Ballmer: Don't expect simpler licensing soon

"I'm sure we have fine print we don't need. We're not saints," says the Microsoft CEO.

Microsoft boss Steve Ballmer has responded to widespread criticisms regarding the company's convoluted licensing practice.

Speaking at a Q&A session following his lecture to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), Ballmer was asked if Microsoft would simplify its licensing options to customers. The question generated a round of applause.

In turn, Ballmer acknowledged the confusing nature of its own licensing options, but said that its scatter approach was in place to offer customers the best value.

Ballmer = fail. MS licensing = mega fail. Look at companies with draconian licensing vs. companies that have a simpler licensing structure and see who has the happiest corporate and home consumers.

Now do that same comparison and look at the ones that make the most money.

NomadX, I'm guessing you failed to recognise that this article has nothing to do with the gaming industry and was, in fact, referring to Microsoft's other core products - Windows, Office and so on. Try again.

bjornbear6104d ago

But does it help progression and evolution? Nope...

because apparently the customer is a microsoft cheer leader and whatever best for microsoft is best for the customer... because the customers main priority is microsofts well being.

...Like XboX Live?

M'kay.

Don't get me wrong, XBL has a value, but it's not the best bang for the buck once you go through the numbers.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio54d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing54d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9254d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit54d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing54d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9254d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
