Ready At Dawn declares war with new engine

Develop Writes: Developer 'tired of PC engines shoe-horned into consoles'.

Californian developer Ready At Dawn has attacked the current state of console game engines for being too PC-centric and scattered with middleware components.

The God of War: Chains of Olympus developer made criticisms as it announced its own newly-available alternative, the Ready At Dawn Engine.
"We are building something for developers who are tired of the challenges of PC engines shoe-horned into consoles, or trying to stitch together layers upon layers of middleware from multiple vendors," said company president Didier Malenfant, though without naming names.

"Our solution will be a complete game development platform that simply works," he said.

The Ready At Dawn Engine is said to be a wholly console-centric platform, integrated with a suite of third-party tools that require no additional licence. These tools include 3D content editing, audio, user interface and asset management systems.

too bad Sony didn't try to acquire them

Cwalat6105d ago (Edited 6105d ago )

Well said.

I for one really loved Chains of Olympus and i hope they continue to make sidegames for the series.

I know it says "console based engine" but i truly hope we see atleast one more GOW PSP.

Tony P6105d ago

Well, the engine is said to support 360, PS3, and PSP development.

All I can say is 'good luck'. They're facing some talented competition.

Christopher6105d ago

Sony's ICE team already has much of this set for developing specifically for the PS3 and make it available to third party developers.

This is essentially an alternative that will focus on the PSP, PS3, and 360, which may not mean taking full advantage of any of the devices. I'd rather Sony focus on their already well-established engines from their first and second parties than buy a company just to have another option out there or to prevent a company from offering a engine that works for both the PS3 and the 360, but not for the PC.

Alcon Caper6105d ago

After looking at the list of top 10 engines, it doesn't really seem prudent to release a new one, unless it's very intuitive.

I don't see why more people don't take on the crysis engine.

Fishy Fingers6105d ago (Edited 6105d ago )

Is CryEngine 3 even available for licensing yet? Either way, I'm sure many developers will jump on it, but your obviously not going to see or perhaps even hear about those games for some time yet.

Alcon Caper6105d ago

That list says that Aion (NCSoft)uses the CryEngine 3.

http://www.develop-online.n...

...am I youtubing the wrong footage? Seems hard to believe...

Pandamobile6105d ago (Edited 6105d ago )

I'm pretty sure Aion uses the first CryEngine that was made for Far Cry, circa 2004.

That website's got everything wrong.

The only CryEngine 3 game in development is Crysis 2. Crysis and Crysis: Warhead were both on CryEngine 2, and Aion on CryEngine 1.

evrfighter6105d ago

I'm pretty sure Panda's correct. Though through hearsay I thought it was cryengine 2. But after playing Aion beta I'd put my money on the original cryengine.

Alcon Caper6105d ago

Thanks for clearing that up.

Major_Tom6105d ago

If this were true, we would have seen much more impressive looking games from all major Pc developers, but we really haven't. While I enjoyed Dawn of War II a lot, the graphics could have been better.

shadowfox6105d ago

Did they do Dawn of War? I think all they've worked on was Daxter/GOW PSP and Okami Wii.

Tony P6105d ago

Ready at Dawn has no relation to Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War. The just have the word "dawn" in the title...

Major_Tom6105d ago

Sorry, drunk rant. I was on reddit while browing N4G and got mixed up with what was going on.

CobraKai6105d ago

hopefully we get to see some demos sometime soon. It's already in my head that it has to at least look better than Unreal

timestoby6105d ago

very interesting,indeed lol

Ranking the God of War Games

Kratos has been on a rampage, killing Gods in epic battles since 2005. With each release managing to offer high-octane action, I explore each God of War title and rank every adventure from his journey to Olympus to his Norse tales of fatherhood.

I won’t rank Ragnarok just yet, although it is honestly leaving me and my wife blown away…won’t go into details right now, not done as I assume others aren’t either, maybe some of you are, idk haha.

But here’s how I rank them

5. God of War 3
4. God of War Ascension.
3. God of War 1.
2. God of War 2.
1. God of War 2018.

MrNinosan1324d ago

My same ranking exactly, with Ragnarök at #1.

ClayRules20121324d ago

Wow, that’s pretty interesting that someone has the same ranking as me haha. So, did you beat Ragnarok? I assume so with you placing it at #1

Flawlessmic1324d ago

1. God of war 3
2. God of war 2018
3. God of war 2
4. God of war 1

Haven't played the others but about 30 hrs In to ragnarock now so safe to say if it keeps up it will end up being at the top of my list when I'm done.

