GPU-Accelerated Flash Player Provides Smooth HD Video, Arrives Next Month

At last, here's a GPU-accelerated Flash player. Nvidia has been demonstrating builds of the GPU-accelerated Flash player around, and it's making an announcement on October 5. According to those who have seen it, it provides ultra-smooth high definition video playback, even on portable Tegra platforms.

This is great but is Nvidia going to pursue those anti-competitive tactics again and lock out ATi users?

Kakkoii6089d ago

If it's running through CUDA, then yes. But ATI isn't locking out ATI. ATI is locking themselves out. They choose not to allow CUDA to run on their GPU's. They refuse. Even though it wouldn't take much work to get running.

Major_Tom6089d ago (Edited 6089d ago )

That's architecture though and it's proprietary. It would also be AMD's call because they run the equivalent: firestream.

Kakkoii6089d ago

The architecture side of CUDA on Nvidia GPU's is merely changes that allow Nvidia's shaders to run CUDA faster than ATI's shaders would be able to. ATI could still run it without architecture changes, just not as fast.

Major_Tom6089d ago

Sounds easily solved with an update but I still think Nvidia might try those same strategies again even though it would be bottle necking progress.

ia_studio6089d ago

For me this means Next-Gen Flash games aroun the corner in FullHD :D

Kushan6089d ago

CUDA is specific to nvidia cards, ATI has their own GPGPU software called "Stream", it just so happens that nVidias was more popular, for one reason or another. Shaders are the same deal, both ATI and nVidia have their own shader language specific to their hardware. However, there exists intermediate shader languages that run on both (Such as DirectX Shaders and OpenGL shaders) and GPGPU is the same. DirectX has "DirectCompute" and there is also "OpenCL" which is similar to OpenGL in that it's an open standard and adaptable to other platforms.

I have NO idea what Adobe is using, though but they have options to allow it to run on both sets of hardware.

even on portable Tegra platforms.

jeez they really are tryin to get me to buy a zune hd...I don't know how much longer I can resist

FantasyStar6089d ago

Like USB, the only way to get as successful concept out to the consumers is to compromise and standardize. Nvidia should share their CUDA tech with AMD-ATI so that both companies and bring out a standardized GPGPU. Both sides want it, but neither are willing to compromise.

Just look at what happened to Intel, when AMD threatened to develop their own USB 3.0 standard because Intel was holding out. Now Intel is Nvidia and AMD is still AMD.

Can't we all be friends? This backroom politics is only hurting the consumers.

the irony that the example video is from youtube :')

ArmrdChaos6089d ago

Sounds like this would also be compatible with the new Zune HD then...curious to see how that ends up looking.

Kakkoii6089d ago

Yep, from what they said the Zune is able to play 1080p Flash video using it's GPU without a problem.

Major_Tom6089d ago

Except that Zune HD can't play flash, especially with IE6 LOL.

Kakkoii6089d ago

Yeah. Microsoft is most likely working hard to port IE 7 or 8 to the Zune. I wish you could just install Firefox mobile on it though lol.

Kushan6089d ago

I'm sure someone will jailbreak the damn thing and port Firefox.

The video has been taken down.. Anyone got a mirror link?

I wanna' see it!

Kushan6089d ago

All you'll see is a trailer for Star Trek running smoothly. Is it really that hard to imagine?

Tanny922256089d ago

This will be a god-send for my old computer! I use it most because its more convenient and has xp. But it only has a 3ghz p4 and 9500gt so it fails at playing hd flash videos.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing32d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9232d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit32d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing32d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9232d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
