Top 5 Most Successful Graphic Engines

Brutal Gamer: "Graphics are an important part of a video game, because no matter how good the gameplay is and how deep the storyline is, it's better if it looks good too. But many of the developers don't start developing a game by creating their own engine because it takes more times and of course, why would you waste time with originality when someone else did a good graphic engine and they're selling it? Throughout the gaming history, some graphic engines became quite famous, being used for a lot of first class games. But which ones are the most successful? Keep reading to find out."

this must be some kind of joke.

Ninji6084d ago

It's talking about successful graphic engines, not good ones.

yeah ... no doubt ... you can't question the success of games that have been released through the source engine with hl 2, l4d, tf 2 and portal... not a fan of cs source though... 1.6 is still the sh*t

but in terms of large scale success the unreal engine really has it made... some crazy ammount of games have come through it... all the way from shovelware to some real triple A stuff

evrfighter6084d ago

Source and Unreal3 engine are probably the most loved and hated engines ever to be created. That's what makes something great.

54percent6084d ago

Successful yes, the best no

Uncharted engine is one of the best on consoles, cryengine on PC

EpicGamerSwordsman6084d ago

Source & UE3, but Unreal engine is over used.... ALOT!

randomwiz6083d ago

I think this article is talking about engine's that are distributed, like cryengine3, unreal engine, etc

One reason is the fact that the Quake engines are nowhere on the list. They stand far and above the Aurora engine as influential tech.

John Carmack's Quake engine was the very foundation for Half Life.

Although Quake II supported D3D, it was Carmack's OpenGL programming that was legendary. One of two great APIs ruined by Microsoft's infuence.

darkequitus6084d ago

The is list is pretty much accurate is terms of success.

Hey Bubbles I'm 100% sure you misread the tittle lol. I too misread it thinking they were talking about the best looking engines but after I read it I realized they were talking about the most successful.

evrfighter6084d ago

"One of two great APIs ruined by Microsoft's infuence."

Microsoft's influence or Carmacks greed.

Tehdaza6084d ago

I'm pretty sure that Gabe Newell was the one who brought the Quake II engine to D3D.

morganfell6084d ago

Microsoft's influence. They killed Open GL and they were the major driving force behind the group that killed Glide. Both were superior tech to D3D. MS was hell bent on ramming Direct X down everyone's throat.

pippoppow6084d ago

May be a major reason why PC gaming seemed to drop off after the amazing 90s once D3D took precedence. Back then Glide and OpenGL unlocked the graphical capabilities to the fullest. Too bad Nvidia bought out 3Dfx, they were something special.

The global economic crisis, Iran with nukes, ww1, ww2, global warming, and every other major problem with the world can be laid at Microsofts feet. Dude, you really need a hug. I guess at sometime Microsoft did you wrong bro. Please, could you just please refrain from making every single article on this site a microsoft bashfest. If you hate them, then great, don't buy their products or play their games, but STFU its getting so old. You sound like some old hag that complaines about her husband that left her 30 years ago and now hates all men.

morganfell6084d ago

Typical that mentally disarmed people result to using STFU when facts are the last thing they understand. What a laugh fest. Or a cry fest if you are the person resorting to such a indefensible fall back position.

Projekt7tuning6083d ago

@ 3.7 Morganfell
Microsoft did not kill glide. It was 3dfx's own fault for the failure of glide. It was first proprietary. 2 It was emulated by nvidia with the TNT cards and it ran faster on them as well. 3 It did not do 2d acceleration so you had to rely on pass through 2d. Nvidia could do both. 3dfx forced nvidia to stop using glide drivers. Open gl was done on all the other brand cards natively as well as d3d, and done better. 3DFX did not want to continue to evolve. ATI and Nvidia killed 3dfx not Microsoft. You may as well blame apple it makes as much sense as your argument. Morganfell did you get touched by Microsoft in a no no place when you were young?

IcarusOne6083d ago

@ Projekt7

Well said. Nice rebuttal.

@ MF

Typical that mentally disarmed people have nothing to say when faced with an intelligent counter-argument.

EasySMX D05 review

You can get Hall effect controllers slightly cheaper, but you'd struggle to find as feature-rich a package without some heavy, heavy sales.
