IGN: Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising Review

IGN- "Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising has proven one thing: I would not last long in a modern war. Not only would I die quickly, I'd die in embarrassing ways. Nobody remembers the heroics of the soldier that stuck his head up in the midst of a hail of gunfire or the idiot that ran out into the open field without checking for enemies on the perimeter. Keep your head down. Keep your adrenaline in check. These are the lessons you'll have to take to heart if you want to survive on the battlefield; in real life or in Operation Flashpoint."
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Rating Description

5.0 Presentation
Don't come looking for bells and whistles, or even any cutscenes introducing a level.
7.0 Graphics
A wide open world that occasionally looks underwhelming.
6.0 Sound
Rarely will the gunfire or explosions pack the punch you'd expect. The voice acting could be a lot better.
8.0 Gameplay
Unique, realistic, and fun. The hardcore will have a ball. Just be prepared for some technical shortcomings.
8.0 Lasting Appeal
The open nature of the quests and co-op play offer great replayability. The multiplayer needs to be cleaned up to really take off.

7.8
Good OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

After I played this game, and with the expectations that I had..

I gotta admit. It kinda reminds me of Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway. Not that those games can be compared, but that game let me down big time - and so did OP: Dragon Rising. It looked so much better when they showed it off.

I expected more. It's not a bad game, and it will probably keep me busy until MW2. But i'm still dissappointed. And the multiplayer doesn't work that well either. *Sigh*

I was really close to buying this game, but lately Codemasters have let me down big time....

FUEL : what the hell was that, that game was trash...

Now Operation Flashpoint: I thought it was going to be really good and after reading reviews, from people like N4G community, because websites like IGN never just come out and say don't waste your money on this trash -I will not be getting this.

So let me just get ready for Uncharted 2.. -which will keep me busy until MW2..

***So thanks for the review and the $59.95 you just saved me..***

I don't know why companies keep getting these games wrong, what keeps going wrong in game-development that is causing this. (doesn't someone in the beta testing turn to the game development team and say guys this game sucks.)

And then why do other companies get it so right, just look at the amazing job DICE is doing on bad company 2, that game is looking amazing, already pre-ordered that one.

bad company 2 will be a awesome, i love destroy environments. Looking foward to it.

dachiefsman6080d ago

Totally agree with the Brothers in Arm: HH comment. I was gonna pick this up if it got decent reviews, but like BIA:HH in sounds as though the MP is broken. FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU

Oh well Brutal Legend will hold me over till MW2

Bnet3436080d ago

I'll need a demo of this game to even start thinking about it.

Hellsvacancy6080d ago

Ign hav swayed me away from buyin it aswell, its gone back 2 bein a rental and i never tend 2 pay all that much attention 2 reviews

Brutal Legend and Borderlands will keep me happy enough

CyberCam6079d ago (Edited 6079d ago )

I for one love the game, sure it has a few bugs but over all I love the tension it creates knowing that one bullet can take you down. It forces you to move very tactically and to use your squad mates to cover your a$$. This game reminds me of the original Rainbow 6 & Ghost Recon on PC, at that time where the majority of gamers were more open minded and accepted that fact that players don't magically absorb bullets.

This game is only for the hardcore military sim gamers (mostly gamers that have a military background) that have patience and tactical awareness of one's surroundings. Running out into the open is a foolish move, especially when you have no idea where the enemy is, BUT hey if you can do it in COD you should be able to do it in this game LOL! I have it for my PS3 btw and although the mutiplayer versus is underwhelming the co-op is rock solid & FUN!

bjornbear6079d ago

But to my luck..it hasnt arrived yet..

This because, i was reading lots of user comments, fans of Operation: Flashpoint said it wasn't the same "game". It didn't have the story part, the whole dialogue thing, the humor, and the story context...its just straight forward missions, kind of like Far Cry 2...

And i don't want that =/ not worth my 70 bucks...might get MW2 instead =( shame i hoped for it to be like old O:FP with better graphics and more story =(

paul03886079d ago

I whole-heartedly disagree with this review. For a long time I wanted a game like Arma 2... but just a little more accessible. For Arma 2 I had to play with a notebook in hand to take notes on conversations and locations I should go to. That was the least user friendly game ever made in my opinion.

Flashpoint is very realistic, but very fun too. I haven't beaten it but from what I've seen so far, I like it a lot.

And a 7 for the graphics??? He definitely played a console version, because I have it on max graphics on my computer and it looks amazing. And I'm a graphics whore.

