Not so High Definition

Digital Foundry writes:

"Digital Foundry's shock of the week: Tekken 6, one of the most anticipated fighting games of the year, has an ugly secret. Blocky, blurred and clearly upscaled, it is the latest example of the "not so high definition" generation: games designed for HD consoles that fall short of the visual quality we should be expecting from our hardware.

The rumours surrounding Namco's flagship fighting game - going cross-platform for the first time - have been floating around tech forums for the last couple of weeks, based on screenshots from various sources, none of them conclusive. Analysis of Xbox 360 screens released to date reveals native resolutions of anything from 1280x720, to 1360x768 to full-on 1080p. On the other hand, PS3 assets released so far reveal a disappointing 1024x576 resolution - over 33 per cent of the 720p detail gone, just like that.

The disparity between the available Xbox 360 shots was enough for Digital Foundry to suspect that something was clearly amiss, and based on the preview code we have available, direct HDMI dumps reveal a 1024x576 framebuffer on default settings. All of which sounds like another cross-format catastrophe, but the reality is somewhat more intriguing and, at the same time, rather bizarre."

Failbox 360 gimping our games again. M$ holding back the industry...-_-

PirateThom6054d ago

I think you should read it, it's a pretty interesting article that doesn't actually really talk about the PS3 version (or even the PS3 much) at all.

GiantEnemyCrab6054d ago (Edited 6054d ago )

You really can't come to any conclusions from just screen shots and these guys are assuming a lot from screens that we have no idea where they are in the development process.

However, if you read the article the 360 is hardly gimping the game. There is evidence of actual HD resolutions on the 360 while the PS3 seems to have sub-HD.. So if anything it's the PS3 gimping itself.

I thought the PS3 was the "lead" platform on this game.. ?

@below: I read the article just fine. Pixel shading and fill rates seem to be the biggest contributor to poor multiplats on the PS3 is what I take from this article.

droid and bot6054d ago (Edited 6054d ago )

@1.2
it looks like you didn't read it your self
let me sum things up for you
the only thing that makes multiplats look better
is AA and blur effects
and thats it

just look at those 2 pics and the video and you'll know what i mean

Greywulf6054d ago (Edited 6054d ago )

I mean.. come on bots.

You know multiplat games will be 4% better on the 360 due to its ease of development over the ps3 for some developers.

But we all know that 360 exclusives/multiplats all pail in comparison to devs that actually use the PS3, and make games that the 360 simply couldn't run if it tried. MGS4/Uncharted is all examples of this.

The only time bots can pretend that their 360 can put out amazing visuals, is when its some buffer compared to a corner of a ps3 multiplatform game. Bots want to pretend that every single multiplatform game isn't designed to perform virtually identical, and yet thats the showcase of the PS3's capabilities? lol.. okkkkk.

wowzers!

randomwiz6054d ago (Edited 6054d ago )

atleast read this paragraph:

"The reason that 1024x576 resolution has been introduced is to accommodate the dynamic motion blur system that Namco-Bandai has added to the game. Similar to Killzone 2 and Uncharted 2, this effect is realistically calculated in order to produce the effect of motion smoother than the actual frame-rate. It actually works rather well, and the developers have added code that makes the game arguably look superior in some respects to the higher resolution mode. "

or this one:

"So in choosing between the two options, you're effectively selecting fewer jaggies (768p) instead of nice motion blurring, and higher quality, sharper textures (576p)."

or this one:

"While our analysis has been limited to the Xbox 360 version of the game, it has to be noted that Tekken 6 is an arcade game running on PlayStation 3 hardware. Will this translate into higher performance on the Sony platform? Digital Foundry will have the definitive answers. "

or this sentence:

"But the staggering thing is that in this case, the extra resolution does virtually nothing for image quality."

GiantEnemyCrab6054d ago (Edited 6054d ago )

Yes, I read all those points but what does that have to do with the 360 "gimping" the game as comment #1 stated?

I don't see how not mentioning any of that changes my point in any way.

ReviewsArePolitics6054d ago

"I read the article just fine. Pixel shading and fill rates seem to be the biggest contributor to poor multiplats on the PS3 is what I take from this article."

Is ignorance your last-name? If anything pixel shading is much better on PS3 than 360, at least as far as GPUs go; 360's advantage would be vertex shading, but that's only if we assume the Cell processor remains idle; you could argue about the 360 CPU but that doesn't do graphics.

If you wanna talk trash about PS3 why don't you do some research for a change.

patterson6054d ago

Giant Enemy Crab you need to re-read the article. This was about the 360 version, NOT the PS3 version.

