And The PS3 Box Redesigns Commence

With a new PS3 comes a new PS3 logo, and with a new PS3 logo comes a new PS3 box. And a new PS3 box means all the cover art we've seen for upcoming games needs to be changed.

First off the blocks is Uncharted 2. Old art on the left, new one on the right. Note the art itself hasn't changed, and probably won't for other games in this situation. Still, the new box is definitely an improvement. Getting rid of that "PLAYSTATION 3" spine down the side certainly gives the art some room to breathe.

*sigh* This really f*cks up my collection. My DVD shelf will look stupid.

MurderMyDoll6101d ago

I know, it's freaking ridiculous, 2 years into the lifespan on the PS3 they change the box art and make my collection look like it's for different consoles.

Feral Gamer6101d ago (Edited 6101d ago )

I completely agree! As I stated in a post days ago, a new era of gaming deserves a new logo! Just let the PS2-like logo die with the console.

You guys are getting agitated over box art? Really now.

umair_s516101d ago

We don't have much left to complain about..

Marceles6101d ago (Edited 6101d ago )

lol @ box art complaints, I guess Kotaku got their wish. Whatever they mention, bring in the people to hate.

Kotaku: "what about that thank you ad?"
Haters: "YEAH SONY! THOSE THANK YOU ADS SUCK!"
Kotaku: "what about that boxart guys?"
Haters: "YEAH IT'S HORRIBLE! YOU SUCK SONY!"

sunil6101d ago

personally I felt that the previous one was better, this one seems wide... but am sure I will grow into it

Pandamobile6101d ago (Edited 6101d ago )

PC games come in a large assortment of boxes. Don't be a baby.

Old jewel cases, DVD cases, PC game cases, cardboard boxes, etc. My shelf is all mix and match :P

iHEARTboobs6101d ago

Yeah it seems a bit petty to get bent out of shape over a change in the box art.

morganfell6101d ago

It seems Marceles is the only one that realizes the only reason Kotaku published this story was to take a jab at Sony.

whothedog6101d ago (Edited 6101d ago )

That's not fair, That's not fair at all. There was time now, there was, was all the time I needed. That's not fair, that's not fairrrr...

Cwalat6101d ago

I actually like the newer boxart more than the earlier ones, although i would also be pissed if i had large collection of games.

Luckily, (or maybe not) my brother took all the games with the old 60GB, and now i have to buy new games... hopefully the new cases come out soon so that will be the new version of my collection.

Kudos to Sony for making them sexier!

Microsoft Xbox 3606101d ago (Edited 6101d ago )

Boohoo my shelf will look stupid. LOL. Jeez, people these days care about the littlest most unimportant things.

callahan096101d ago

Oh, come on, it's not that big of a deal. My shelf is already non-uniform because I've got games from China, Japan, and USA on my shelf, and they all have different spine designs. But I guess I'm one of the few that regularly buys games from different regions.

Anyway, Sony redesigned the PSone box arts after about year. The first year they came in big long boxes, then afterwards they just came in standard CD jewel cases. That was a more drastic redesign than this redesign. I like the new box art anyway, but older games printed the older way could become collectibles at some point. Especially games that were already somewhat limited in production, like Disgaea 3, Valkyria Chronicles, and Folklore.

ape0076101d ago

the new boxes looks better,it's so fresh,u can't beat that "PS3" logo

I really hated the spiderman letters

great

chaosatom6101d ago

i actually liked the spider-man logo, but i don't really care.

cmrbe6101d ago

Mine is the exact case as yours. PS3 games from everywhere i go.

Prototype6101d ago

I could care less about the box art/logos my concern is the game itself. I go for games not "Oh my god look the logo is so ugly and it doesn't fit my current collection." My biggest piss off is the ones that refuse to buy greatest hits version of games because they swear it's not authentic; granted some (key word SOME) games did have few changes however it was still the same game, and sometimes the greatest hits was better with the added content.

If you wanna argue about change lets bring up Windows XP vs Vista

Christopher6101d ago

Amount of time I spend looking at box art: less than 1 minute

Amount of time I spend looking at in-game graphics: 6-200 hours

Hmm... decisions decisions decisions...

HolyOrangeCows6101d ago

But as long as the games still rock....

