Windows 8 Details Emerge

PCworld writes:

"The version of Windows that succeeds Windows 7 will include a 128-bit architecture, according to an embarrassing leak from Microsoft's research and development team in the US.

Microsoft employee Robert Morgan appeared to detail the software giant's plans for Windows 8, and even Windows 9, on business networking site LinkedIn, where he listed his job as 'senior research and development'. His profile has now been removed from the main LinkedIn site, but is still viewable in Google's search cache.

they gotta recup those zune n 360 losses some wheres but i for one wont b changing from my dual boot ubuntu xp setup anytime soon. (well maybe for chrome if its good) n after vista im pretty sure there are lot more peeps willing to give the alternatives a spin. Considering they are better than windows in a lot of ways and free i find it surprising more havnt made the jump up already.

Chrome is designed to be a netbook OS, not a desktop OS.

win 7 ftw.....and...8...and 9

its a common practice for a company to start working on future products when its upcoming product is close to release. it is dumb to wait years to start working on the new os, besides its not like they'll only support 7 for 2 years,

THEY WANT TO HAVE IT LAST AS LONG AS POSSIBLE TO MILK THE MOST OUT OF IT, TRUST ME THEY IT IS AGAINST THEIR BEST INTERESTS TO HAVE TO RELEASE A NEW OS SO SOON AFTER. so please stop crying foul on MS's mark.

darkmurder6064d ago

Wonder when Windows will go cloud? I'll say 9.

cyberwaffles6064d ago

i don't care if they're already planning Windows 8 and 9 so soon, but my main issue was that rumors were allegedly stating vista being a glorified beta sold to the uniformed public before the release of windows 7. if that's true, then MS pulled a real a-hole move on people.

DJ6063d ago

Chrome OS is a scalable OS that will work on everything from Netbooks to Desktop PCs. It'll initially be available for netbooks since the manufacturers of those products need to shave off every penny they can. And if switching from Windows XP to Chrome OS does the trick (and makes the little buggers run faster and start within seconds), then it'll definitely work.

This is a pretty gigantic leap. 128 bit computing? What kind of limitations does 64 bit really have?

Kushan6064d ago

The same kinds of limitations that a 32bit architecture has when compared to 64bit.
For most consumers, the only limitation THEY'LL ever see is with regards to memory. However, when you have more register space (more "bits"), you can perform certain kinds of calculations MUCH faster. Things like encoding and decoding, cryptography and such benefits from the extra address space and 128bit will make that even faster. However, the real benefit will be for things like scientific number crunching, where millions of high-precision calculations must be made.

Think of it this way, if you have a 128bit number to calculate, on a 32bit machine, it'll take 4 CPU cycles to process it. On a 64bit machine, it'll be twice as fast at doing that exact same calculation and on a 128bit machine, it'll be twice as fast again.

..none atm. Most software is still 32-bit. Considering how long it took to get to 64-bit hardware and software, it will be quite some time before we see 128-bit in the mainstream.

OpenGL6064d ago

64-bit can address up to 16 exabytes of memory, and software would have to be completely rewritten to take advantage of 128-bit registries(not just the operating system), otherwise there will be no performance gains.

As we have seen with Vista and Windows 7, Microsoft has no intention of cutting support for legacy hardware. If Windows 8 does end up supporting 128-bit CPUs (if any are even available from Intel or AMD when it releases) Microsoft will still release a 64-bit version, just as they support 32-bit with Windows 7 now. Thanks to this practice we saw a massive discrepancy in the amount of support Vista x64 received in comparison to it's more popular 32-bit version.

Apparently everyone thinks I'm bad at making toasts at weddings. So what? I like making them. Sue me.

And I think I'm gonna convince corporate to get Windows 7. We're still on XP.

yeh i worked at ibm when vista hit n no one we supported changed over sames gonna happen with 7

Win!

I haven't missed an episode since it was first aired, man!

It dipped in Season 5, but it's coming back again. : )

This season has been solid, at least.

I'm honestly liking Community more though.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing18d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9218d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit18d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing18d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9218d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