Ghostflight6053d ago

Maybe that the PS3 is the superior version after all. Have to wait until it's released or brought up in a review first.

randomwiz6053d ago

I don't disagree with that point, but I was responding to this:

"There is evidence of actual HD resolutions on the 360 while the PS3 seems to have sub-HD.. So if anything it's the PS3 gimping itself.

I thought the PS3 was the "lead" platform on this game.. ? "

No kidding. It pisses me off that these xbox fanboys can't see how M$ is literally stopping progression in it's tracks. Why support a company that uses tatics to get every possible nickel and dime out of you and for what? An inferior piece of crap that breaks every two minutes and ruins the quality of gaming. Look toward the future for christ sakes. You will not live forever so why not push this technology as far as it can go in your lifetime. M$ takes everything back to the stone age. F*CK MAN! Open your stupid ass eyes. THERE IS A REASON THEY GET SUED EVERY SINGLE DAY. They're corrupt scum lords who deserve to die. Their gain is your loss assh*les.

"Why do xbots insist on talking about graphics?"

Because that's what you ps3 idiots always rave about!!! Jeez! Moron.

thereapersson6053d ago

PS3 fanboys only do it because 360 fanboys insist on concentrating their hardest on game comparisons and which multiplatform games are "superior".

The coin flips both ways...

Obviously i also have been hearing these rumors for some time and i wasn't surprised at all. While the xbox360 can out put 1080p without sweating the ps3 on the other hand for some reason struggles to run at 1080p which could be due to poor processor and GPU.....anyway i know which version i'm getting.

mrv3216054d ago

Your right the PS3 has no 1080p 60FPS games, oh WAIT it has Wipeout.

Halo: ODST, 600p, my PS2 games looks better than that. :P

Killzone 2 looks better than anything ever seen on 360 full stop.

Infact Uncharted looks better than Gears of War 2... heaven knows what is looks like compared to Uncharted 2.

kaveti66166054d ago

@MRV

I agree with your OPINION that Uncharted 2 looks better than Gears of War 2, but do you honestly know what the difference is between and OPINION and a FACT?

mrv3216054d ago

Whilst I agree, graphics are mostly down to opinion, but there's no doubt in my mind that Uncharted 2 is more colourful and handles lighting and explosisons a lot better than gears 2, and let's not mention the texture pop-in or fire.

LittleBigSackBoy6054d ago

did he just say the PS3 has a "poor processor"? lmfao compared to what? the 360?

First of all this is Eurogamer an infamous 360 fanboy site. Second of all the games not even released yet so this is complete BS not even copies have been sent out to reviewers

kaveti66166054d ago (Edited 6054d ago )

Okay. We'll wait. We'll wait until the game is released and then some unbiased site may do a study and find out which version has a higher resolution.

EDIT: It really doesn't matter to me either way. I don't think fighting games are worth 60 bucks because they don't have full stories and the gameplay is limited to fighting in a restricted environment. I won't even say anything if the PS3 version of the game has a lower resolution than the 360 version because most people who point that out only do so to imply that one console is inferior to the other, and judging by what we have seen in games like Uncharted and Killzone and The Last Guardian, I wouldn't in my opinion, agree with anyone who said the PS3 hardware was weaker. I would be willing to agree that the 360 hardware is a lot more powerful than some people give it credit for.

gaffyh6054d ago

Doesn't really matter to me, I'm getting it on PS3 no matter what due to the controller's D-pad. Soul Calibur and SF4 with the 360 pad really did not work well, so I'd rather get Tekken on PS3.

Kain816054d ago

"Digital Foundry only analyzed the 360 version. The game is running at 1024x576 with full motion blur activated and no anti-aliasing. The 1360x768 resolution mode is pointless since it doesn't support motion blur which is the main technical feature of the original BR game and there is a loss in textures detail...Those who have played the arcade version can tell you how incredible the motion blur is. I guess this is too much for the 360 to handle at 60 frames/second.

PS3 analysis will come later when they get their hands on the preview code and it might do better. No, I'm sure it will since the game was built on the PS3. I expect at least the same resolution (with motion blur on) + 2XAA."

Greywulf6054d ago

Tekken was thrown under the bus by many when it went multiplat, because most knew the game would get gimped due to the 360's hardware not being able to push out games like killzone2/Uncharted/GT5p etc. Kinda like FF13. These games all could have been install-less streaming 720p/1080p wonders, but yet again suffer from a developer trying to get equal graphics out of both titles, which always gimps the PS3 version. More importantly, Tekken as a franchise was thrown under the bus by 360 owners. Things like "LOL DOA IS BETTER!" and I doubt any 360 owners have been playing tekken since 1.

