Halo Would Not Be The Same Without Bungie

DCI shares his opinions about the longevity of the Halo franchise, and how the possibility of Bungie going multi-platform could effect the Halo games created after Reach.

"Any studio making Halo 4 will have to fill some pretty big shoes. It can be done, but unfortunately Microsoft doesn't have any 1st party studios up to the task. Would you play a Halo game created by Rare? Would you trust a new studio to get the job done, or do you think an established studio would try to tackle a Halo project for Microsoft? Halo also has branched out beyond games. I believe that if the Halo: Legends anime does well, it is quite possible that you might see more multimedia projects then games being released."

NOBODY should be given the task of making or continuing the Halo story but Bungie. If Bungie want to explore other possibilities, then let them. Let Halo sleep for a couple of years 5 to 10 years(master chiefs in a cryo-pod, so everything will be ok).

Come back to Halo when they feel like they have the ultimate Halo story. I personally would hate to see Halo turn into CoD and be chucked back and forth between 2 studios.

I dont think anyone would disagree with me on this, because it applies to all legendary franchises. And it allows other potential games to shine, especially when they arent being compared to Halo.

Bring on Bungies next IP..... but preferably Reach first.

SuicidalTendencies6098d ago

^I take it you never beat Halo 3 on Legendary. Doesn't MS still own a large stake in Bungie? Would Sony or Nintendo let a game on their respected consoles that would still put money in MS pocket? I doubt it.

Zedux6098d ago (Edited 6098d ago )

Bungie definitely deserves a try for a PS3 exclusive new IP these guys are good see what they achieved with the old 360! Imagine what they can come out with with the Cell power/Blu-ray combination! At least they would give Guerrila Games a run for their money!

CharlesDCI6098d ago

@JohnnyBadfinger

Thank you for actually understanding what my article is all about. The story is getting lot of reports, and I can tell the reporters don't get my point, which I made clear in the article. Maybe they should use your comment as a reference. I don't even think they read it, which happens way to much on this site.

IronFistChinMi6098d ago (Edited 6098d ago )

MS setup 343 Studios, led by Frankie O'Connor recently, they should be more than capable. It will be interesting to see the Halo universe in fresh hands IMO.

Gabe EatsWell6098d ago

Microflop wouldn't be in the console war without FAIL-O.

GrandDragon6098d ago

Very very true

Halo as a Exclusive game franchise was the ONLY REAL incentive people had to purchase the Xbox 360 and Microsoft realising this had to regurgitate and reuse the same Game several times over in a span of 3 years to sell well.

American consumers brought in to the Hype and Marketing schemes that dominated the Streets and the Internet

TheEqualizer6098d ago

Halo would not be the same...wait theyre always the same.

LukaX236098d ago

Without Bungie, there wouldn't be a Halo. Without Microsoft, there wouldn't be Windows. Sorry, but that's a dumb title.

Hellsvacancy6098d ago (Edited 6098d ago )

And it it wasnt 4 Halo, there wouldnt b the 360

Omega46098d ago

The new Halo team has the creator of Halo as their leader along with a bunch of other high class devs so Halo will be Halo without Bungie, it could even surpass the original Bungie games.

MS probably didn't want the negative press for over a year about Halo coming to sony, which is why they didn't reveal it this year. IMO

InUrFoxHole347d ago (Edited 347d ago )

I dont think that's it. Gears coming to PS is a big deal and we already know that MS is bridging all games. I think its gonna be a next year reveal or when ever they reveal the new xbox. I tell you what's funny. At 1st all gamers were in arms about MS bringing games to PS. Hardcore xbox were mad. Hardcore sony were happy and some trolling. Admittedly at 1st I didn't like it. Truth is for years these companies have been training their consumers to have brand loyalty and believe that certain games were only possibly because of the company they were made under. When you turn that silliness off you realize as a consumer this is one of the best things to happen in gaming. You have the choice to play where you like.

slate91346d ago

Totally agree. MS lost the console war so they moved into publishing where there is money to be made. Now everyone can have the once-exclusive gems on their system of choice.

InUrFoxHole346d ago

@Slate91
Agreed. No way in hell MS is gonna catch anyone in console sales. They're gonna go where the money is.

