Why doesn't the Xbox 360 have a web browser?

The PlayStation 3 has one. The PSP has one. The Wii has one (now free). The iPhone has one - your phone probably has one, even if it's not an iPhone. There are probably toasters out there with them.

So why hasn't Microsoft put a web browser onto the Xbox 360? Given that it owns Internet Explorer, which it has been so keen to see dominate the browser market share, and that the code base for the Xbox is similar to a Windows PC, surely it wouldn't be that difficult? Let's take a look at the various possibilities.

would you really want Explorer on your 360 so every hacker in the world could attack your gaming console? didn't think so...

James Bond5996d ago

That's what I was thinking. Whether you're a fan of MS or not, Internet Explorer sucks, plain and simple.

ShabzS5996d ago (Edited 5996d ago )

this might seem wired but i actually like ie 8 ... i'm still thinking of trying out google chrome though ... its the only browser i havent tried yet

Greywulf5996d ago

When they can charge for it?

Next up:

-Google xbla
-craigslist xbla

ambientFLIER5996d ago

greywulf - they charge for facebook on top of the xbl fee? Really???

Insomnia_845996d ago

PS3 has a browser and still hasn't been hacked, simple answer would be: because then they wouldn't have something to charge for? maybe, just saying.

darthv725996d ago (Edited 5996d ago )

why dosent the 360 have a music store? MSN music is available for pc but not for 360. Come to think of it, why doesnt the ps3 have a music store seeing as sony owns bmg and has music artists?

Just because it doesnt have a browser dosent mean it should. People are doing comparatives and see that wii/ps3 has a browser. Just because they do doesnt mean 360 does too.

There could be any number of reasons. One might be because MS just doesnt want to make one.

Montrealien5996d ago

Wait minute, MS is charging me for Facebook and twitter on my windows 7 atm also?

The main question is why would MS want us to? I know I dont need to surf the net on my TV, that`s why I have 2 PCs and a laptop, Ironicly running a MS OS. Oh, and one of those PCs is plugged to my TV. Only kids stuck in their rooms with no PC think this is really important.

gaffyh5996d ago

This is why:

1. The firmware would get hacked through the browser (very likely)
2. MS couldn't use extra services such as twitter and facebook to give value to the Gold membership.
3. They can't be bothered? Less time spent on developing = less cost to MS.

Shadow Flare5996d ago

Oh it annoys me so much when people say, "why do we need a web browser on 360?". Yeah montrealien im looking at you. Guess what? Here's a shocking fact: there are people who have a 360 who would like a web browser on their console. Every other system has it. Yet the supposed 'king of online' doesn't even have a web browser. A console owned by microsoft doesn't even have a web browser. And its pretty ironic that the only reason im making this comment is because right now, im reading this article on n4g on my ps3's web browser. On my 40" hdtv

The Wood5996d ago

funny that, EVERY console including the handhelds have a browser built-in or available. MS may not want this because it blurs the line between pc's and consoles or maybe they just dont want to put themselves in a position where they CANT make simple things like twitter and facebook seem like an 'added bonus' for live subscribers.

I use my browser to watch clips, get themes, generally surf but it will never take the place of browsing on a laptop/pc but thats not the point. MS just loves restrictions.

Montrealien5996d ago (Edited 5996d ago )

Why would that annoy you? imho, most people are more then fine with their PCs for browsing. And if you really want to brows the internet on your TV get a cable to plug your laptop on it. It will be a much better experience then the PS3s browser.

with that said, YOU feel the need to browse the internet on your PS3, thats your choice, more power to you. I just dont think there is a big market for it, and clearly, neither does MS. However that does not mean some people would not find a use for it, I am just not one, I dont want to converge my console experience with my PC experience.

I also find this all ironic, since I am typing this on my living room computer conected to my 40` TV sitting on my couche with my Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse. Ironic aint it? Just because I do this, does that mean everyone does?

I did not murder him5996d ago (Edited 5996d ago )

Windows? lol

Anyways
Who cares web browsers on consoles are worthless I use my Ipod browser over my PS3 browser because the PS3 browser is inferior to it lol.