CrimsonWing691324d ago

I will say the pacing of the original titles and the epic feel to them I feel is way better than the new one’s. Like, I could recognize and appreciate the praise God of War received, but it bores me to tears except for the pivotal moments.

However, that being said I feel Ragnarok is waaaaay better than 2018. I’m only on Ch. 6, but it’s pretty much rocked my face off from the get-go.

I’m really split between this being my GotY or Elden Ring.

robtion1324d ago

I think different games in the series had different strengths but all are great. I liked the original as it was an origin story and the mechanics were fresh. The sequel added smoother gameplay. Three was just so far ahead of it's time graphically it wasn't even funny. Plus great gameplay and bosses and insane gore and nice use of sexy time. The reboot was cool but lost a lot of what I liked about the original trilogy (I don't need my games grown up, just fun). Will wait and see with ragnarok as haven't had time to play it yet.

Should change that headline to: "Old School Titles We Definitely Aren't Going to Get In the New PS Plus Subscription"

roadkillers1542d ago

Honestly, I would be surprised to see a lot of the first party titles let alone the third party. If Sony wants to knock it out of the park, add some of these.

BrainSyphoned1543d ago

Rising Zan because Pushman is the best voice acted boss in the history of gaming.

Konami RPGs---Ring of Red, Azure Dreams and Suikoden.

Thousand Arms, Ogre Battle, Tactics Ogre, Persona 1, both Persona 2 and Persona 3 from Atlus.
Any of those would make me happy. Ogre Battle and Azure Dreams the happiest.

Knushwood Butt1542d ago

Did you see the news about Tactics Ogre Reborn?

Big fan of Tactics Ogre but have it on Vita and Vita TV.

Puty1543d ago

I wonder if the ps1 games will have trophies.

Ron_Danger1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

Most likely not… however Sony did patent (a few years ago) a method of adding trophies to ps2 games based on where on the disc information was being read from (basically t detected when it was loading a new level which would trigger the trophy). I’m assuming they used that tech when they started selling ps2 games for PS4.

jznrpg1543d ago

There were specific trophies too not just level based if I remember correctly .

Ready4nxtgen1543d ago

Parasite eve 1 and 2
Thank you kindly.

CrimsonWing691543d ago

Actually let’s put all Squaresoft PS1 and PS2 games on it. I’d gladly pay for the service for just that.

PlayStation community before:
We don’t buy new consoles to play old games.

PlayStation community now:
Here’s a list of old games we wanna play now that we might be able to on our new consoles

Bathyj1543d ago

Actual PlayStation gamers: Old games are important we know because we have more history and heritage in gaming than anyone but Nintendo, but we're not going to yell and boast about it at a consoles launch to gloss over having no games for a year and lacklustre output for a decade. .

There, fixed it for you.

1543d ago
MrNinosan1543d ago

I haven't seen anyone from the Playstation Community talk and discuss about games we might get with PS+ Premium. Who do you refer to?
Cause bosslevelgamer ain't the Playstation Community if that's what you thought.

jznrpg1543d ago (Edited 1543d ago )

Old games are great from PS but MS doesn’t have the library anywhere close . I only kept a small amount of games from Xbox OG and 360 . Magna Carta , Blue Dragon , Lost Remnant , Morrowind , Witcher 2 and Jade Empire (which i didn’t care for much) I have 100s of PS games I kept over the PS1/2 alone that I love I have a large PS3 library too .
The main reason BC isn’t the biggest deal is if your using it because you aren’t releasing new games and your older library isn’t very good .
It’s a nice bonus feature but not a main feature at all . It doesn’t replace new games and MS still hasn’t released much to this day . Sure it’s coming we have heard that for a decade or more but old games dont fill the void especially with the lackluster first party from MS . There’s a reason why you can buy old MS games cheap because there is little demand for them even before gamepass gave them away for a little while . Go try and buy any PS1 game PS2 game your going to spend a ton of $$

FinalFantasyFanatic1542d ago

This exactly, the Playstation had a killer library of games in the PS1/PS2 days, and there's quite a few gems even in the PS3 days that we can't easily play. Those PS1/PS2 games are enough for me to fork out for the service, although I'd rather buy the games outright digitally. There's also alot of classics I missed out on the first time that I would love to play, especially JRPGs.

S2Killinit1542d ago (Edited 1542d ago )

Actual PlayStation gamers: old games and subscription services are not the selling point of a console.

MrBeatdown1542d ago

Imagine being so dense that you can't grasp the idea that 100+ million PlayStation owners don't all share the same opinion.
