TheGo: Risen Review

Taking a cue from Bethesda and other RPG makers, first-time German developer Piranha Bytes introduces a new franchise to the genre in the form of Risen. But unlike anything that Bethesda made in the form of Fallout 3 or Oblivion, Piranha Bytes tries everything in their power to make things that sound great on paper and....

Dear reviewer, please note: Piranha Bytes is NOT a "first-time" developer. They made a little big RPG series called Gothic.

Baka-akaB6066d ago

Sure , but gothic 1-2 were hardly awesome. gothic 2 was even quite criticized as well .

It's something mostly for gothic fans out there , or to kill time while waiting for maybe a far better Dragon ages 2 , gothic 3 , or Witcher 2

MK_Red6066d ago

I'm not a Gothic fan. Just saying that they are not first time devs. Plus, there are a lot of Gothic 1-2 fans among PC RPG gamers from what I've heard and most of them have liked Risen so far, comparing it to Gothic 2.
I haven't played any of them so, no comment on quality of them from me.

@Baka-akaB
You didn't even get 2/3 of those titles correct for one thing. Next, they've been developing games since 1997. That's not a first time developer in any stretch of the means.

Mozku6066d ago

I played the demo, and it deserves way better than this. Maybe 8/10, but the combat really lacks depth.

Very good for killing time before Dragon age. :P

I actually WANT to try it now.

LeCocky6066d ago

That version is a mess, PC version however shows why it's a Gothic 1&2 fans dream (think of it like Gothic 3 done right).

Has everything you'd like from all previous Gothic games in the same tradition of lot's to explore, lot's to do, and a combat system where you don't just keep mashing the attack button and have to actually dodge/block/parry if you plan to progress.

MK_Red6066d ago

Have you played it? Does it have level cap? Do enemies level up with you (I really hate this feature)?

LeCocky6066d ago (Edited 6066d ago )

MK_Red, I have played it and almost finished, it has a level cap from what I have heard though I haven't reach it but the enemies don't level up with you.

I wouldn't really recommend this sort of game to anyone who hasn't played the previous Gothic 1 and 2 games, solely because of the combat system, majority of people who seem put off by it aren't playing it right i.e. they play the game just hitting the attack button only in the beginning to later discover they're getting killed really fast doing just that instead of blocking, parrying, side stepping, back stepping and of course not using the front/side/back/charged attacks instead of just the normal attack.

There's lots of timing and learning to defeating enemies in this game, and that's just the combat, there's then the non-hand holding system of quests, exploration, character development etc.

Thanks for your reply and help.
I always wanted to play Gothic 2 since I'm a huge fan of PC RPGs but never got the chance. With no any auto-level up, there is no major funkiller for me so, I'll give it try. I've heard of combat being hard but there aren't many good RPGs around and if the RPG inside this game is any good, hopefully I can ignore graphical and other problems.

I'm playing the game right now (i live in europe) and it's a god d@mn shame PC developers are f@cking up the X360 ports over and over again.
It's the same old b@llshit like Two Worlds and Dark Messiah.
The PC version of the game is good but the X360 port is downgraded to a playstation game.
Americans don't need to wait for this game untill spring 2010....just skip the X360 version to eternity.(buy the PC version if you can)
I'm going to try and finish the game (just like Tow Worlds) but i'm going to sell it a.s.a.p.
There are some good points in the game but you need to be a hard RPG player to like them.(i hope i'm hard enough)

I played it a bit, but it's one of those games I just forgot about. Same with the two worlds games, gothic 3 and Arcania: Gothic 4. It sounds and looks nice (for the time) but it just doesn't scratch that itch quite right.

shinoff21831028d ago

Idk why but I usually like their games , risens, elex etc. I've only played risen 2 risen 3, elex and elex 2. I'm gonna get the risen 1 at some point

isarai1028d ago

Two Worlds 2 was also incredibly ambitious, wish the sequel would've happened

jznrpg1028d ago

Their games have a certain level of jank and wouldn’t hurt to be more difficult but I still had a good time with Two Worlds 2 and would have bought a 3.

shinoff21831027d ago

Shit elex took me a minute to stop being killed but once I learned a few tricks , etc I was doing good

These games "look" good from video clips/screenshots, but apparently they're pretty buggy and gameplay is wonky.. like developers had a great concept but with the scope, it was hard to deliver.. and that's for 3 games..

Review - Risen (PS4) | WayTooManyGames

WTMG's Aaron Price: "The long and short of it is that Risen is a fun action-adventure RPG. It is very rough around the edges, not to the extent of some other games in the genre that came out around the same time (looking at you, Two Worlds), but it has charm. If you’re a fan of Oblivion, or Skyrim, and want to see another game that has a similar style, this might be a good pickup.

Risen 2 is still available for digital download meaning you can easily get lost in this world but hours upon hours if you found yourself enjoying it. I don’t personally find this re-release to be a massive improvement over the original, as little to nothing in it has been actually revamped, but it’s still great to see the game get a release on more consoles than just the Xbox, or even just a way to experience the start of the series if you maybe played the sequel on PS3."
