I hope they maintain some sort of quality control if they do this. Sure, it would be nice to have PSP dev kits more readily available to those who wish to make games, but if every Tom, D!ck and Harry who ever took a C++ course gets their hands on one we'll end up with a flood of crap games like the indie section on Xbox Live.

Hmm. I wonder what you would need to do in order to qualify for a free dev kit? I'm a computer science student and I dabble in game development, I wouldn't mind having a PSP dev kit to just try some things out, but I'm not sure if there are any specific requirements you'd have to meet. I mean, they can't very well just give away free dev kits to everyone who asks, can they?

Ah, but then we would need some sort of rating system so that all the crap gets filtered out. Not sure if leaving how high a game sits on a list to people is such a good idea. Just look at all the fart apps on the iPhone.

If anyone can make apps then the PSP stiore will be flooded with rubbish like the apps store for apple.

At the end of the day the people who will make GOOD mini applications will be doing it to make money, and so they are willing to pay for the dev kits.

Cutting the price is fine, but we need something there, even if its a small cost, to stop anyone from creating useless rubbush.
