Cnet Hands on: Is Uncharted 2 worth the wait?

Cnet: Making a game exclusively for a single console is a tricky proposition: it's hard to justify the multimillion-dollar budget required for a truly A-list product while limiting your potential audience to owners of only one of the three major living room consoles. Nevertheless, Microsoft has its well-regarded Halo and Gears of War games, Nintendo has a stable of famous franchises, and Sony has Uncharted (while still holding back on God of War and Gran Turismo for PlayStation 3).

Sony's Saturday matinee-style adventure was an early hit for the PS3, and its sequel has built tremendous buzz over the past year, based on carefully constructed sneak peeks and trailers. We've spent this past weekend playing Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (out October 13) in order to determine if it lives up to the hype.

Wait...wait..wait...w.a.i.t
Why wasn't this said of Gears of War or Halo? Why must this be said of a PS3 exclusive? If you want to play this game, get a PS3.

Oh, wait...never mind. Its cnet.

mastiffchild6089d ago (Edited 6089d ago )

It's certainly not the most balanced approach to games journalism ,now is it?

Besides, if the gamers are happy, Sony are happy(who own ND so why the effin hell wouldn't it be exclusive anyway!)then who are Cnet to moan. The game looks and plays fantastically, has a great story and the acting is as good as in any game I can recall(from the amount we've all seen anyway which is plenty really)-in what way should we care about the dev cycle? It's taken just two years and we have no idea how it's gonna sell or what Sony need it to-Sony know how varied the PS3 demographic's tastes are too-it isn't like 360 which, due to the vast number of Halo fans, has a shooter heavy bias. Anyway I reckon they'll have done their sums and this game will build on the success of the last and as I'm getting what looks to be a fabulous experience I, for one, won't be worrying like Cnet seem to be.

"Still, after several hours, a few minor flaws become obvious. The basic game mechanics haven't changed much from the original Uncharted; walk down a mostly linear path for a little while, keeping an eye out for clues or clambering over obstacles, then get involved in a firefight, requiring you to shoot back while crouching behind some crates. In the two years since the original game, the growing use of open-ended environments has made games more realistic; this feels more like a scripted amusement park ride. And many of these firefights go on for far too long, throwing wave after wave of generic foes at you in an effort to pad the running time."

STFU cnet yur nothin but another ms tool.

edit n anyone know why they suddenly decided to start dissin games? Prob jus ms sending out the troops b4 they get creamed this holiday. I mean really if any game deserves to get dissed its ODST but cnet luved it rit like all things MS Frakin bunch of two bit sell outs.

TheHater6089d ago

"walk down a mostly linear path for a little while, keeping an eye out for clues or clambering over obstacles, then get involved in a firefight"
Aren't all games like that? This article fail on so many level.
You know when a game have almost no flaws, when you read sh!t like this.

mastiffchild6089d ago

But Halo3 and Gears2 hardly moved the gameplay goalposts for those games AT ALL and it didn't prevent them being great games, did it? No, so is it a Sony game only requirement to innovare with EVERY release?

I'm sorry but this kind of uneven treament isn't going to stop anyone enjoying a game that both Sony and ND should rightly be proud of-and if Cnet think hoing against the grain on this makes them look clever they're very wrong when they're already perceived to have issues with Sony. In the circumstances Cnet are in it just looks like sour grapes when U2 has such a high meta rating. Biased or not it just looks like it gives that argument more strength as they simply don't apply the same ules when reviewing other games at all and lack of consisyenvy will always lead to calls of bias.

Godmars2906089d ago (Edited 6089d ago )

It does bring cnet's impartiality heavily into question though. Something a consumer assistant site has no reason doing unless they want to run away visits. Ruin their rep.

Honestly, how can they even attempt to portray UC2 as being more of the same when that pretty much describes the whole industry?

BulletToothtony6089d ago

the only way to get it out is by saying that it should be multiplatform..

man what a compliment!!!

Now go back to odst cnet!!

Ravage276089d ago

hm...i seem to recall some retards from a certain company that blew $50 million on 'exclusive' DLCs...Comparing this to that, i say UC2 exclusivity is fully justified.

Double Toasted6089d ago

there aren't any games that sale as well as those two you mentioned that are exclusive to the PS3. I'm almost certain that Sony is making a lot of money on its first party titles, but as far as 3rd party exclusives, thats a little questionable, for Sony and the 3rd party.

This criticism could be levied at any and all shooters from Wolfenstein 3D unto the present. Linearity is only a drawback when it kills off potential alternate solutions and anyone whose played the coop in the beta knows it's not THAT linear.

Sounds about right.

Parapraxis6089d ago

Triple Toasted, ask Konami about that.
You are always rife with FUD and wrong information.
It's really sad watching you desperately trying to sound like you know your stuff.