Not getting a game to run in a decent resolution is the developers problem, cant blame it on the hardware when the PS3 outputs Uncharted2 which is the best looking console game ever made, and more technically demanding than a fighting game. Yet, the 360 audience pretends its some minor victory of relevance to prove the 360 can still run bad code?

The one thing I love about these stories, is that in PS3 articles you always see these phantom disagrees, with no responses. These rare times allow you to communicate with the shadow guild of fanboys that hide behind the disagree button for some chest pounding for a games resolution!

Welcome back boys! Where are my poppers. Its a celebration!

ReBurn6054d ago (Edited 6054d ago )

Funny how the first reaction is to try to defame the source. So direct framebuffer dumps are not credible? If it were the PS3 with the better resolution the same people (^^^) would be going on and on about inferior 360 hardware. But if it is the PS3 with the inferior version then it is the developers fault or the game had to be "gimped" due to 360 limitations. You can't have it both ways.

kaveti66166054d ago

Calm down. You're really making yourself look like a jackass. Talk about damage control. I don't think anyone who has posted before you in this zone has even said anything against the PS3 hardware, yet you're already defending it so zealously. It's like yelling out "Objection" in a court room before anyone has said anything.

You actually sound nervous right now. And obviously you're going to keep bringing up the heavy-hitting games on the PS3 to defend it, but really, what is your point? Why don't you just shut up? Stop being a damned fanboy and start enjoying your games. And I don't want to hear you excuses about how there are 360 fanboys who "started it first." That doesn't mean anything. Just because one group of people act like complete idiots, it doesn't justify you acting like an idiot. Grow up.

jack_burt0n6054d ago

Lol the article does not mention the ps3 version at all, if u have played the arcade version u know what u are getting.

Real Gambler6054d ago

This is turning into a war, yet:

They ONLY analysed the 360 so far. (They have not looked at the PS3 game yet, as said in the article). They do say in the article: "We'll be producing a more in-depth report once we've taken a closer look at the PlayStation 3 version of Tekken 6" Only thing they have seen is pictures, not real PS3 gaming capture.

Resolution found for the 360 is sub HD: 1024x576 If you remove the motion blur option, it then jump to 1365x768

Amazingly enough, they only analysed the 360, yet they still managed to speak about PS3 low resolution half the time. (Why not waiting until they can analyse the game on the PS3?)

Overall though, if you forget the little un-needed bias, it's an awesome article explaining why they have a hard time getting 720p on BOTH consoles. Déjà vu, but still worth reading.... Not worth arguing about though!

Kushan6054d ago

"First of all this is Eurogamer an infamous 360 fanboy site."

And yet the first half of this article details on how many 360 games are sub-HD, how Microsoft tried to cover it up and how their flagship title was given a free pass while everyone else had to work around it. Then they mention, at least 4 or 5 times, that this particular in-depth analysis is ONLY done on the 360 since they don't have any PS3 code to test with and thus can't say anything about it, other than the Arcade game itself actually running on PS3 hardware.

Yeah, that sounds VERY fanboyish to me. It doesn't sound fair and balanced at all...oh wait, yes it does and if you got your head out of your ass for 5mins and read the article, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how interesting it actually is.

Boody-Bandit6054d ago (Edited 6054d ago )

Funny how most Tekken 6 news averages 50 to 100 degrees but this article will catch fire because there might be a possible discrepancy in the final product (which isn't going to happen).

I am on the fence about this game. It should have launched a year ago and it's coming out at a bad time of the year. I will play it but doubt I will pick it up at launch.

I know there wont be a resolution difference between the two versions when they hit retail. There wasn't with SCIV. So why would there be with Tekken 6? Considering how long it took Namco to finish this game it would be inexcusable if one was lagging behind the other in any aspect.

All I am hoping for is Namco includes a lobby system online with at least 4 players. Does anyone know if this title will have that feature? If it does than I will pick it up launch day.

randomwiz6054d ago

1. They are analyzing the 360 version only

2. They say the sub HD resolution(1024x576) looked better than the higher resolutions

3. The ps3 version also runs at 1024x576

4. They conclude with the ps3 could end up having better performance because it was "an arcade game running on PlayStation 3 hardware", they'll know when they get the ps3 preview code.

My Comment: ps3 dpad + fighting games = :)

Boody-Bandit6054d ago (Edited 6054d ago )

Without question the PS3 pad is better for fighting games. I even prefer the buttons on the DS3 for fighting as well. Especially when I am using Akuma and trying to pull off his Raging Demon attack.