Shiro173346d ago

Now you clearly have a choice. That would be playstation. You can get Xbox games and all Playstation only games. Why in the hell would anyone buy a Xbox over a ps or pc is beyond me now.

dveio346d ago (Edited 346d ago )

"When you turn that silliness off you realize as a consumer this is one of the best things to happen in gaming.“

Microsoft easily could have told anyone in 2020 already.

They already knew how their next 5 years would evolve, didn't they? In hindsight?

So people could at least have thought about it twice if they'd pay for an X or S - or instead just buy a PS5 right away.

What I am saying is:

Nice try.

But I personally won't ever buy into their "It's about choices to play/we want to reach everyone" BS.

All they care about is money.

Especially 1st party exclusives are a special and completely logical treatment for your own hardware to offer at least some unique selling points to people.

The problem for Microsoft was they just hadn't any. In 2020. And they didn't know it in 2020 first, no, no.

They had 7 years from 2013 to 2020 to prepare for the Series Generation. Which they did - but they didn't tell their community just yet.

And this is just cheap and gutless, now disguised as "We care for everyone!", and again held up by their very own community, at least parts of it.

Because the Xbox brand will have lost another 12-20'ish million users between Xbox One and X|S.

For reasons. Don't you think?

If Microsoft could have done the ways they wanted, e.g. leaked throughout the FTC trial, they just would have bought everything.

From Sega, CD Projekt Red, Capcom, From Software, Warner Bros.

To even Nintendo and Valve.

And don't forget: they had already bought Zenimax and ABK, and STILL wanted more!

Microsoft is a cancer in the gaming business. And I very much wonder how people still don't see through it!

InUrFoxHole346d ago

@devio
You're conflating 2 different things. There stance is absolutely 💯 play anywhere. You can't deny that. But what they are doing is separate from why they are doing it. If you think any of these companies do it for any reason other than $, then you are fooled. MS hand was forced by piss poor decisions. I'm not blind to that

I say bring it... for years Sony fans have been saying they needed a Halo killer. Well... now they can play Halo themselves and enjoy what millions of XB fans have been enjoying. Why settle for the rest when you can play the best.

JEECE347d ago

"for years Sony fans have been saying they needed a Halo killer"

Lol are you posting this comment through a portal from the year 2008? The "halo killer" narrative died a long time ago.

Cacabunga347d ago

Darth is stuck in time.. Halo killer was born on xbox OG. Killzone 1 started it but the idea vanished when KZ2 was released in 2008 or 2009.

Profchaos347d ago (Edited 347d ago )

Halo killed itself

CrashMania346d ago

Yep, halo has already has a couple of killers, Microsoft and 343.

S2Killinit346d ago (Edited 346d ago )

Halo died when Bungie was not longer involved, a slow death, but surely 343 studios killed it with each iteration.

The_Hooligan347d ago

I don't know man, lately it seems Halo is the Halo killer. In my opinion Reach was the last good halo game. Although I prefer ODST's campaign over Reach but man that Reach MP was so good.

IAMRealHooman347d ago

343 studios was the halo killer

TiredGamer347d ago

“343 studios was the halo killer”

No truer words have ever been spoken.

PhillyDonJawn346d ago

Halo 5 was much better than Halo reach. (MP)

tebis1347d ago

It was said for a few years, then Halo decide to kill itself.

Profchaos347d ago (Edited 347d ago )

At this point though who hasn't played halo its not like its been cost prohibitive to go buy an old 360 or play it on pc

KwietStorm_BLM346d ago

The media said that. Time and time again. People minding their business on PlayStation didn't say they need a Halo killer. That doesn't even make sense.

1Victor346d ago

@darth: “ I say bring it... for years Sony fans have been saying they needed a Halo killer”
Wait I thought the halo killer was its tv show😂🤣

Sony had a lot of halo killers but couldn’t commit to one all better in one way or another than halo better graphics and gameplay without aim assist = kill zone.
Better multiplayer: Warhawk 32 players and Starhawk 64 players and a lot of fun to play.
Honorable Benton socom so yeah I blame Sony for not committing to what they had or putting it together 🤷🏿

Shiro173346d ago

Technically Halo killed itself.