Nineball21126089d ago (Edited 6089d ago )

Dan Ackerman (the author) is pretty much a fanboy of MS products, imo. He has written more than one article that is slanted against the PS3.

He is more about stealth "trolling" then anything else. Case in point: "It's to Uncharted 2's credit that the game is such an excellent overall entertainment product despite the lackadaisical storytelling."

Although I haven't played UC2 yet, if the storyline is anywhere as good as the first one, I certainly wouldn't call it "lackadaisical". It's his opinion of course, but still...

morganfell6089d ago (Edited 6089d ago )

I have played the first Uncharted through so many times I have lost count. I have played the Multiplayer for UC2 until I can do it in my sleep - which I often miss for the Multiplayer. I do not ever remember getting creative in a game of Uncharted Single Player and the game suddenly ends because I outsmarted the AI or did something the devs didn't expect me to do.

Yet with cnet darling COD4 that happened repeatedly. Try sprinting past the AI in certain areas, turning around and mowing them down and watch what happens. COD titles are the princes and kings of the linear nation. Nothing wrong with that but there is a right way and a wrong way to do it and ND reigns over IW in this respect.

Is the fact that UC2 tells a story which requires certain player direction so heinous in the eyes of cnet they feel it is worth bringing to the forefront and attacking? So now good story telling is evil? No.

I will tell you what is really evil.

A website (cnet) that once upon a time in ages past did something respectable. In this case it was only that cnet did it first, not necessarily right. So now they have a soapbox from which they may spew unchecked idiocy. They are like some 90 pound kid with a firehose of stupidity and it is spraying helter skelter all over the place. They can't or won't control it. Amazing that it seems only Sony gets hosed down by such moronic and incompetent writing.

deadreckoning6666089d ago (Edited 6089d ago )

LOL, all these conspiracies towards the PS3. Gamespot and IGN were paid off to give ODST a good review and now CNET is part of the conspiracy as well. U guys are full of crap. A month ago Eurogamer was the biggest one on the sh!t list and they gave Uncharted 2 at PERFECT SCORE. Even CNET gave PS3 higher a score than the 360. Im srry, but u guys are playing victim too much. PS3 already won 2009.

Lifendz6089d ago

It's an essential proposition. It's absolutely crucial to a console's success. Exclusive IPs and/or functionality are what drive sales. If Sony didn't have the in-house blockbuster titles that they do I may not have considered getting a PS3. Heck, the entire console is a risky proposition. Web Browser, upgradeable HDD, blu-ray, the cell, etc etc. Like the saying goes "scared money don't make none."

Cnet really needs to step their game up.

morganfell6089d ago (Edited 6089d ago )

deadreckoning666 says, "U guys are full of crap."

Really?

Open Zone that way =======>

@Lifendz

And the only way we see the envelope really pushed, broken, and burned is by certain exclusives. Was Gears of War, made by Epic who are 3rd Party, ever criticized by cnet for it's exclusivity? Mass Effect? Hello?

People try to discount such truths by painting you as a conspiracy nut but the facts ignore nametags that attempt to cover them up.

Greywulf6089d ago (Edited 6089d ago )

"Skip the PS3 Slim and get one of these Blu-ray laptops"

97 metacritic says

yes.

jmare6089d ago (Edited 6089d ago )

The author is a moron considering that Naughty Dog is owned by Sony so it's extremely unlikely that they will be making games for anyone else. So it sucks because it's not an open-world game? 90% of games aren't open world because either the designer has a vision for the story and the experience or they just can't come up with enough content to keep people interested in the game. And last time I checked, Halo, COD, Gears, MOH, BIA, Doom, Wolfenstein, and pretty much every other shooter is linear. So is Mario, Ninja Gaiden, GT, Forza, NFS. Most games are linear.

jut4206089d ago

Headline should say....CNet: Will gamers ever take them seriously?

cmrbe6089d ago

he is one of the idiot journalist that don't know that ND is 1st party. There is no point at all talking about its exclusivity as Sony would never go multi-plat on other console holders consoles. Epic Fail.

ikkokucrisis6089d ago

CNET wrote - "We love Halo ODST and it's exclusive only on 360!"

CNET also wrote - "Uncharted is pretty darn good, but it would be even better if it were multiplatform!"

okay...

HolyOrangeCows6089d ago (Edited 6089d ago )

Just another stupid PS3 bashfest. A stealthy suggestion that ''ps3 has teh no gamez!!''

erathaol6089d ago (Edited 6089d ago )

Its good fun reading from long standing 'critics' of Sony as they struggle to say good things about Uncharted 2 or just seeing them desperately trying to find anything bad to say about the game.

badz1496088d ago

cnet downplaying anything sony. anything new?