I have a modded stick (I prefer a circle gate to the square gate and bat top to the ball) for both consoles so I am good to go either way. I picked up SFIV for both and will eventually do the same for Tekken 6. I just don't know if it will be at launch.

omegaheat6054d ago

I usually try not to get drawn into these flame wars, but this is nothing new. The PS3 has been known for some time now as putting out sub-par HD resolutions. It's really not a big deal because just about every game now looks better than last gen. But Sony can't keep using the excuse that multiplayer games would look slightly inferior on the PS3 due to the game being developed on the 360 first, and that the 360's allegedly inferior hardware holds the game back from it's peak potential. I have one thing to say that will erase that BS out of the forums. If most multiplatform games only look better on the 360 because of it being the lead development console, why doesn't the PC and all of it's superior hardware suffer from porting? It always looks better on PC which is much more powerful than our 360 and PS3. Imagine how stupid it would sound if the devs developed a multiplatform with lead development on the PS2 and claimed that the game would be superior in visuals compared to the 360's visuals due to the hardware of the PS2 being technically inferior. Some devs are putting out some ass kicking visuals on the PS3, but they have cut corners in certain areas of the games to get the best possible performance out of it's GPU and ram. The GPU of the 360 is superior to the PS3's, but I'm sure there are things the PS3 does better than the 360. Sony shot themselves in the foot when they said "The HD era doesn't start until we say so".

Greywulf6054d ago

As I said.. This will be the hottest recent tekken story with more than 5 replies, and it is. The reason is because people love to swarm all over these lame articles like dog sh*t, and you know exactly why. Sure you can call me out all you want. Thats fair, but Im not going to pretend Tekken6 is a hot talking point on n4g.

You can base the excitement of tekken on the heat of the stories here at N4G. Most are all freezing cold because no one gave 2 rats about it until whenever this was posted. Which is why I said it doesn't matter, and went into explaining possibly why the stories have been icecold here. Which I do believe is true. The stories were way hotter on N4G before the multiplatform announcement.

The hell would I be nervous for? The 360's laundry list of SUBHD games? Again.. see the amount of Hype TEKKEN6 has had on n4g.. no one comments on the stories, there is no fanboy wars going on in the open zone. Not a single thing until today's flamebait which of course brings out the people I said it would.

I think everything you said was out of order.

ThanatosDMC6054d ago (Edited 6054d ago )

Motion Blur on Tekken?! Bad idea. I hope they dont F-up the fighting dynamics. Fighting clear with crisp graphics is better than those levels in which they blur everything that was weird on Tekken 5. They better rebalance the women too. Too much lame combos and counters.

Ling Xiao Yu is the strongest in Tekken 5 Online. Once her juggle combo is started your whole life is gone. Asuka is too cheap since her grab range is high and mid for all attacks. At least change the button combination for different counter grabs like with Marduk and King. Also, the animation is too long for the counter.

I did not murder him6054d ago

I'm not sure what you're getting at, he thought the article was showing something about the PS3 he didn't wanted to hear and proceeded to bash the site. It's not hard to Comprehend.

Eddie201016054d ago

Although miss leading they got most of there information from frame captures from various sources, it seems that the development software for the Xbox 360 allows for frame captures at higher a resolution than the games actually are running at. Many games run at sub HD resolution on the Xbox 360. They give many examples of this in the article. The PS3 frame captures are at the same resolution the game actually runs at, that happens to be the same resolution it is actually running on the Xbox 360 at default settings.

They also say upon further investigation that Tekken 6 does not run at native 720p on the Xbox 360, but runs at sub 720 resolution with motion blur turned on and runs at higher than 720p with Motion blur turned off. They also say the game looks better at the lower resolution because of some visual techniques that were used in the game.

They also mention they do not have a copy of the PS3 game to measure the actual resolution on the PS3 version of the game, but it pretty safe to say that they will probably be the same for both versions, considering the game was developed on PS3 hardware for the arcades.

The point of the article was that upon further investigation the game default resolution was lower than HD 720p on both systems.

WengYong6053d ago

They are analyzing about 6 seconds of footage stretched out to about 30 seconds, auto fail.

Personally I don't like Digital Foundry, these are the guys that tried calling out Uncharted 2 gameplay footage as CGI.

MNicholas6053d ago (Edited 6053d ago )

Pixel fill-rate and pixel shading are not related and haven't been for a very long time.

His line of thinking (fill-rate as measure of shading performance) harks back to the earliest days of programmable GPUs.

It's quaint, for sure, but incorrect.

He is right that the 10MB size of the 360's edram is too small for true high definition graphics with modern effects.

thewhoopimen6053d ago

Basically this article suggests that reading resolution off screen dumps wasn't reliable. Quite alot of fibbing was going along in the early 360 titles being released as being even "720p".

