Windows 7 Performance Tests

PC World: "Windows Vista never was particularly speedy in most people's eyes. Whether it deserved the reputation or not, the word on the street was that Vista was both slow and bloated.

Given that, it's no wonder that improving performance was one of Microsoft's design goals with Windows 7. Many reviewers have said that the new operating system feels faster than Vista. In our extensive PC World Test Center evaluations comparing the two, we found an increase in speed, though the overall improvement wasn't dramatic."

Yeah, this is pretty accurate, it won't capture the core XP users but it should initiate a switch for Vista users, which should be mandatory lol.

*Here come the disagrees from fanboys dun dun dunn!*

v1c1ous6127d ago

has proven to be decent after the first few updates.

the problem with vista is that the initial onslaught of problems and bad news have given it a horrible image and is basically a public relations nightmare.

Vista is good NOW, but people's notion of vista is not a friendly one.

Windows 7 is basically microsoft's relaunch of the windows OS, sorta like how the ps3 slim re-sparked the playstation image.

Major_Tom6127d ago (Edited 6127d ago )

With the launch of Windows 7 however there is no real reason to stick to Vista.

and Vista still isn't that great, after many updates. To be blunt, Windows itself is okay for the normal user but in the eyes of many advanced users Windows isn't that great to begin with but then again, there's no real competitors except for Linux which Microsoft shoots down every single chance.

Nitrowolf26127d ago

man i like window 7, its allot better then Vista and to me feels like it runs like XP

Kushan6127d ago

When XP first came out, it got quite a beating from the "core" windows 98 crowd. It used a bit more memory and performance wasn't quite as good, but as time went on that performance difference became less and less pronounced (64Mb of Memory is absolutely nothing these days and 100Mhz off your processor isn't that noticeable either).
The benefits of using XP - greater stability, better features, eventually outweighed the minor performance dip. XP to 7 will be the same deal, even right now if you have more than a couple of GB of RAM and a dual/quad-core processor, chances are you wont notice a big performance difference and the benefits of using 7 will be very apparent.

Major_Tom6127d ago (Edited 6127d ago )

That's naive thinking that the XP crowd will upgrade to Windows 7.

Besides did you actually read the article?

DJ6127d ago

I lost a lot of criticial documents and files on Vista, simply because they randomly disappeared. And i know many people who've reported this Vista issue.

Blaze9296127d ago

I'm a core XP user and part of that "XP Crowd"...but Windows 7 captured me in as soon as the beta went public. So your logic isnt too...correct so to speak.

Major_Tom6127d ago (Edited 6127d ago )

Um, cool you're a percentage, there's still so many XP users out there that it's mind boggling.

People should actually read the article instead of saying "but it feels faster". If you're using a low end computer your not going to get much of a performance increase probably entirely negligible.

As it stands there's no incentives to upgrade. I'm running W7x64 16385 RTM because I have more than 4gigs of ram, because I like to game however when I don't need to I dualboot onto ubuntu. The same people said the same thing, that the Xp users will eventually upgrade to Vista and all that jibber-jabber.

"The verdict? Windows 7 makes some performance strides over Vista, though in some cases we saw no clear-cut winner, and in one area Windows 7 lagged considerably behind its predecessor." - Nick Mediati, PC World

People like to trick themselves without ever doing any considerable amount of research.

Anon19746127d ago

So far, aside from a few quirks, I'm loving it. I think it rivals my old copy of XP for speed. I know it boots into window faster then XP ever did for me, but I'm pretty sure performance inside Windows is better as well. It's certainly isn't any worse for me. Microsoft hit it out of the park this time, in my opinion.

ShabzS6127d ago (Edited 6127d ago )

we have opperating system fanboys too ? craazy

from what i've read windows 7 is pretty awesome ... and come on who isn't excited about dx 11 huh ?

badz1496127d ago

directx 11! that's the thing about upgrading! like when it was with Vista, the only clear advantage was the dx10 but you'll not magically get dx10 upgrading from XP to Vista before you buy dx10-capable gfx card! now, 7 will come with dx11 and again, eventhough not mandatory but for those who want to enjoy dx11, there's no other way but to buy a new dx11-capable gfx card! and that's only for serious gamers which are not the majority of users! for casual users, what are there for them that making upgrading essential? Vista SP2 is as good as it can get and I can say that it's stable and decently good! I'm also a PC gamer myself and with my setup, I think I'll stay with vista for a foreseeable time because it's working and I think most of the people with vista will do the same for their machines! hell even XP is still widely used and sold especially with all netbooks! M$ will have a hard time convincing people to upgrade but lucky them they have the PC and laptop market pretty much locked where they will force every new system loaded with 7! heck, that was the only reason vista was selling like it is!

"feels faster than Vista" not really saying much there.

darkecho6127d ago

I disagree. I think that Windows 7 is microsoft's relaunch of Vista, which was a necessity due to the onslaught of crap that it experienced during launch. They were losing money; no one wanted to switch from XP to Vista. So what do they do? They strip it down, take out some stupid resource intensive services that shouldn't have been there in the first place, make some minor optimizations, skin it, and bam! New OS = New cash cow.

Kushan6127d ago

7 isn't "stripped down" at all. It has all the same features as Vista.

dragonelite6127d ago

Vista was a new architect so most hardware companies didnt had compatible drivers or good working driver. Im now using vista already 1,5 year never in that time i got a BSOD. But yeah i like reinstalling windows every 4 months.

KingKionic 6127d ago

I just found out today that dreamscene wont be in windows 7 .

That really sucks .

I must be late ...i didn't even know this .

Pizza6127d ago

I agree with darkecho. I have vista 64 and I don't see any urgent reason to switch to W7. For games, DX11 will come to Vista too, see the reviews from Guru3d, there is no difference for gaming performance between W7 and Vista. VIsta 64 is fine for me.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio72d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing72d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9272d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit72d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing72d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9271d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