DaTruth6088d ago

I'm pretty sure cnet is run by Viacom, which is owned by Microsoft! It's not a conspiracy this time!

Jake11116088d ago (Edited 6088d ago )

If you want the truth if a site is bias or not it is very simple. Just look at their sponsors... On CNET, click on the tab MORE.. notice how there is a tab for Microsoft..! :)

Notice how there are microsoft ads all over the place???

Simple as that. If a site continuously downplays the amazing attributes of sonys exclusive developers they are being subsidized by MS! Period....

They gave Halo ODST the same score as UC2... This is commical! lol...

DigitalAnalog6088d ago

The author's eyes are so full of 360 fanboyism he can't see the fact that ND is a first-party studio.

I guess Uncharted 2 is so epic it blew his logic off-course..........

Most likely he's looking at the screen and cursing knowing he is holding a PS3 controller and not a 360 controller.

""We've spent this past weekend playing Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (out October 13) in order to determine if it lives up to the hype.""

Sorry cnet but you are quite late on deciding that. The fact that Uncharted 2 has a 97% on metacritic shows that it has lived up to the hype.

Relientk776089d ago

Um they obviously fail and havn't played the demo

It IS worth the wait

the demo is flawless fun

xcox6089d ago

the cool thing is, once millions of gamers get their hands on that game, it'll be easy for them to get back to these "reviewers" and see which ones have their face covered with M$ cum

Why Dat6089d ago

lol, you guys are hilarious. So true everything said.

Bumpmapping6089d ago

Def CNET isn't fooling anyone besides the Xtards that read their trashy site.

morganfell6089d ago

Well xcoc the best way for gamers to get back is to look at the cnet ads and then write those companys and tell them that due to cnet's idiotic editorial policies you are boycotting them and you will see that every forum you visit are aware of their stupidity.

Hit cnet where it hurts, in the pocketbook.

xcox6089d ago

@morganfell

yeah, boycot is the way to go.
i never go out w/o my AdBlock+ and i only disable it for very specific sites that have earned that privilege.

this way, i don't give hits to corporate c0ck suckas and believe me:
advertisers are scared sh!tless about digital ad boycot spreading like... torrent

power to real gamers and this gen: they're on PS3
no doubt

bubbles on da house

Uncharted 2 Is the Most Important PlayStation Exclusive of All Time

In a list of games that defined the PlayStation 3, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves would certainly be one of the top contenders. The blockbuster sequel to 2007’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune not only received critical acclaim and became a massive hit for Sony’s third console when it was released 15 years ago on October 13th, 2009, but it also cemented Naughty Dog’s future as a developer of cinematic, story-driven action-adventure games as opposed to its history of colorful platformers like Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter from previous PlayStation generations. To this day, Uncharted 2 stands as one of the PS3’s best exclusives and one of the most important PlayStation games of all time.

gold_drake577d ago

it was pretty good. especially the multiplayer

KyRo577d ago

I loved this era on multiplayer games from Sony. People used to call the modes tacked on multiplayer but they were enjoyable. I loved Factions even more. I'm Still gutted that the second one isn't coming out.

-Foxtrot577d ago

Yeah, that one game where it not only has an amazing single player but the multiplayer was also just as good.

A fresh a breath air with it's more "skill focused, less is more" multiplayer in a time during COD fever where every other game with online was trying to be like it.

Shame NaughtyDog eventually did do COD like things with Uncharted 3 and 4, they ruined what made the original so good. It become an over the top arcade fest in the end.

Inverno576d ago

Ironic cause the MP was basically Halo, and Bungie helped on the technical side of things too. MP was more simple back then, I've said this before but I played U2 MP religiously. I sucked at it like you have no idea, but mah gawd did I have so much fun. Can't find an MP game that hooked me like U2s these days. Then Factions came along and while it had its problem I found new religion with it. Agh damn it why did they cancel Factions 2 bruhh.

gold_drake576d ago

i had so much fun too, played almost every night with mates or cousins baha

Relientk77577d ago

It is for sure my favorite game in the series. It's such a blast to play. The train levels still hold up and are fun as hell as well as the entire game.

RaidenBlack577d ago (Edited 577d ago )

Still remember the first gameplay video ... shooting the chasing truck and then the beautiful visuals & details whilst traversing the dilapidated Nepal streets ... perfection
Too bad Sony never ported the trilogy to PC ...

RaiderNation577d ago

I would argue it's God of War.

darthv72577d ago

I'll say, the PS3 really did sequels better than people give it credit for. Resistance 2, Uncharted 2, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Infamous 2... all were better than their initial offerings and still hold up to this day.