LOL at all the PS3 fans in here concerned about this news.

Kleptic5996d ago

montrealian...thats the typical response given when a system doesn't have a certain feature...'well, most people don't need it anyway'...

doesn't change the fact that it would hurt nothing to have a browser on your 360...you may not use it much, but some would...and it would not negatively effect your console in any way whatsoever...

the PS3 launched with one that was so useless it might as well not even been there...but now its actually a very good browser...and I too have 2 laptops and a desktop and all that crap, which I could easily use for browsing the net...but I have to admit it is nice to lean back in front a 46" and just mess around with the PS3's browser...but then again, the PS3 supports wireless keyboards and mice without question...the 360 doesn't...so yeah, if you were stuck with the 360's controller for all that...probably still would be pointless...

Montrealien5996d ago (Edited 5996d ago )

I never said it would not hurt, just that in my opinion its useless. Surfing the internet on my dreamcast almost 10 years ago was nifty, but even then I realized a PC was the only way to go when it comes to surfing the internet, and up until now, that still stands. Console browsers plain suck. However, if thats all you got, surf your heart out.

All I`m saying is that If you have a PC or a laptop, especialy a laptop since you can easily plug it to your TV, a console browser is an inferior choice.

I did not murder him5996d ago (Edited 5996d ago )

No that is not true it's no wonder so many agreed with him(nothing but PS3 fanboys in here)

He must be talking about Gold member rights to the services because if he's not it makes him look more ignorant than he already does reading that comment. It was just a spiteful, bitter, envious comment because those services are coming in two weeks. You do have to pay for the premium version of the *LAST FM* service.

Cenobia5996d ago (Edited 5996d ago )

The web browser has a lot of cool possibilities though. For example, I was able to download UT3 mods to my PS3 directly. It saved a lot of hassle and it was kind of cool. MGO also did their rewards system through the browser. The konami ID thing was kind of a fiasco, but earning custom gear was pretty cool. I'm sure it could have been done in game, but I wonder if they would have done it at all if they didn't do it through a browser (I'm sure it's more complicated through the game).

Not that it would be used like those examples on the 360, but you could potentially use it to look up game reviews after playing a demo, getting walkthroughs, ordering a fudging pizza while your game is paused. You COULD get up and go to your PC, but some people don't want to have to do that.

I don't think it's needed, but it could be a nice feature. I don't understand why MS doesn't do it.

@I did not murder him
If you want to use those services on the Xbox, you HAVE to pay a monthly fee. It isn't free on the 360 no matter how you try to spin it.

Montrealien5996d ago (Edited 5996d ago )

Off course, the possibilities are endless and there are advantages, I would be stupid to denie that. I just dont think we are there yet and I guess that brings us back to the question asked here, and one answer could be that MS thinks that also.

soxfan20055996d ago (Edited 5996d ago )

Montrealien has a valid point. After all, don't PS3 fans say the same thing about lack of backwards compatability on most PS3's?

ShabzS5996d ago (Edited 5996d ago )

the other thing the list points out is that if you want a fully functional browser on your console you'll need a lot of support from 3rd party add ons....most importatnly an adobe flash player for youtube (which happens to be owned by google)... so i dont see ms going to apple and google for support on 360 and help increse their market share

Shadow Flare5996d ago

I just think its such a stupid arguement to say, "we don't need this feature when most people won't use it". Because for one thing, i bet most people would use it, and secondly just because you don't want something doesn't mean everyone doesn't want it. Why add twitter and facebook? Why add last.fm? There'll be people who won't use those things. But I THINK the whole internet is a little more popular then those sites.

Having a console web browser makes it a more complete system. You don't have to turn off your console, boot up your pc, just to google something. Frankly, a console owned by microsoft and an online service you pay for, you would expect a web browser and a good web browser. Not one hour ago, i was reading n4g on my ps3 and i read a brilliant GT5 article. I copied the URL and sent it in a message to Maddens Raiders on my psn list (who's also a member of n4g). I didn't have to boot up my frickin pc just to send that 5 second message. Saying a console web browser is not wanted is just spinning

SL1M DADDY5996d ago

If you don't want one then you would not use it if it were available. If MS implemented one then it would be a selling perk and those that WOULD use it could. Its just another idea for an option. Just because they have one does not force you to use it.

