Resident Evil 5 played using Motion Controller on TGS 09

PS3-Sense writes: It's pretty obvious that there will be some news about the Motion Controller coming from the Tokyo GameShow 2009. Today a new video showing the controller in combination with Resident Evil 5 scratches the surface. We can't translate all the Japanese language, but the video most likely speaks for itself.

I've been thinkingabout this a lot overnight and no matter how I do it I can't see how using the DS works very well. My kids just can't manage it in one hand and as a lefty it isn't any good for me(I hold a Wii nunchuck in my right hand)-even my right handed wife thinks it's a bad idea.

So unless there's going to be an analogue stick holding peripgeral then this seems dead to me when Wii has simply a better pair of controllers=-no matter how coold the wand is it cvannot cover the drawbacks of using the DS in one hand-so why no prototype for this role?

I imagine a deal could easily be done with the makers of the Frag FX or similar to do the job(maybe that would even work using the analogue stick half of that but it would be pretty dear)so I just hope Sony are listening to the many fans who see this as a paoblem and sort it out otherwise all their R&D will be a waste. If Ninty can manage to get it right I'm sure MS will and Sony have to know this isn't the answer even if the savings are attractive. It would leave theirs as the most unfriendly to new gamers and therefore likely to fail when the core gamer is usually not even interested in MC.

Honestly, does anyone know if Sony are fixing this? At the minute it just looks amateur and feels rubbish.

I think using the DS will be an option and that there will be an attachment offered.

wUTTer6073d ago (Edited 6073d ago )

Yea I think Sony's aware that holding a DS with one hand is a little inconvenient while using the joystick.

I think they just had to get the motion stick finished before they molded together the joystick controller.

They probably already have it being made by now.

The joystick piece is a minor obstacle since it's basically half a DS which should be a piece of cake to throw together.

sinncross6073d ago

'as a lefty it isn't any good for me(I hold a Wii nunchuck in my right hand)'

So you're telling mer that devs aren't smart enough to include a control option where you just switch the controls around?

Of course they will. The motion control can beu used in any hand and the DS is pretty much symmetrical save for the dpad and face buttons, but even they are is roughly the same positions.

I dont think this is the final design and it wont be the final controller setup for games either.

Sony have already made a point that some games only require a single 'wand' while others will need two of them. Considering the controllers can ascertain depth, you could two in replacement of the analogs.
As such:

if the left analogue is used for movement and sidestepping, then the left 'wand' could do the same merely by pointing it forwards, backwards and turning sideways: all involving merely wrist movement at the least. The right analogue can be used as a pointer for camera control.

Include the buttons on the controller and two 'wands' could easily for for any game type if there are enough buttons on the 'wands' that are. But general movement ain't difficult. I just think the DS3 approach is to devs something that allows for easy wii - ps3 ports.

They should bring back and support the GunCon 3, it's got both R and L analog sticks on it too! At least it'll work perfectly for this RE5 concept.
It's a shame that the only game that supports it was Time Crisis 4.
Here's a pic of GunCon3:

leeger6073d ago

i dont like how they presented the motion controller! holding the DS3 with one hand! FAIL!

Jamegohanssj56073d ago

I wished that they gave us that black gun con instead of the orange one for TC4. In fact I still need to beat TC4.

This is what I've been waiting for. Always wanted to play RE5 with its nice graphics with the Wiimote like controls. Those that played RE4 on the Wii should know that this is best way play Resident Evil. Way better than traditional controllers. Okay with that said, the demonstration was nice and all but Sony needs to design a separate joystick like the Wiimote. Looks pretty awkward holding a controller with one hand like that. Maybe new DS3 controllers will be detachable into two like rumored?

Bodyboarder_VGamer6072d ago (Edited 6072d ago )

The breakable controller idea it's sounding great right now!!! Sony needs to cut the DS3 in half. If not, many people will be suffering of cramps thanks to this awful set up.

mastiffchild6072d ago

Well, sincross, you kind of missed why I'm worried anout this. Right, the wands are still prototype, yes? So if they just havenm't finished the other periopheral why no proto of that? Why no talk of one ever either?

I've heard mention of the patent they filed for a splittable DS3 which would be a cool idea for this, no?

The other thing is this was at TGS, the world was watching and whether you think I'm being silly or not using the DS3 like that looked amateur and sloppy. Looks are a very big part of things and it didn't look great, did it?

I'd be happy if they at least said it was coming but there's nothing to suggest it is yet. Even at E3 they didn't have anything like it and when they did go ywo handed it was with two wands-does this mean there might be plans for an analog stick solution with glowing bulb AND accelerometers etc? Again, if there is aren't they leaving this a bit late?

Mainly, though, it's the lack of any word or prototype which makes me think they may be rushing or haven't answered it themselves yet. Whatever anyone says it IS odd to use the DS3 like this at a trade show and I mentioned the left hand /right hand thing because one company already does it to me with their pad(MA and the 360 pad)which I would like better in a mirror image so is it that far from possibility that Sony have overlooked it too? I too find it unbelievavle that Sony would use this as a final solution but I also find it hard to fathom why they didn't have anything lese ready to show the world as what they did show was brought down by the guy using a DS in one hand.

