New Dreamcast Game Announced

Bitmob Writes: The Dreamcast's 10-year anniversary just got a little more exciting. Redspotgames, a publisher that thankfully didn't get the memo about the system's demise, has just announced a new game for the Sega Dreamcast!

That's right; Rush Rush Rally Racing will be hitting Amazon and eBay's virtual store shelves this October for the low price of $22! I can't believe I'm actually typing these words in 2009, but you can pre-order this Dreamcast game now via the publisher's website.

What was so special about the dreamcast? And if it was really so good? Why did it die off so fast?

Megaton6093d ago (Edited 6093d ago )

The 3 P's that killed the Dreamcast:

- Piracy
- PlayStation
- Peter Moore

I've still got one, and still play it at least once a week.

crck6092d ago

The Dreamcast had great games and was the first console to offer online gaming out of the box. It died because Sega didn't have the money to support it any longer. After 3 commercial failures in a row (sega cd, 32x and saturn) they were essentially broke. I mean look how much money Sony has lost on the PS3 and Microsoft on the original Xbox. We're talking billions of dollars. Sega was trying to take on mega corporations and just didn't have the money to pull it off. The only reason Nintendo has been able to stay in business before the success of the Wii is because of their past monopoly in the handheld space.

The Dreamcast was a great console. Judging by the fact that it died relatively quickly isn't really getting a good picture of it if you never actually owned a DC. I don't understand why it's cool to hate on it.

Bonehead decisions killed off what was otherwise a very good console.

Mainly no piracy protection and no DVD. And compared to PS2, no BC. And PS titles were far more popular with FFs and the like.

Then they let brilliant Yu Suzuki go insane with the budget to make an insanely brilliant game that sells far short of making any profit. Like crck says, they were already suffering from past investments so I'm not sure what they were thinking. Playing it safe, they were not. They did a lot of stuff wrong and paid the price, sadly.

ambientFLIER6092d ago

No backwards compatibility? Did you expect it to play genesis games? :P

Tony P6092d ago

You ever heard of a Sega Saturn, man?

Sarcasm6092d ago

I wonder if Sega will ever try to introduce a new console. Not this gen, but maybe the next?

GameGambits6092d ago

SEGA and I are not on speaking terms when it comes to consoles. I bought my DreamCast a week before all the news spilled out that it was game over for it. I could've spent that money then for a PS2, but was suckered in by a buddy to get it for Phantasy Star Online.(Awesome game back in the day.)

Before long I just saved up enough for a PS2 as well. I didn't play much games on DC, but I fully enjoyed Grandia 2, PSO 1 and 2, and Sonic.

If SEGA ever did get back in the console game they should be wise to partner up with someone like Apple so as to not fail.

Syronicus6092d ago

I remember countless hours spent on Skies of Arcadia and Grandia. Both were awesome games. Crazy Taxi and Vigilanti 8 were great too. There were so many great titles for that system. It's a shame it went under.

ambientFLIER6092d ago

"You ever heard of a Sega Saturn, man?"

No, and judging by its sales, neither has anyone else :P

SuperStrokey11236092d ago

The Dreamcast had BC, but oddly enough only for PS1 games via bleemcast...

Elven66092d ago

Peter Moore/Sega of America did not kill the Dreamcast, Sega of Japan merely used them as the "fall guys". Peter Moore and a few other SEGA employees have been pretty vocal about it. More recently,

Plenty of decisions were made in the creation of the dreamcast. Go over to IGN.com to read about the history of the DC and you will understand.

As for me, I was playing marvel vs capcom this morning before I had to go to work. It is truly a remarkable machine for its time. The leap of performance from saturn to DC is much greater (it seems) than the leap from ps1 to ps2. First game to last game on a DC is just hands down amazing. PS has its loyal fan base but the dc relied on heart and soul to try and continue.

It wasnt enough as people just kept passing on the greatness it had to offer in favor of the impending release of the ps2. I have to hand it to the sony loyal. When they stick by something they do it to the end. Sega had that at one time. Many gave up when saturn was involved because they liked the look and feel of ps1 which is understandable. Saturn had strengths but it had more weaknesses too.

Sega did everything right with the DC and still got passed over. Yet without the dreamcast in the history books we would not have systems as complex and enjoyable as the xbox, 360, ps3 (no rrod jokes). For it gave birth to what we all enjoy now which is online competition. you can make fun of it as a failure but you cant change the fact it helped move the industry from a localized structure of friends playing side by side to a structure of everyone playing around the world.

RIP DC.

YogiBear6092d ago

Saturn actually sold pretty well out of the gate and then the PS1 dropped and that was pretty much all she wrote.

Tony P6092d ago

"No, and judging by its sales, neither has anyone else :P "

I think your disagrees tell a different story.

@Darth

I think they did plenty wrong. But true, they did a LOT right. The modem was ahead of it's time and the VMU is a gaming masterpiece. I felt like it made up for how Sony never ported the Pocketstation. You could trade games with people without a console present...or play minigames on the VMU. And some games took advantage of the extra screen during play, like VMU play calling for sports titles. Brilliant imo.

They were really ahead of the curve...built-in online, VGA compatibility, VMU, and even a camera years before an Eye Toy ever came out.

And it just goes to show there's still a lot of interest in Sega's hardware. I really believe Sega should get back on the hardware business, but not with a new console in the traditional sense of the word. Instead, they should release a system that could play the entire catalogue of all the consoles released by Sega in the past. Games would be available trough download only in a Virtual Console/PSPgo style. Master System, Game Gear and Mega Drive emulation is extremely easy, they already own emulation software for the Saturn and they could make the hardware compatible with the Dreamcast. They could even throw in some of the long lost arcade games such as Daytona 2. Add to that an upscaller for today's HDTVs and you got yourself a winner. Every hardcore gamer worthy of that name on the planet would buy one.

Maybe I should patent the idea...

Millah6092d ago

Man I still remember that amazing launch lineup of the Dreamcast. I've never been as excited for a new console launch as I was for the Dreamcast, there were so many great games. I remember when Hollywood Video had a special with Sega and offered the Dreamcast for rental before it launched. Good times.

barom6092d ago

Dreamcast is way overappreciated. When I ask almost anyone about what games they enjoyed, they can only list a handful. Maybe it's one of them consoles you had to be there to know what was up.

too many people were pirating games and ps2 came out. It was just a painful death for the dreamcast

swiftshot936093d ago

Who said the war is over? Dreamcast still has a chance.

cRIPticon6092d ago

Wrong on the piracy thing. It was not piracy but the over extension of CSK and the looming PS2.

Elven66092d ago

Piracy did play a role, no one was buying games for the system, very few Dreamcast games broke 1 million units and with numbers like that Piracy definietly plays some what of a impactful role.

cRIPticon6092d ago (Edited 6092d ago )

@Elven6: again, the piracy scene at the time vs. the install base was not a major reason for the DC's demise. It was a concern, but it was not what sunk the Dreamcast. The money required for keeping pace in the market with PS2 was too much for Sega, given that they were also still supporting 4 other systems and services in Japan.

Sure, piracy sucked, but it is not what killed the Dreamcast. Not by a long shot.

The Dreamcast will never die! (It will continue to get the occasional bizarre release from time to time)

ThatArtGuy6093d ago

If you go by that, the Atari 2600 is the most viable of the retro consoles.

Jamescagney6093d ago

I love the dreamcast.

*burns game*

It's great.

I tip my e-hat off to you for the lol.