Excerpt:

On a more general level, controversy has surrounded the issue of sub-HD gaming since around the time the Xbox 360 actually launched, but some eagle-eyed journos were quick to notice that something wasn't quite right even before the console hit the streets. Working on the UK's Official Xbox Magazine at the time, UK: Resistance writer Gary Cutlack was probably the first to realise that something was amiss. Way before the online press caught on, Cutlack had figured out that the HD revolution hadn't quite begun quite yet.

"I first noticed it while reviewing launch game Project Gotham Racing 3 a few weeks prior to the console's release," Cutlack told me. "The Xbox 360 debug grabbing software - which dumps images onto a PC direct from the console's memory as you well know - was leaving me with in-game screen grabs at 1024x600, while the menu screens were the proper 1280x720. 'That's not quite the 720p Microsoft has been endlessly banging on about,' I remarked, probably to myself then to you in an email. Little did I realise this was a downsizing output scandal that could've generated sizeable Internet traffic had I 'gone public' with it. Numerous games did it in the early days - including pretty much everything from Activision."

In short, the tools supplied by Microsoft itself to games journalists gave writers the ability to get a direct dump of the Xbox 360's framebuffer, in its original format. Simply by looking at the resulting file's dimensions, you got an accurate reading of the game's actual resolution before the scaler in the Xenos GPU got to grips with upscaling the image to proper 720p. Project Gotham Racing 3 came in at a disappointing 1024x600. Perfect Dark Zero measured up at 1152x640. Tony Hawk's Project 8 achieved a measely 1040x585.

At the time, Microsoft's TRCs (the Technical Requirement Checklist) could have effectively put all of these games back to the drawing board. Pre-launch, Microsoft had promised that native 720p would be minimum, and that 2x multisampling anti-aliasing - used to smooth off jagged edges - would be mandatory. These requirements were put on hold during the launch period simply due to the fact that the game-makers only had final silicon for a few months before the system launched. Prior to that, G4 Macs with ATI graphics cards were used to emulate the console. One rumour has it that Need for Speed: Most Wanted ran on an overclocked version of this set-up for its debut on "360" at the 2005 E3.

As development on the console gathered pace, Microsoft's resolution and AA requirements seemed to relax still further, up until the point where recently, Black Rock Studios' David Jefferies interpreted his NDA somewhat differently to most other 360 coders and revealed that Microsoft had dropped these particular TRCs completely.

ABizzel16053d ago (Edited 6053d ago )

This is an example of lazy readers. If you read the entire article you would know that the PS3 version and the 360 version are both below 720p, however, the 360 version allows you to turn off motion blur which increases the resolution to 720p, which does absolutely nothing to increase the look of the game.

Now the thing I want to know is if the arcade version is made using similar hardware to the PS3 why is the PS3 version not at a higher resolution by now seeing that the arcade version has been out for over a year. They made what looks to be a cheap arcade beat em up, instead of making the actual fighting portion the best it could be.

Comment deleted, this article's confusing... He brought so many points that I don't even know which is the principal...

Some people will think that he's bashing the PS3 but he is not. In fact, at the end he shows a couple of pics with an effect of motion blur that he says it was pioneered by Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 that makes lower resolution screens look sharper than HD.

it's a downright ugly game.

Tekken on PS2 looked incredible. Sadly, this iteration lets the series down.

Uncharted was a 3rd person action game with large environments and multiple enemies but it appeared to have vastly more detailed characters than Tekken 6.

As good as Uncharted looked, by far the best looking 1 on 1 fight scene is from MGS4. The real-time crisp, natural lighting and shadows easily surpass any fighting game on the market.

First, to answer your question:

The reason 360 to PC ports look better on the PC is because the 360's memory architecture and compatible data structures are very similar to the PCs. So porting is pretty straightforward. The PS3's architecture, on the other hand, is completely different. Data doesnt just flow in one direction but goes back and forth constantly between GPU and CPU. So this makes porting to the PS3 very difficult. Most developers don't bother using it properly so the game suffers.

GPU:
The 360's GPU's full performance capability is easier for developers to access but it certainly isn't more powerful. That's why the 360's been maxed out for a while now while PS3 games, which already demonstrate higher performance than anything on the 360, continue to show dramatic improvements as developers get better at moving data to and from the GPU and CPU of the PS3 and using the Cell to accelerate the RSX.

Where developers have succeeded in doing this you see a level of performance that's simply head and shoulders above anything else on the console market.

Example:

Uncharted is already widely acknowledged as being easily more technically advanced than any game on the 360 yet Uncharted 2 has been recognized for showing a dramatic improvement in just about every area.