Boody-Bandit6101d ago (Edited 6101d ago )

If anything it will help you separate your older titles from your newer ones. As long as they are the same size case who cares?

dragunrising6101d ago

I like the new style although I'm undecided if I like it more than the original. The original case had this ying and yang quality about it; Only On PlayStation in black followed by PlayStation Network in white. Overall I like the new font used for PS3.

saint_john_paul_ii6101d ago

"2 years into the lifespan on the PS3 they change the box art and make my collection look like it's for different consoles."

you know its says PS3 on the redesigned box, right? seriously. people complain for anything.

Karum6101d ago

Are you two serious?

Wow...

Sarcasm6101d ago

Do people play boxarts or play the game?

starcb266101d ago

if anybody has a red case from a greatest hits game it doesn't matter

duplissi6101d ago

lol, if you are soo worried about how your collection is going to look, then just make some new box art inserts. scan and then photoshop the old ones with the design of the new one.

if it bothers you that much.

rockleex6101d ago

I could care less how they would look next to my new games.

I'm sure Kigmal and MurderMyDoll don't have 20 PS3 games to worry about.

Arnon6100d ago (Edited 6100d ago )

I honestly think that the new headline on the box would look better if they were placed on the original DVD boxes much like the PS2. The way they did this... it just... makes the entire cover look cramped and stuffed together. Also, it reminds me too much of a PSP box, and while that isn't a bad thing, the only reason the PSP box works, is because it's in rectangle form.

That being said, I don't really care. It's just a box, and the thing I'll be looking at the most is my TV.

I don't mind the change but I do prefer the spiderman font. In my mind it's more "extreme" the new ps3 font seems a little kiddih to me.

Microsoft Xbox 3606101d ago

Funny, the spidey font seems more kiddie to me. The new font is smooth and really classy. Very Sony-like.

ape0076101d ago

agreed,it feels "PLAYSTATION"

PS360PCROCKS6101d ago

I hate it...I love the playstation 3 logo. To me playstation is the brand, PS is the nickname

cmrbe6101d ago

This one looks more in tune with gaming and the Playstation brand. The Sipderman font was too foreign. Everythime i looked at it it reminded me of Spiderman and not playstation.

Ikuhara6101d ago

why'd you have to do this to uncharted? =(
ahh well, gotta get used to the change I suppose.

theEnemy6101d ago

As long as they haven't change the side art, then it's ok with me.

Uncharted 2 Is the Most Important PlayStation Exclusive of All Time

In a list of games that defined the PlayStation 3, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves would certainly be one of the top contenders. The blockbuster sequel to 2007’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune not only received critical acclaim and became a massive hit for Sony’s third console when it was released 15 years ago on October 13th, 2009, but it also cemented Naughty Dog’s future as a developer of cinematic, story-driven action-adventure games as opposed to its history of colorful platformers like Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter from previous PlayStation generations. To this day, Uncharted 2 stands as one of the PS3’s best exclusives and one of the most important PlayStation games of all time.

gold_drake558d ago

it was pretty good. especially the multiplayer

KyRo558d ago

I loved this era on multiplayer games from Sony. People used to call the modes tacked on multiplayer but they were enjoyable. I loved Factions even more. I'm Still gutted that the second one isn't coming out.

-Foxtrot558d ago

Yeah, that one game where it not only has an amazing single player but the multiplayer was also just as good.

A fresh a breath air with it's more "skill focused, less is more" multiplayer in a time during COD fever where every other game with online was trying to be like it.

Shame NaughtyDog eventually did do COD like things with Uncharted 3 and 4, they ruined what made the original so good. It become an over the top arcade fest in the end.

Inverno558d ago

Ironic cause the MP was basically Halo, and Bungie helped on the technical side of things too. MP was more simple back then, I've said this before but I played U2 MP religiously. I sucked at it like you have no idea, but mah gawd did I have so much fun. Can't find an MP game that hooked me like U2s these days. Then Factions came along and while it had its problem I found new religion with it. Agh damn it why did they cancel Factions 2 bruhh.

gold_drake558d ago

i had so much fun too, played almost every night with mates or cousins baha

Relientk77558d ago

It is for sure my favorite game in the series. It's such a blast to play. The train levels still hold up and are fun as hell as well as the entire game.

RaidenBlack558d ago (Edited 558d ago )

Still remember the first gameplay video ... shooting the chasing truck and then the beautiful visuals & details whilst traversing the dilapidated Nepal streets ... perfection
Too bad Sony never ported the trilogy to PC ...

RaiderNation558d ago

I would argue it's God of War.

darthv72558d ago

I'll say, the PS3 really did sequels better than people give it credit for. Resistance 2, Uncharted 2, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Infamous 2... all were better than their initial offerings and still hold up to this day.