Can someone tell me, since when 7.8 a bad score? It's still above average, almost 8.0...

WHAT?!? lol... Give me a few minutes to dig up a post claiming superior graphics over KZ2.

UnwanteDreamz6080d ago (Edited 6080d ago )

This was their favorite weapon for a while. I heard it was supposed to make KZ2 look like dirt, I heard if you wanted to play a real FPS you had to play this one.

I say rub it in their faces......

No be the bigger man......

Arnon6080d ago

I heard good stuff about this game, too :(

I guess I might as well still try it out.

stevenhiggster6079d ago

Thats right, where is WhyDis these days? You don't hear much from that one anymore.

Ghoul6080d ago

while ofp2 isnt as good as i wanted it to be...

these guys clearly missed what the game is all about. its a SIM not some fancy storytelling adventure like game like COD or similar war action movie games.

Ju6079d ago

That's no reason that it underwhelms compared to other titles in the genre. I got it for the PC, though, because, I was expecting something like this and didn't want to risk the full price. PC is $40, so its alright to give it a shot. It simply can't live up to the standards and convince with the strategic element, if that's all what's left. Its not the handling, not the visuals and not the sound. Only one piece OK is simply not enough. Its not a bad game, by all means, but there are better ones out. I might get it again for the PS3 if it hits the bargain bin, I don't play online on the PC (have to create another account ?? no thank you).

RAM MAGNUMS6080d ago (Edited 6080d ago )

Those dam PC guys came here saying this game is what its all about and how I need to get my PC running for it.

then I looked at video of the game and came back to N4G saying, how can you say this is better than killzone 2. cod4 or battlefield bad company?

Those PC guys were so confident in thier ways that I actually considered upgrading my useless web surfing pc even though I havent seen 1 PC game outdo console games in 10 years.

all they talk about is crysis graphics and i played crisis on not so optimal settings and the core game is crap.
looks like the PC is going to need Bluray much sooner than everyone expected.

And thats the last time i take anything a PC gamer says seriously.

On second thought, have i just been brainswashed by IGN? I think I have. I didnt even click on the link. I looked at the score, made my rant and dismissed the game in 10 seconds. im still passing on the game but I never do what I just did or have I?

(Confused and disoriented)

JeffGUNZ6080d ago

I was looking forward to this game big time. It was suppose to come out this summer but they pushed it back to the fall. I expected great reviews, and all I am seeing are bad ones. I was seriously contemplating picking this game up, but now I will just wait till MW2.

Fishy Fingers6080d ago (Edited 6080d ago )

Which PC gamers? I'm one of the few to be found here on N4G and I've seen no saying that. Either way, the original was a great game and you cant blame some for thinking the sequel would follow suit, Codemasters dropped the ball on this one that's for sure.

Still, it's a good game and I'll probably give it a rent. Doesnt have to be straight 10's to be worth a play through.

evrfighter6080d ago

you sure they weren't talkin about arma 2?

Pandamobile6080d ago

What the christ are you talking about?

mcslick1016080d ago

Look, people make mistakes and MS FBs and PS3 FBs always overhype their exclusive IPs like Killzone 2 or Halo, the fact is there PC gaming is NOT what it used to be and it's been my primary gaming machine since the original fallout.

1. We DO have it better when it comes to graphics, hardware(obvo), community and online support(lower TCP range). If you become used to playing on a PC you'll find it is best for Multi-plat(Excluding some cases).

2. Games files(Models, textures etc.) or even Engine can be modified allowing TCMs which gives even more gameplay time. Also it s a thrill to mod even if your skill is in the audio section or texture artist , it's always nice to make a difference.

3. MMOs and exclusives like CS,TF2 Updates,Audiosurf, Almost the Entire Unreal series which is fundamentally sh*t on consoles.

4. Emulators - F*ck you; we got "reverse compatibility" for everything!

cyberwaffles6079d ago

LMFAO! RAM sounds like a high dude talking incoherently and somehow someone understands and agrees with him!? lol RAM, lay off the m. jane.

Ju6079d ago

Yeah, I expected more. It runs fine on my PC 1920x1200 with 4MSAA, but, well, I stare at an empty screen. (Nice textures, sharp details, but still empty).

Then I put MAG in and ran into a 256 domination game. My screen almost burst because there was so much going on it dripped out at the sides. Its not always the raw power that counts (but that one (OFP) doesn't even max out anything).