This is kind of a lame video. It doesn't really show the controller doing anything the Wii hasn't already done with RE4.

wUTTer6073d ago (Edited 6073d ago )

I don't think motion control for the PS3 is meant to do anything Nintendo hasn't done already.

The point of motion control for the PS3, is that they are bringing the same thing the Wii has, to gamers on our console.

Bob Dole6073d ago

Well it should if you need the camera AND controller.

coolfool6073d ago

it allows the controller to be tracked in 3d space. this can't be done on the wii controller. Admittedly though, this particular example doesn't show that off.

Christopher6073d ago

The precision of the reticle is better than even Wii Motion+. But, having said that, they need to have something else other than another PS3 DualShock controller for movement. That looked really cumbersome.

wUTTer6073d ago (Edited 6073d ago )

The camera brings other features to the PS3 not just motion control.

It can detect facial features for face detection, which can be used for head tracking.

Even though it may not seem like motion detection on the PS3 is any different than the Wii's, there's a few things different that the camera allows you to do.

If you watch the videos, you can see on screen that the camera detects the controller in depth, meaning the closer you get to the camera the further you reach into the 3D world.

bobdole - actually it will provide true 1:1 motion control something which not even wii-motion plus offers.

NecrumSlavery6073d ago

the way this thing work will really improve next gen shooters the way the Wii fails to do. i do hope the make a bluetooth nunchuck-like controller though, it would suck to have to hold a controller. the sixaxis is light but the Dualshock is heavier to hold. I hope it comes to Killzone 2/MW2 in a patch when it comes out. Natal is neat and all, but i love that the way the controller works can actually put a 3D object in your hand on video and have truest 1:1 possible. this will suit better. natal seems to work best with party games and racers. i hope they improve the look of this and call it the DildoShocker!

Capcom's willingness to invest in experiments and scrap them sets them apart form many other developers (Nintendo have a similar methodology). Far too often companies push a game setting or game mechanic that is just not that good and the final product is middling or poor.

I mean 0, 1 and Code Veronica should be way before we get into 5 or 6.

Darkseeker112d ago

5 and 6 are so bad that even Capcom want to pretend they don't exist.

Levii_92112d ago

Dude Code Veronica is bad too but RE5 and 6 were mega successful and to me it makes much more sense for Capcom to do them instead. Nobody cares about Code Veronica except niche fixed camera era RE fans, i bet most modern RE fans probably don't know Code Veronica even exists. Based on all that i don't believe CV remake is coming but we will see i guess.

MehmetAlperTR112d ago (Edited 112d ago )

Actually RE5-6 was not Classic RE game.. They are not even Survival Horror game.. They are just an action game with coop and named by RE... And for me RE Code Veronica was masterpiece.. I remembered the first time i played it in Dreamcast.. It was absouletly excellent game. And specially for RE6.. I was quit from game after the camera shakes when Leon's kick to zombies.. There's a video about RE6 and they are telling the truth about that shitty game https://www.youtube.com/wat... here it is.. Enjoy it..

Neonridr112d ago

people are DYING for a Code Veronica Remake. Not sure who you are talking to, but the die-hard RE fans of the series are very familiar with every entry. That's what it means to be called a die-hard fan.

neutralgamer1992112d ago

Levii

I am sure If they were to remake CV that it 2ont have fixed camera angle. I hope whatever they do they take their time like RE2/4 remakes and not rushed with cut content like RE3 remake

Before they should do RE5 they should go back and remake earlier games. In a perfect scenario we would get CV and RE/Zero before RE5/6

Tapani112d ago

It makes more sense for them to remake earlier games like Code Veronica. RE5 is a good game though - it's not THAT different from RE4.

RE5 just doesn't really need to remade in general. The co-op element makes it tricky - you'd probably add more moments where Chris is by himself enhance the horror but some would want co-op to stay.

thesoftware730112d ago

RE:5 Was and still is a great game, with hands down the best Merc mode, that I still play from time to time with my brother.

RE:6 blah, I agree, it was awful.

Redgrave112d ago

Other than Code Veronica, 6 is the one ai want to see remade the most only because pretty much everything has to be redone; can't streamline that hot mess.

DarXyde112d ago

6 was pretty bad. 5 just tried too hard in being an action-oriented RE4.

In some fairness to Capcom, 5 was the first Resident Evil on then-new hardware for them (X360 and PS3). And it was pretty damn hard to follow up RE4.

Imagine everyone's surprise when EA of all companies dropped Dead Space.

Alos88112d ago

The first half of 5 wouldn't be too hard to do in the more grounded style the remakes have gone for, but the second half gets pretty silly and uncomfortable at parts.
6 is a wash. You'd have to basically make a whole new game to salvage that one at this point.

__y2jb111d ago

6 is garbage. 5 is excellent.

Hopefully if and when they do a RE5 remake, they give it the RE3 remake treatment, because this is certainly one title that I don't want a faithful remake of.
