I would BET that the people that are discriminated against WOULD have a problem with it. Racism DOES indeed exist "on many sides from many different types". However, just because it happens to you, or me, or anyone else means that we should just quit talking about it. I for one believe that the reason that it is SO rampant is because that is the way it has been dealt with FOREVER. We don't, as a society, have REAL discussion about racism. It seems to be impolite and not en vogue to even mention when something is considered to be racist. We should ALL care if something or someone is RACIST...because when we DON'T it keeps spreading like the silent cancer that it already is. You can't see it...sometimes you don't know it is there...then up pops a tumor. What happens when you ignore a tumor....it SPREADS like wildfire.

A black person worked on finding and adding words for this game. I'm sure that person had every chance in the world to step up and say "This term may offend some people." Wonder why they didn't...

And you don't need to talk about racism to get rid of it. Talking about racism is how it's born, you know.

People don't just randomly use terms like "n****r." They learn it from places. And this isn't a tumor. If you ignore it and don't think about it, then HEY YOU'RE NOT REALLY A RACIST NOW ARE YOU! I respect your perspective, but I strongly disagree with it, to be completely clear.

On one hand they probably didn't mean any harm, but on the other it's a little disappointing that they being Americans don't recognize their own history. Do schools not really teach black history for that one month a year anymore?

The situation could have easily been avoided with a little foreknowledge.

Notice I didn't just say "TALK"...I said have REAL discussion. People are so quick to dismiss, excuse, or ignore racist comments as accidental...oops my bad...What I am saying is that a real NATIONAL dialogue must take place so that there is a complete understanding about race in America. I agree...this was a simple mistake. However, just because it was an accident doesn't preclude someone for being a bit upset that a term like "SAMBO" could be added to a game.

Also...I never called anyone a racist for ignoring racism...I simply said that ignoring racism allows it to fester and become epidemic in it's usage...like the word that you mentioned. You have EVERY right to IGNORE it and don't think about it...but that doesn't really make the problem go away.

Ignorance is the KEY to racism...from ALL sides...the only way to combat ignorance is knowledge. This knowledge will only result from true...unabashed...honest...an d CIVIL dialogue. I ALSO respect your opinion...but I must agree to disagree with your assertions.

Sadly African American history...in a LOT of schools...Starts with slavery...they are released...and then they show up again in the form of Martin Luther King, Jr. I am a teacher in an inner city high school and I have seen the sad excuse for books that are meant to teach African American History.

im so sick of the liberal EVERYONE needs to be fair attitude. that is what has made america a country of politically correct man babies. time to grow up and not let petty things such as racial slurs bother ANYONE white, black, red, brown, orange, WHATEVER. ignore the minority or racist people out there and sooner or later they get tired and go away.

prime example are when special interest groups boycott things they deem inappropriate for the entire population, they dont represent the entire population so eventually they get tired w/o anyone's support but their own and go home.

grow up everyone and stop making something out of nothing which is always the case.

This is disgraceful, I was sitting around writing racial slurs into Scribblenauts and a fruit appeared. This is almost as bad as that time I was shouting racial slurs over an Xbox live headset and it didn't automatically mute me. These awful awful racists should be ashamed of themselves, filthy scum. I bet they're all Indian too.

Well the game is international, and I'm sure the developers wanted to incorporate a healthy diversity of international words.

I mean, there are 22,802 words in the game. Google the list and note how much the words vary.

When it is brought up in a way like this. I call this doing the Chapelle. You bring up racism in a context of comedy or even serious journalistic writing,and you only add flame to the fuel.This is not mature reporting, or anything like that, it is useless to make an issue out of nothing. If you typed in cracker and a white dude popped up I would laugh my a** off! Because unlike most im not hyper-sensitized over such things unlike the masses are.

Just remember that racism exists because of a power element. The word cracker is insensitive and racist. However, the impact of the word is extremely reduced because of the element of perceived power. Thus, why it is easy to laugh it off. The fact is that it is easier to compile a page long list of racial slurs against ethnic backgrounds that are not Caucasian than to think of more than 5-10 that are. Hypersensitivity exists because of constant and intense stimulation. (physiologically and psychologically). Therefore, if one IS oversensitive (which I don't think MOST are...including myself), then it is the result of constant stimulus....
The use of SAMBO in the game IS most likely pure happenstance. The fact that someone at Kotoku took the time to put the word into the game for "sh!ts and giggles" is ridiculous. That being said...to ignore the perception of racism does NOT help an issue that still is present in America. To report in a responsible manner or even JOKE about it might bring it to light...and yeah...there might be a few fires stoked under this cause. But, I would rather have a few spot fires that could be put out...then an electrical fire that hides in the walls until it finds that sweet spot in the architecture to burst forth into an inferno.

That my friend is the classic case of ignorance is bliss. That is NOT meant disrespectfully, I might add, as ignorance is purely the lack of a certain type of knowledge. The fact that you don't know about the history of the word means that you don't have to react when it is being used. But, then again as GI JOE would say..."now you know...and knowing is half of the battle!"

I agree that racism exists in America and should be discussed in an open and mature fashion. For example:not only is "cracker" a racist term, but that same "perceived power" you refer to is racist as well.

I will make one comment about public racist terms. Imagine the outrage today if a National sports team had the name of the "New York Degos" with a gangster as a logo or the "San Francisco squintys" with a smiling, very ASIAN lookinh person and That would be utterly racist and ridiculous, right?

Now look at: Washington REDskins (and a profile of a Native American, or the Atlanta BRAVES (tomahawk) or Cleveland Indians (exaggerated Indian)? Yet all these are accepted terms in American society everyday

I agree with you that racism NEEDS to be addressed but it is a discussion for another place and time. The issue here is that people LOOK to find racist issues in places they are not. Only in America (and I am born and bred here--and proud to be) is there this arrogance that we should set the standard for EVERYTHING. They dont realize there are other countries and people out there beside them. I mean, should the Homosexuals be offended by if you put in "f@g" (UK terM), a cigarette appeared? Or a "f@got" and a bundle of wood appeared?

I ALSO agree that there might have been some idiot who get's his rocks off by finding a racial slur in an innocent game. I was more reacting to the statement "its a joke most people who talk about it at this point are the ones who are and thats why they have problems with it" that was in the first post than anything else.
I was born in America...raised here for 10 years....then lived in Japan, Greece, and Germany until I graduated high school. (military brat) If anybody can see the cultural arrogance of an American it is me.
I REALLY was not looking to pick a fight or start an argument. It was one man's opinion on racism in general and how a person COULD be a bit miffed when first reading and seeing this. NO more...and No less. Much respect!!!
