With that said, using "upgraded" (as opposed to new technology) technology can not only justify a cheaper/decent price point but can fully be backwards compatible with PS3 games since they're still using the same Cell-architecture.

What about games, will it take forever? I think we're pretty secure on that:

any other 2nd party, 1st party exclusive engines.

Couple mistakes in the article. Both the PS1 and PS2 have had features removed when it was shrunk but they also had stuff added, same as the ps3. Not huge issues but things like this should be caught by any "editor".

I think the PS3 is all about setting up the market for the PS4. Introducing Blu-ray was a big step. Setting up the dev community for programming for the cell. Setting up PSN.

They really don't need to do much to scale up the PS4. That was the point. The PS3 components are easily scalable. Add a faster, more efficient cell with 16 or 24 cores. Choose a better GPU. Add the latest BD drive. Put in more RAM and bam! your hardware is pretty much complete and backward compatible with PS3.

3 is just now hitting its stride. It would be foolish to even think of another until around 2014, which is a good 8 years. They would want to make the money back first, and then I believe the next Playstation design will make use of multiple Cells. By then, the Cell will be cheap to manufacture, and we get a cheaper console.

And depending on the times, it's possible that it could be full DD. Just a sexy box simply called 'The PSN' with upgradable storage.

I think the PS4 will have all the bells and whistles when it launches, just like the PS3 did. Sony wants the PS to be at the center of the living room, and that vision was affected by the reality that gamers want a game console, not much more. I did not bought a PS3 at launch (lack of money) but if i have the money for the PS4, i will make the line the first day to get it. Why? Because of my experience with the PS3, PSP and PS2. Sony delivers, period

Ugh. People griped that the PS3 had TOO MANY features when it launched, blaming the price point on a glut of goodies. So they took away the least used features, cut the price in half, and now people are griping again.

i think PS4 is primed to be a powerhouse of hardware like the PS3 but not cost that much. all sony needs to be is add in a souped up CELL, add a better graphics card(larabee?), and add more ram. considering PS4 will most likely use a better version of CELL there won't be that big a programming learning curve from PS3 to PS4 and since it will compose of already existing tech like blu ray and CELL that will much cheaper by then that PS4 will probably launch with a 399 price tag at best

Overcook is a pretty strange term to use for what they are trying to convey. Yes, Sony put a bit too much into the PS3, but that doesn't mean that millions of us don't appreciate that. I think they'll do it again next-gen, but be more careful about pricing.

Probably add a bunch of useless features like rocket boosters, GPS navigator, 2 blu-ray drives, and still expect the consumer to pay over $1000 bucks for it.

if only Microsoft had made the PS3 all these articles would be full of praise.

Learning from the PS3, Sony would likely release with a cheaper product at the cost of having all the features it could (BC, more input slots, etc.).

To have an advanced CELL chip, some added RAM and a next-gen GPU. If anything, I'd like to think that Sony learned from their mistake and add 2gig Video RAM and let the System RAM run independently so In-Game-XMB can run in every game.

Maybe they should reprint this article in several years when it will actually be relevent. The PS3 is going to be around for quite some time still before even a hint of PS4 is uttered by Sony.

I wouldn't call my 60 gig overcooked, but hopefully they'll realize next time that the Playstation brand isn't strong enough to justify such high prices for a console to most consumers.

PS3 60SKU was the best next gen system overall. Best features, best launched games, free online gaming, best value for its price.

The writer only think that is over cooked because he forgot to mentioned that Microsoft launched their system 1 year early and drop its price when the PS3 debut. If both PS3 and XBOX 360 was launched at the same time, definetly PS3 will get the edge due to popularity eventhough it is expensive.

It's not another hate against the PS3.It is asking that Sony doesn't make the same mistake with the PS4.Give us all these features at a high price,Sony doesn't make money,then give us a new Slim console with less features albeit at a good price.I think if Sony wants to take the lead,they need to ''think before they do''.We as PS3 owners,and future owners want our features,but also at a reasonable cost.Not less features for less money.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
