It depends how long the consoles last. The ps3 will be around long after the wii and 360 for sure but long enough after to pass the wii sales? that remains to be seen. It's a possibly since the playstation brand is very popular. 360 has had it's best time already only because the ps3 was too expensive. But realistically, with ps3 sales eventually stabilising, we'll see a return to normal growth ratios and the sales gap will close only slowly - that's assuming MS doesn't counter unexpectedly with another price cut and natal goodness and outstrip the ps3 again in 6-12 months time.

Remember it has to cover an additional 7.7 million units just to be even!

So, I am predicting, that IFF the ps3 catches up it will be in 2012.
On average, this means the ps3 has to OUTSELL the 360 by 60000+ units EVERY single week... no small task, i can assure you.

By that stage, the 360 will have been out 7 years, Natal games will be out and the 360 will have probably had 2 additional pricedrops.

I would suggest that further 360 price drops will ALSO have an impact on sales, while the effect of Natal will remain to be seen. Of course it has potential to be quite huge, but let's not count the chickens before they hatch.

Given theses facts, then, it seems rather dubious that the ps3 will be able to produce the required average, in the long term.

It can happen, sales for PS3 Slim an what is making it sale more an new great titles coming out, well that should help even more. Wii had its run but the way I see it, everyone by now that wanted a Wii should have one and those who don't yet will end up getting one.

360 had a early start an that means they might be the first to fall behind, coming out first has its ups and downs, like Wii has it ups and downs. All in all, only time can tell.

Last time i checked that where no prices to win in this made up war, neither does it look like there will be any looser. Actually this gen seems to be full of winners. There is no Dreamcast scenario this time, neither a Gamecube one. All current gen consoles have decent sales and they don't even fight for the same interest groups for large parts.

they need to keep releasing good exclusives and 3rd party games, good advertising, and contiously do that on a regular basis and dont stop

3D being implemented next year,free online service which is constantly growing,true 1:1 motion controller,Blu-Ray,the overal value and whatnot. Not to mention the fact that we´re talking about the Sony brand and its focus on the 10 years lifecylce. I´m definitely confident that the PS3 will win over the 360 on the long run.

ps1 cut into the market.ps2 solidified it.psp cut into nintendo's monopoly on the handheld market.bluray won the war in a very short time against hd-dvd.cell processor does everything from games to science.and does it well.ps3 with all its built in features is now the console with the most value.

for $249,you get a wii.for $299,you get an elite.for $299,you get a ps3.one has more options and features built in compared to the others.you may not NEED it.but it's there if you NEED it.

but sony's overall goal is selling 10 million consoles a year on average for 10 years of production.and they succeeded with every console and portable released.that's what gives them the 100 million each time in 10 years.

when you keep this in mind,you can see that sony is succeeding in what they do.and have a better chance of outlasting their competitors.

The PS3 was gaining ground all of last year until the 360 price cut. The same thing will happen this year but more so since the slim is out. And if Gran Turismo 5 comes out this year, it will be even more.

I think that if the Slim keeps on selling well and if Sony keep on releasing high quality games like Killzone 2 and Uncharted then eventually we will pass the 360.

So if its being judged by sales, then no the PS3 cannot, The Wii will have the most sales.

Yes, sony has already won in fact.

They've gained assurance in themselves that they can crack the gaming market with there second console,made a healthy sized fanbase and are able to build up on it next generation if they make the right decisions.
One thing I don't think people have clicked onto yet is the next Xbox will sell alongside the PS3 and the average gaming consumer is going to see it as the rival to the PS3 with all great new techology and a shiny new face.
This isn't to say the 360 didn't do well,but if you ask the average person of a population who has the slightest bit of insight into gaming (and quiet a few who haven't) they see PS3 as the "new best thing to have" and Xbox is showing it's age on the public's eye. Could very well be different with the next if Microsoft tout there next console as the new advanced kid on the block.

why is everyone so wrapped up in who wins the console war theyre is no real winner. its not like the hd dvd vs blu ray war that had to have a winner cuz it was an inconvience. the thing is if theyre was only one console theyre would be no competition which then would lead to no price drops and theyre would be inflated prices on everything and maybe they wouldnt of pushed out amaziing exclusives like uncharted 2 or splinter cell conviction. let microsoft and sony battle for fist place, and we can just reep the benifits like price cuts, exclusive games that rock your socks off, new slim consoles upates that improve each console.....you are all wasting your time argueing whos gunna win it doesnt matter to us. all that matters is what we can get out of it. so enjoy it. argue over who has the better quality console or better games but arguing over whos gunna win a war thats not even our problem in the first place is just stupid and silly.

The thing is that they do still have the chance. From the look of things, a lot of people were waiting for the price to come down before they committed to the system. Not saying that the system was doing badly without it, but right now, since the price drop and the subsequent Slim form factor hitting the mainstream knowledge, there are a lot of people who are buying it, and you can probably expect for Sony's "reboot" of the PS3 to have a lot going for it right now.

Remember when Sony said 2008 was the "Year of the PS3". Looks like they were just saying that one year too early, because 09 seems to be their year.

MS have a big ace, the golden unicorn which up in till now has been left to only a few dev's to play with and that is The direct x 11 api tessellation effects it has been put into all Ati cards its code name is C1, but you want to know why it has not been used in any 3rd party games because no Nvidia card can do it, only the latest gtx can do it I here you say what does it mean to us, well the ps3 cant do tessellation effects and it can't do shader model 5 ether, this is were it gets really good, unreal 3 engine has never used a single dim of C1 nor has it used any api hire then dx shader model 3, with the 360 gpu being able to support shader model 3+/5 api from raw gpu machine code, this leaves poor cell having to use 2 or even 4 spe's to emulate the effects, were 360 can do it in hardware, what does this mean, well with all xbox360 dev kits now supporting Dx11 api instruction sets, they can now build supper complex characters, geometry, and ultra detailed textures while using less polygons, and the process is also cut down dramatically as well, when will we see these improvements soon very soon, But they will not be easy to do with 3rd party games, because ps3 will have a hard time trying to emulate these effects, so games from Ms and first party support studios will be epic,

PS3 had already won (in terms of games). Many people just can not accept it yet (in terms of sales). But they will accept it in about one year, when the PS3 finally outsells the 360.

I sitting here, wondering why the heck isn't God of War 3, Heavy Rain, GT5, and MAG are not out yet. I am not a big Halo guy, but it's dominance is no joke! Halo: ODST will sell over 9 million Plus copies. Meanwhile, Sony is bragging about it's Blu Ray player, free online, and Wifi...AND I'M SICK OF IT! And thanks for the GoW 1 and 2 Blu Ray/PS3 release......ONLY 3 YEARS AFTER THE PS3 HAS ALREADY BEEN OUT! (These guys at Sony are running on a couple cans short of a 6 pack.)

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
