Will Sony Overcook the PS4?

Upon reading more about the new improved slim PS3 it became apparent to us that Sony appear to have "overcooked" the PS3. When the PS3 was released it had full backwards compatibility, 4 USB Ports, Linux Capabilities, fancy touch sensitive on/off and eject buttons (clutching at straws here with that one), a 60GB HDD and a Card Reader. This has steadily all been removed. So, the PS3 price has dropped which is great news, but so has the feature list, and quite extensively.

own an Xbox 360 in 2009? I can't imagine!

Why include the 60gig harddrive as something they've lost when all the drives are now bigger than that? Also the only thing Sony "overcooked" for me, arguably(as mine has been way better value than any of my 360s)is the launch price and the failure to advertise explaining that it was decent value was a big error.

As for the features they have lost-well I'd miss some if I lost them BUT would you if you'd never had them to start with? Certainly I'm in no rush to sort myslef out a replacement for my launch 60gig however much cheaper and cooler to run than mine the Slim may be.

What I really don't get, apart from this being a weird, lazy and tenuous dig at Sony is why they'd think Sony, now slimmed and streamlined themselves as a companu as well, would make any of the same mistakes with PS4 as they have with PS3.

If that was the case and things didn't change from one gen to the next then the 360 would have been just as concrete a performer as the Xbox1 in terms of reliability wouldn't it? I don't see the poiht, tbu.

nycredude6105d ago

Another hater site reaching to find some BS negatives about Ps3 despite its success. By these people's logic the xbox 360 is undercooked. Tards FTL.

wxer6105d ago

Sony made a mistake with the PS3 im 100% they'll not do it on the PS4
and that's the price

the ps3 is a master piece and the exclusives just makes it shine
same thing well be with the PS4 but Sony well make sure that the price of the PS4 is not 600$ when it well first come out

hay6105d ago

@wxer: I kinda thing the Cell was investment for the future. They can upgrade it pretty well, it's efficient and powerful hardware and architecture will be well known by the next gen. I think they'll stick with upgrades of current tech and based on the technology advancement, some new stuff. It's hard to tell what will be new around 2012.

Lifendz6105d ago

the cell, blu-ray, standard HDD, etc. All attempts to make the system future proof. The system was so forward thinking that Sony lost billions just selling it at a fair price. I don't see them rushing to put out new technology (i.e. the PS4) when A) they're able to sell the system for a price of 299.99 and not lose a substantial amount on each system sold and B) the system's re-launch has revived interest in the console and they are currently riding a wave of success that could carry into Spring of next year (when God of War III is released).

PS4 will happen. Xbox 400 will happen. But I think MS will have to release their next system first to revive interest in their product.

a_squirrel6105d ago

how about 8 cells with 8 processors each hooked up (or something equally powerful), standard features and RAM... that's all I want

wxer6105d ago

@ hay

yes
Sony IBM and Toshiba
all of them have dedicated a big amount of cash and time in the cell

IBM uses it in high end performance servers
Toshiba in high performance TV's
and Sony in the PS3

im sure they'll develop a new upgraded cell
with more power
and im not sure if they'll make it easer to program for
but maybe

PS4 well have a big amount of ram
with a powerful GPU and a much more faster blu-ray

and sony made a very clever move with blu-ray
in Microsoft's next xbox Microsoft wont put in it blu-ray because in that case they'll have to pay royalties to Sony
and ofcourse Microsoft cant stick to DVD-9 for ever
so Microsoft is in pretty bad situation

Sony maybe in a bad situation now
but im 100% sure that the next gen is already in Sony's pocket

PS3PCFTW6105d ago

wise wise observation.

i cant give u bubbles but congrats eitherway

ABizzel16105d ago

Honestly I hope Sony goes all out with the PS4. I for one bought the 60GB as well, and I'm happy with it since I have a nice size PS2 library and when there's a dry spell for PS3 games I go out and buy PS2 games.

With that being said when they do bring out the PS4 they need to keep the price consumer friendly seeing how things turned out this gen, they won't make a $600 console unless the economy booms. I expect them to launch at $400 for as long as they can and then drop to $300 since they now know (due to the slim) that $300 is the magic number for PS consoles.

I say make a $500 system that does everything, and a $350 that does a lot, but is mainly geared towards games and everything will be fine. Then price drop $400 and $250. You can expect a price somewhere in that area since I'm pretty sure next gen all games will be 3D. Goodness I can't wait. We have a clue what next gen graphics will look like, take a look at Uncharted 2 cutscenes and that's what we'll be playing when the next systems come out.

nycredude6105d ago

All SOny has to do is upgrade the cell to a version with more qores, update the rsx, and drop more memory in and call it a day. The Ps3 architecture is plenty powerful enough.

ABizzel16104d ago

@ above

The PS3 architecture is plenty powerful enough now, but not in the 4-6 years it'll take for the PS4 to come out. Sony needs to do something else, but I agree with you they need to do something to get the most out of the cell that they can. They need to use the cell to power the next PSP, and possibly use a port built up of multiple cells for the PS4. Get your money's worth before moving on to the next thing.

i think next time round sony will have a better strategy with the ps4, much more similar to this re-launch of the slim we've just seen. A cheaper to manufacture ps4 will already be on the cards because they will of course use the cell again (maybe twice). Plus the ps4 is atleast 5 - 6 years away. alot can change.

table6105d ago (Edited 6105d ago )

yeah they have already invested their money into the Cell technology so if the continue to use this, which is very likely, it will save them alot of money. Likewise with the blu-ray and the improvements on it in the future and the continued cost efficiency of the tech. I think they have learned their lesson in pricing a system too high and a launch ps4 could be as cheap as $400. Perhaps the big investment in the ps3 will help them in keeping the ps4 affordable.

hay6105d ago (Edited 6105d ago )

Sony isn't dumb. I think despite the mistakes they've made PS3 it's more like an preparation the PS4 generation.

Cell was a new tech, it's almost certain that they'll reuse this architecture pushing it even farther, the same with blu-ray. It just won the format war and it's capable of holding more than 50gigs of space quite easily. Home can be moved to the next gen without much problems, and motion controls will be established technology along with 3D by that time.

I think with PS3 they made a path for PS4 and their future business plan.

Note that they weren't really fighting with the competition until this year.

TMAN6105d ago

I don't know.I think we will see one by 2012.

crillyconlig6105d ago

will probly be much the same as the ps3, but just bigger numbers, more ram, more processing power, more hdd.

gaming at the minute is such high quality that there realy is no rush for new consoles

Silence6105d ago

"bigger numbers, more ram, more processing power, more hdd."

Then it wouldn't really be the same now would it?

LukaX236105d ago

Is asking dumb questions news?

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle30d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga38d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199238d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga38d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac38d ago (Edited 38d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman37d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box38d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion37d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7238d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7538d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit38d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14938d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7738d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
