uncharted 2? Ive only played 3 chapters but from what i can say, it lives up to the hype. Plenty of replayability and rewards. Really looking forward to getting into the multiplayer as well.

Finished it in one setting, couldn't put the controller down - now when that happens, you KNOW you got gold on your hands! (About to start going in for another round in "crushing" difficulty).

Uncharted 2 is my favourite single player experience i think iv ever played. Which is a pretty big statement since i pretty much buy every game that comes out lol (except sports games. Eugh hate them lol). I actually felt for the characters. I dont think iv properly had that b4 in a video game. The way the story is told is incredible. Sure it can be annoying when diving to cover u stick to it facing the wrong way, but thats about the only problem i had with the controls when playing through it yesterday on Hard. Seriously tho, this guy is either not a gamer, or just trying to get people to view his site. Either way, ignore it.

sucks that he didn't get the warm glow that other people are getting. i'm playing it this weekend during extra life, but i had to get a little in. i'm at train wreck. i have had a couple issues, but it's not the game. it's me. i hope that once i reach the end i get the warm glow instead of the disappointed feeling.

Last night a buddy and I went to play some co-op on UC2 as we logged into the lobby we noticed only 8100 people online playing?? Both of us were like WTF only 8100?? Now I live in Ontario Canada, and that would only make sense maybe if I am hitting Ontario only servers.

Does anyone know if the servers are region specific??

Uncharted 2 is not overhyped. If anything its underhyped. Ask the average joe on the street what the best game out there right now is and they will say Halo: ODST. Ask a gamer without bias and they will say Uncharted 2. I've been a 360 gamer for 3 years, and owned the original xbox for since its launch. There is no game that has ever com out on the 360 that matches the total gaming joy that is Uncharted 2.

Uncharted 2 will be bested (perhaps by an xbox game), its called progress, but dont take away for the moment this little miracle, dont cheapen this moment.

I too disliked the slow beginning climbing sequence (reminiscent of the scene in Modern Warfare 4 after the nuke and your character is crippled, who wants to lumber along, especially right at the start?).

But the rest of the issues were EXTREMELY minimal for me and would certainly not thwart a perfect score. If missing a jump or hand hold every now and again in a game with a cover system, climbing, hand to hand and gun combat all twisted together with a fluid and layered animation system, et cetera is enough to drop a game's score, then no game would EVER get a perfect 10.

Would anybody really prefer invisible walls to keep Drake from falling, or the usual barbed wire fence, pile of burning rubble and so on? And it's not like the checkpoint system isn't pretty forgiving..

I have only played through the first 2 levels, but I can say to me this game feels 40 times smoother than Uncharted: Drakes Fortune. On the first level alone even as Nate is trying to move through the snow you see the visual improvements. The way his body moves through the small space between the train and his reactions from the heat and the huge wound in his stomach. During the 2nd level the smooth controls are back in full effect since he is remembering what lead up to his injuries. The new cash system is an interesting touch (don't forget to press "SQUARE" in the store if you have an Uncharted gamesave). That alone shows that Naughty Dog's creation deserves a higher than 9.3 (GT cough cough) score.

I have played and bought a lot of games this generation from: Gears of War 1&2, COD4:MW, Halo 3, Uncharted, MGS4, Wet, Batman: AA, Infamous, Crackdown, Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider: Underworld, Assassins Creed and this is by far one of the best titles of this generation.

Overhyped no not at all ... I can say a couple of the games I just mentioned are overhyped, but that's a different topic.

UNCHARTED 2 IS THE BEST GAME OF THIS GEN

You PS3 fanboys are going to defend the game to the death and say it is the best even if it isn't. But, I'm sure you guys know that already.

I am through chapter 17 and I love this game. But this game is just a remake of Drakes Fortune with better graphics and not as good of a story(So Far). Fortunately for me I was expecting a remake, so I am in heaven.

For the people who bought into the over-hype of this game, I can see some of them being somewhat underwhelmed by only an improvement in graphics.

i think Uncharted and Uncharted 2 are both overrated, i think people are just so dazzled by the amazing graphics that they get a bit carried away.

i played Uncharted through once and wasnt impressed by anything else other than graphics, which is really not enough for me. i remember playing Tomb Raider on PS1 and being way more amazed, by the level design and puzzles and enemy variety etc... Uncharted was just INCREDIBLY boring in all these aspects.

and now that i played the Uncharted 2 demo quite a bit, i thought it was alright but nothing special. co-op was fun to play through a couple times. and of course it looked fantastic... but still, i cant see myself playing the game any more than that. not worth my 60 euros IMO.

In the beginning of the game Nathan has been injured and he is meant to be moving like this do to his injury. You sir are an idiot or a 360 fanboy....take your pick.

I don't think there was enough hype for this game. Unlike other titles, the majority of the hype came after the reviews rolled in. Also, I thought Naughty Dog made a great improvement on tightening up the controls.

The train that keeps falling apart is really lame, and not very realistic.

It would help if the writer actually played through a bigger portion of the game than the first 2 levels which were clearly designed to give you the skill set you need to get through the rest of the game. By the time he gets to the train he'll be hooked like a big dumb fish.

They might say; Is halo and gta series overhyped? U2 is worth every penny i just finish it and i will star to play again its awesome .

No, the game is not overhyped the game was a masterpiece in all ways.

But I do agree with him on others points in the article. When I'm looking for treasures, it's tough you have no idea which ways are the right way/wrong way. Areas that look accessible are usually not, and treasures are in some of the most unlikely places. In trees, not on the linear path. But this no where takes away from the gameplay experience itself. It may be frustrating now trying to find all the treasures without help, but certainly my first play through of the game lived up to the hype. Every turn was a new twist, and they always put Nathan against ridiculous odds, and in the worst situations all the time, and it made the game exciting the whole play through.

GOTY! hands down.

In other words, I disagree with your article. Naughty Dogs has sucessfully been the first developer to seamlessly intergrate gameplay with a movie. Widespread appeal, Knew when to shut up and let you play, stunning visuals, great voice acting and character design. I smiled through most of the campaign.

Perhaps its not the "greatest game evar!", but it will be a ceminol part of gaming.

It is worth all the hype and praise it gets.

AND all that being said...I can't get Demon's Souls out of my head. Ha, how funny is that?