MS doesn't have one because they would rather charge you for features that come free on the PS3 due to their browser. Live is not worth it and those that say it is are those fooled into thinking it is by these special features that would more than likely disappear if they actually were smart and implemented a browser on the 360.

n4f5996d ago

im pretty sure most of the peple here have a computer/laptop therefore, why would you want a browser on a console(any console) that is conpletely inferior compare to the computer/laptop one.

ex: slow, cant access some website, cant download most of the stuff, wont be able to play game while on internet(most likely)

now ask yourself why wouldnt you want to use the superior one(i thought everyone here on n4g would take the superior one has usual) and use the inferior one.

beside its a GAME console and should remain a GAME console

PtRoLLFacE5996d ago (Edited 5996d ago )

why? lol because MS is not stupid, if u get a browser on the 360 things that you normally have to pay on xbox live u ll get them for free on the browser easy as that and that not good for MS, let say music videos, movies etc. if MS ever gets a browser on the 360 they ll probably block all websites like youtube,

Shepherd 2145996d ago

Why? Maybe because i have a laptop right next to me most of the time. Guess thats why, but what do i know right?

AAACE55996d ago

MS makes Windows so that people have an operating system to accecc the internet on a PC. If the 360 had a web browser, a large majority of people would feel no reason to get a PC. More importantly, they wouldn't feel the need to upgrade to the next Windows OS.

Me personally, I have always wished they would have put WebTV into the 360! Before I got a PC, it was my first real connection to the internet. And what ultimately lead to me getting a PC. Plus, they had a selection of music that made you want to stay on it even when you ran out of stuff to look for! Hell, I have even tried to find that same music so I can play it while i'm on my PC...lol!

IaMs125996d ago

I see your point but your being oblivious yourself. Whats wrong with adding services to something you are already paying for? Now if they charged extra thats a totally different story but when LIVE first started out it was just for gaming, now look what extra you get for the money. In the long run i bet you are paying for MS to bring it to the system but your not paying to use it and if you are you are freaking retarded.

They are simply giving more options and stuff for their paying users to use thats all. They are not charging more, whine about it more why dont you please...

glennc5996d ago

@IaMs12 - don't try and reason with a fanboy. big fat waste of time and you lose bubbles (whatever they are)

Blaze9295996d ago

Ya know...everytime there is a new update for the Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE followed by "most wanted features" and articles alike, I never seem to see Xbox 360 owners ever whining over or requesting a Internet Browser. Why? Because it...isnt...needed?

RROD Service_Rep5996d ago (Edited 5996d ago )

we dont need a web browser like every other platform has
we dont need free online gaming like on every other platform
we dont need built in wifi like every other platform

whats next?

you guys know you want a web browser, but you don't want to admit it. I guess you'd rather watch youtube videos on a small computer monitor instead of a 65" tv. I guess you dont want to watch divx videos online.

Arnon5996d ago (Edited 5996d ago )

The Xbox 360 does have an internet browser. It's accessible through the Media Center.

"you guys know you want a web browser, but you don't want to admit it. I guess you'd rather watch youtube videos on a small computer monitor instead of a 65" tv. I guess you dont want to watch divx videos online."

Maybe if you weren't so narrow-minded, you would realize you can hook up a PC to a TV.

kwicksandz5995d ago

If its anything like the browser they have on the ps3 atm

-slow
-crashes
-runs out of ram
-doesnt display pages correctly
-Annoying plugin popups all the time
-and did i mention.... sloooooooow!

i wont miss it. I have my PC to browse the web and thats the way i likes it. i doubt the consoles of this gen have the ram to run modern browsers anyway.

IaMs125995d ago

There is a MAJOR difference between your browser on the PS3 playing it on a 65" TV. I used my friends on my 52" and it was BAD quality i mean you had to Zoom in to see most fonts. It was handy watching youtube videos but thats why i have an HDMI port on my laptop too so i can hook it up if i want to or not.

And Xbox does need wifi/free service but thats not TOP priority we want more games!!