If it's not Infinite or Master Chief Collection. Then maybe it's just a complete collection? Halo 1-5 + ODST and Infinite with a £70 price tag.

neutralgamer1992346d ago

I think that would be smart but with how MS are handling gears we may see them bring 1 game at a time and charge $50 for each. I wss hoping for a complete gears of war collection

Gears 1-5 all dlx & Gears judgement for $80 but instead we get 1 game. Just like Sony are remastering and remaking games we will see MS now do the same

Eonjay347d ago

Why would Microsoft wait to put this on Switch 2? In a perfect world it would have come to the original Switch.... but if this is not possible, they may be looking to cash in on the fact that it is very likely that most Swich 2 onwers will also a PS5 meaning that they can get a lot of double dippers simply by staggering the releases. I think this is true for multiple Xbox Studios games on PS5. By the next Summer games fest, expect an onslaught of games coming to Switch in the same way they are coming to PlayStation now.

Halo 3 was the epitome of the Saga.
Followed by Halo Reach, Halo 2, Halo CE, Halo 4, Halo 5 and ODST.

crazyCoconuts2190d ago

For the time, I still think the first Halo was the most influential for me. Agreed that 2 & 3 were better games but that first Halo was fresh and new and I still remember getting into my first Warthog. And the Halo LAN parties. Good times...

lifeisgamesok2190d ago

For me it's

Halo 3
Halo 1
Halo Reach
Halo 2
Halo 4
ODST
Halo 5

isarai2190d ago (Edited 2190d ago )

For me it was:

Halo 3>Halo 2>Halo CE>>ODST>>>> reach>>>>>>4 /5

BigTrain2190d ago

For me, it will always be Halo 1. Groundbreaking in every way. Graphically, audibly, technically and gameplay wise. Any Halo thereafter never did it for me. They weren't horrible but they did not hold the precious nuggets of consistent "did you see that?!!" moments that 1 held for me. I played Halo for the single player game although the MP was great, the single player is what hit home for me. So when they released part 2 and hyped up the single player game I was severely disappointed when I got it day one and came home and beat the single player in about 3.5-4 hours. I remember being completely let down.

RamRod882190d ago

Halo 2 has the longest campaign of all the Halo games so I'm not sure how you possibly beat it in 4 hours your first playthrough.

BigTrain2189d ago

I think you need to do some research. Halo 2 does not have the longest campaign by any stretch of the imagination. I picked up the game at a midnight launch brought it home at 1am, popped it in and beat it by the time I had to leave for work the next morning which was 5:30am. My employees at the time had also done the same and we were all pissed when that infamous "Finish the Fight" scene played out and we realized the game was over. The length was one gripe but the nerfing of the pistol as well as the plasma pistol was just wrong. The staff I had at the time were all Halo fans and we all played the original SP and MP religiously. The SP was played mostly on Legendary but when we picked up part 2 we all stuck with the normal difficulty which I think might've been our mistake, we blew through the game like I said in roughly 4 hours.

RamRod882189d ago (Edited 2189d ago )

You and your friends truly are the exception because it took me about 9-10 hours my first play through. Also, if you look up the average play time for Halo 2 it's 8-9 1/2 hours. If you speed run it takes about 4 1/2 which seems silly to do especially someones first play through. Did you play Halo 3 or any other Halo games after that because Halo 2 has one of the longer story modes. Of course they nerfed the Halo 1 pistol lol. I loved that gun too, but it was OP af. Go play Halo 1 multiplayer now in MCC and all everyone uses is the pistol and it just doesn't hold up well because of it and other issues. Halo 2/3 multiplayer hold up phenomenally to this day.

2ndhandcorn2190d ago

I prefer H5 for gameplay going back to the old ones is slow and cumbersome , sure the story was better in the old games .

Concertoine2190d ago

I think halo 3 tops it for me. Can't really think of another game that made so many innovations in one installment. With theater mode, forge mode, 4 player co-op campaign. The replayability with the skulls and unlockable armor. It really felt like a next gen game at the time.
