Apple throws down the gauntlet

The competition between iPhone, PSP and DS is hotting up - Apple used its iPod showcase event today to highlight its position in comparison to other handheld games platforms.

"When [DS and PSP] came out, they seemed so cool. But once you play a game on the iPod touch, you think 'hey, these things aren't so cool any more..." said Apple's marketing VP Phil Schiller.

"We're talking about 25, 30, 40 dollars a title. The kids can't afford those titles. Worse isn't the price, it's the buying experience."

A demo slide at the event compared the quantity of games on the platforms: PSP's 607 games, DS' 3,680 and then iPod touch's 21,178, before kicking into a video montage of App Store games.

LMAO you have to be kidding me, right?

PLAYINB3YOND6081d ago

Apple have gotten so c0cky recently because of their Iphone and iPod touch success', someone needs to knock 'em back a little with a better product.

Kaneda6081d ago

The last time I checked their products are top notch in term of hardware and OS.. :) based on customer satisfaction data..

saint_john_paul_ii6081d ago

but their games arent up to quality compared to a DS/PSP game.

Kaneda6081d ago (Edited 6081d ago )

I played one of the golf game on iphone/ipod touch. It is as good as Hot Shots Golf on PSP. So there are quality games for iphone/ipod touch. But there are just a lot more shovelware.

As a Mac owner, I have to say that Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo need to all approach Apple and kick those apples between its legs before they grow even larger. Love the OS, but can't stand those iPhone snobs.

"PSP's 607 games, DS' 3,680 and then iPod touch's 21,178"

Right. A majority of those 21k apps are shovelware.

tonsoffun6081d ago

I agree with you guys that quantity does not and never will equal quality.... but from a horsepower standpoint, it rivals both the PSP and DS and it's only a matter of time before we start to see great games on the iPhone.

saint_john_paul_ii6081d ago

Come back to me when it has buttons. Then we will talk about the Great games the iphone has to offer.

iPhone is relevant for gaming today. I wouldn't be caught dead with a PSP. You want Hi-res hardcore gaming, get on the 360 or PS3.

Apparently Apple is fighting for some market share in the gaming space. You might hate it and disagree but THAT was inevitable.

I'm betting that Apple is not only going to get in the handheld gaming biz but do it better than everyone else too.

Apple is going up for the mass market. In which it's having great success. That I believe is the reason SONY is coming out with the PSP Go. Hopefully they will now open the market just as Apple did and let developers come from everywhere do develop games and app's. SONY can still have the quality but could you imagine having the choices that you have with the app store. That would be a great reason to buy a GO.

Yes but these "bite sized" apple games are shovelware.
"PSP's 607 games, DS' 3,680 and then iPod touch's 21,178"
This only means you have to sift through pages of BS before finding anything worth buying. Have they ever played PSP games like Socom FTB2, God of War Chains of Olympus and Final Fantasy Crisis Core? Those are REAL, full games that justify the price tag.

Buying experiences like buying an iPhone and having to wait 2 days to use the phone side of it :P

21,000 is a high number but most of that isn't good or long lasting, just some cheap novel which allows you to show off your iphone to friends.

FiftyFourPointTwo6081d ago

STFU Apple. Fix your exploding iPhones first.

n4f6081d ago

i heard they use them in afghanistan

SpoonyRedMage6081d ago

And how many of those 21,178 games don't have retarded controls?

meepmoopmeep6081d ago

you do realize the games are made for the touch screen and do very well in doing so?

much like DS games incorporating the pen. they're made that way and use the tech for what it is.

SpoonyRedMage6081d ago

That's only the well made games though and they are the really small minority. I also don't think the "virtual d-pad" constitutes good controls.

meepmoopmeep6081d ago

have you tried it?

it's the same as the DS there are great games and there are crappy games
