Why would you need a mod chip when you can just hack Linux?

With automatic firmware updates, it seems like more trouble than it's worth to mod these things. You can't exactly complain to the manufacturer that your modded box broke because of new firmware update if that happens a month after you modded it.

The original article for this is weeks and weeks old, the site that claims to own the chip was proven to be a hoax by some random kid somewhere in the UK (I think). This wasn't news 6 weeks ago and it certainly isn't news now.

Sony had it in the bag the minute they thought up firmware. there ain't a mod that will work from firmware to firmware and thats how it should be so if there silly enough to add the chip. Wow, what a weak post and "article". As more than a few people have pointed out, this was a fake from many weeks ago. The guy was trying to get advance orders to cash the money and never delivered.

The reason these posts and fakes keep popping up is because the Xbox 360 has been cracked wide open and it is starting to affect software sales. I know of at least 10 guys that now have modded 360's and they all stopped buying games. One guy told me he had over 20 titles now. And the mod is brain-dead simple, doesn't even need a mod chip. Funny how this never makes the "news 4 gamers".

A mod chipped was actually released about 1 to 3 months after the ps3 released.

But they were able to find the places they made and sold them and it got shut down fast and they were all jailed lol.

Just wondering though, if the Xbox 360 and Wii weren't hacked would it have affected the sales somehow [Don't just mean US sales but Worldwide sales] ?

The world isn't perfect as many know and one could argue that because a specific console has an option to get free games [even if its illegal] then "cheap" people would get it because of that.

Even if there was a perfect 100% stealth modchip that adapted to all future firmware updates... it would be moronic to use such a device at this moment. Bluray burners and blank Bluray media are far too expensive to be experimenting with burning copies of PS3 games. Imagine making a few Bluray coasters, you'd be pissing more money down the drain than you would be just buying the game straight up

But some people are hackers by nature and would get a kick out of being able to accomplish this. It would come at an expense that I wouldn't be willing to pay, especially with no guarantee that your money will be well spent.

Anyone caught online using the mod will get banned from PSN, or worse. I wouldnt be supresed if sony sent a code to brick your ps3 if you had the mod. I think they did that with the psp and its well within their rights.

Its not worth it. You'll be kicked out of online sessions, and the disks cost loads anyway.

With the high qulaity of games that PS3 is providing us with, then NO-ONE should be thinking about resorting to pirating, we should all continue to support the developers especially during hard-times.

The rumored PlayStation 3 modchip by Belzar team stirred up interest since no modchip still exists for this console. The Belzar modchip was supposed to be in beta phase (50 testers were recruited) and was ready to be manufactured, but suddenly all the ongoing buzz stopped.

One day soon, you too will be able to steal PS3 games.

I've got a mod chip in pretty much all my old consoles. Living in the UK up until this generation meant we would miss out on a lot of Japanese or American games or have to wait up to a year to finally get to play what the rest of the world is playing.

Up until now, that hasn't been required for the PS3 and that's one of the reasons I love the console. I heard that Need for speed shift is actually region locked and Sega have a number of titles they are working on to have locked. Guess they really don't want us playing Yakuza outside of Japan.

99% of my PS3 games are all from the UK, Looks like I'm going to be forced to import Demons Soul as there is no release here. If games start getting region locked more and titles don't hit all regions I can see more and more work being done on hacking the PS3.

Keep the console region free and in my eyes, there isn't a need for the chips.

Still, I found it hard to think of downloading 50GB per game from the internet, as not everybody has high speed broadband, and Blu-Ray recorders and blank disks are still too expensive.

What would be the point in getting you PS3 modded if it was even possible I mean blank Blu-Ray recordable discs are nearly as expensive as the games themselves

Even if you do download a PS3 game, its still gonna be costly to write it to a disc. A blu-ray player right now is pretty ex, followed by ex blank blu-ray discs.... Its not cheap. And who the hell is gonna dll a 50gig+ game?! That's like half of my HDD capacity, and you would probably need another 50gig to unrar it (if its zipped). No thanks, I'd rather buy a game.

It sounds like good news, but even if it actually works who has the money to spend on recordable blue ray discs considering how expensive they are atm. The only way that it would actually be worth it is if the prices come down on recordable blue ray discs considerably(like maybe $.25 to a $1.00 a disc at normal retail price). And besides I don't pirate games that I don't own until the games and the console in question is not supported anymore and/or the games and the console in question are not commercially available by the company(s) that made them.

I read an article that stated that the only reason the ps3 hasnt been hacked yet is because you can install linux on it. what that means is the linux hackers dont need to hack the system to install linux on it. so now you cannot install linux on ps3 slim and so the linux hackers are going to hack it. it seems to be true. and firmware updates cant change the way the system operates so whoever said that, your point is null and void. xbox can do the same thing

The only way a modded PS3 would be worth it is if it made it so you could play games directly of your hard drive without a disk. Otherwise, why pay for a blue ray burner and disks. Might as well buy the game.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