@Glenn lol your right man, no matter what you say, Bubbles up for ya

TheAntiFanboy5995d ago (Edited 5995d ago )

But the Xbox does have a browser. It's accessible through the Media Center.

This article's been completely debunked.

vhero5995d ago

They know it sucks but the problem is they couldn't then charge you for facebook and twitter if they gave you a web browser could they? As you could get them free through your browser..

Karum5995d ago

Nicely spun, but here's it broken down for you.

If you want to use those services on your 360, you have to stump up some cash.

If they implement a web browser into the 360 then that gold subscription suddenly becomes worth less in terms of value added services.

5995d ago
IaMs125995d ago

Oy some people still thinking they are charging you facebook and twitter which they are not! They are adding more value to be a gold member! I highly doubt if they had a browser it wouldnt be for Silver members anyways! Gold membership is the VIP lounge for XBL, sigh...

IE 8 isnt that bad lol i think most people hate it because it is associated with MS thats all but Firefox is alot faster and better so yay! Thats why i use Firefox

randomwiz5996d ago

I like how IE8 feels but, its been proven to be slower than IE7, firefox and chrome are much faster.

BUT, IE8 is supposed to be the most secure browser around, according to a study (by msn)

ASSASSYN 36o5996d ago

Why we are at it. Why no mouse, lasers, toilet paper, and 22" rims.

TheDeadMetalhead5995d ago (Edited 5995d ago )

Actually the 360 could use Keyboard+Mouse support for its games. It would work great for FPS.

EDIT: Never mind, it only has 1 USB port.

JonnyBadfinger5995d ago

360 has 3 USB ports.

2 in front under flap and 1 at the back.

so do a little research first then.... i will listen to you.

And its funny but the 360 still exists without Blu-ray and it has HDMI, and I often ask myself"...how is this possible?".

Edit: I don't understand your comment Bun. Are you implying that I don't have a PS3?

Mr_Bun5996d ago (Edited 5996d ago )

You need a PS3 to use the PS3 browser

@Below:

"Sad that both of you failed th English language.."

Speaking of comprehension, maybe you can enlighten us by defining the word "th".

*FACEPALM*

Seferoth755996d ago

Sad that both of you failed th English language so badly you dont understand the concept of NEED. The only thing you need to play an xbox is power and a TV. HDMI is not NEEDED. Blu Ray isnt even an option for 360 and from the looks of most 3rd party games looking and playing better on xbox it doesnt seem to need a gimped single speed drive that requires every single game to have to be installed.

Look into what need actually means then come back and act like you know something. Sony fans are always the worst. They fail to comprehend even the basics but act like they know it all.

Double Toasted5996d ago

The only way I would look stupid is to continue a coversation with you...have a nice day.

Mr_Bun5996d ago

Are you implying that you do own a PS3 but the only 'gamertag' that you are proud to show off is your wii one?

I probably fed you my shotty in the UC2 demo...

The Wood5996d ago

'fed you my shotty'...lol

on topic, whether you use it or not isnt the point. Not everybody will use home, not everybody will use twitter or facebook but they can if they WANT to. No harm in having it as i use it to download FREE themes, surf, check sites when others are using the laptop the list goes on. You guys defend it cause you aint got it but you love to tell us about 'options and the option to' ¬_¬

Eamon5996d ago

bubbles for Double Toasted for making me crack up over "I probably fed you my shotty in the UC2 demo..."

Yeah, that demo was friggin amazing. Can't wait for the full game!!!
DB, don't bother with fanboys who stick with one console. Real gamers benefit from both! =D The fact retards like Insomnia and Mr Bun have sooo many bubbles really does show who make the majority of the community here at N4G.

@apena: There are HDMI in 360s though... My Elite and HDMI cable proves that XD
@Mr Bun: I'm sorry to interrupt and Imma let you finish but I gotta say that Double Toasted really did nail you there with the shotgun joke. But don't let it bother you and carry on.

willie62895996d ago

@above,
i think apena was referencing the fact that in the beginning, after it was announced that the PS3 would have HDMI, MS had said that HDMI was not needed. Then they did an about face and added HDMI to the console.