I know PC gamers that dont even know what an HDMI cord is. The truth is though, true hard core gamers know that the pc is best when it comes to multiplats because of community support. Alot of PC gamers think they are hardcore, when in fact they are as hardcore as a Wii addict.

Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising – The FPS I’ve Needed

Twinfinite's Henry McMunn revisits Codemaster's military simulator and realises it was actually really great all along.

Agree

Play Red River next... Tell us if it's worth it!

porkChop4481d ago

Dragon Rising wasn't bad, but it had a lot of questionable design choices. Red River was just horrible in every aspect, huge step down from DR.

BALLARD324480d ago

Yup, Dragon Rising had some potential, but it was way too restricted from what I remember. Red River was indeed horrible. Wish I hadn't wasted the money on that one.

djplonker4480d ago

Ugh I just remembered this game and it makes me want to me sick in a bowler hat and drown myself in it....

The only good thing about this game was borderlands was out a week later!

Elwenil4480d ago (Edited 4480d ago )

Dragon Rising was a really great idea but with Codemaster's typically shoddy execution of anything not racing related. Their poor handling of the criticism, bugs and outright lies on the packaging was eerily similar to EA's BF4 flustercluck. The game was a breath of fresh air in many ways and was really the only truly tactical, open map shooter of it's kind on consoles. Anyone who played the original Flashpoint or ARMA games would feel pretty comfortable with Dragon Rising. It's just a pity Codemasters dropped the ball completely on the online portion, allowed several annoying bugs to remain to this day and lied about features in the game and later charged for these promised features as DLC. With the way they handled the whole situation, Codemasters earned the first spot on my ever expanding list of developers that I refuse to buy anything from them. Again, much like BF4, you can easily see the awesome game it could have been and yet it's still totally out of reach.

Hidden gems of the generation (Part I: First Person Shooters)

There are games wich shine with light. However, not all games have the same opportunity to receive support from their editors.

This results in remarkable games, even outstanding, which have been forgotten or, unfortunately, were never known by the mass audience. Even their reviews, do not capture the true quality of the title, since most anticipated games, are unfortunately better received in the newsroom.

Screw "realism" in video games

"I’m tired of the need for more 'realism' in games. I don’t want to hear about how realistic Call of Duty is while you’re cowering behind cover watching the red Kool-Aid disappear from your screen. I don’t care if Battlefield 3’s bullet drop somehow makes it a better shooter. Does it really matter if you play Forza Motorsport, Gran Turismo, or Need for Speed? They all look and feel fantastic; why does it matter if one is more realistic?

"You want to see a realistic game? Go play Operation Flashpoint on the hardest difficulty. After you’ve gotten out of the fetal position, tell me how enjoyable it was. Unless you happen to be a masochist, I’m going to bet you didn’t have a very good time. That’s realistic.

"We use video games as an escape, just like movies, literature, and music. They tell us stories, let us make our own, or let us live out an experience. I can’t drive a race car (heck, I don’t even have a license), but that doesn’t stop me from playing Need for Speed. The cor...

Batzi5082d ago

Exactly. I love the fact that you can jump and shoot with a .50 cal sniper rifle in COD. That adds to the fun whereas realism reduces the fun and makes the gameplay boring. Games aren't suppose to be realistic, we as human beings are very limited when it comes to abilities and powers and such and having game designers implementing what we fantasize the most in terms of technology and surreal action in video games make us people happy cause we get to experience our own "world", the world of fantasies and joy in those games which brightens our imagination and give us something to think about. If I wanted realism, I would rather stick to the life outside of home and drive a real car instead of playing GT5/Forza for instance. Realism ruins the fun, fun is surreal or simply like our folks at Epic Games call it, Unreal.

SeekDev5082d ago

Some people would like the opportunity to "be" a soldier, so to speak, but without having to risk their life to do it. In that sense, realism in games is wanted. Some people would like to hop around in a land full of giant mushrooms and clouds you can stand on, and that's where "unreal" games come in. There's a place for all types of gamers in this world.

WeTheBelievers5082d ago

Doesn't an escape from one reality into another make all the more magic though?

StreetsofRage5082d ago

Operation Flashpoint on hard is BOMB! I loved it! Intense! One of the few games that was genuinely hard and not just cheap like playing COD on veteran.

TheColbertinator5082d ago

Most of my favorite games this gen are unrealistic

Valkyria Chronicles

Tales of Graces F

Disgaea 4

Atelier Meruru

Mass Effect 1
