PS2 Games on Blu-Ray

Now that God of War I and II are being bundled on one blu ray disc, buzz has begun as to the fate of the rest of the PS2's library. With the presumed death of of backward compatibility, it would seem Sony has something else planned. The blu ray disc format is quite large compared to DVD. So what is Sony cooking up. Could a multi game blu ray replace backward compatibility?

I'd love to see ICO & Shadow of the colossus on one disk!

Chuck-Norris6099d ago

Never got arround to play ico but Shadow of the Colossus is probably my favorite game of last gen. And judging by the reviews ico got and the footage i've seen i think its an awesome experience as well.

rhood0226099d ago

I'd buy a remastered Ico & SOTC.

Now, if Sony could swing blu-ray releases of:

Kingdom Hearts 1&2
MGS 1,2,3
FF X, X-2, XII

And PSN releases of:

Chrono Cross
FF VIII, IX

I could finally retire all those disks that served me well over the years.

Since all that info about the patents to make the cell emulate the cpu and gpu of the ps2 I have been stating the next move is sony to rerelease ps2 titles with upgraded visuals and trophy support on psn.

The error in my thinking was "PSN" as we are seeing they are taking that notion of what I had originally thought and bringing it to disc. It may not stop them from releasing games on psn as well.

@wakka below: yes you would need to repurchase game(s) you may already own but that is up to the consumer to make that choice. Chances are if you have the original then you have the means to play it (ie: PS2). What sony is offering is incentive to purchase the newer rerelease versions with added features like graphics and trophies. Honestly I think it is a big 1up to MS because you would think they should have added achievement support to xbox original when they were made for dl.

Anyway, you dont have to purchase the remasterd version. Especially if you think it will somehow devalue the original disc version. I would say otherwise. You wont need to play the original and be able to keep it as pristeen as you can while playing the new release version.

I still think sony will take the psn route as well as disc release. There are other compilations that they would have more control over being 1st or 2nd party studios. Jak/daxter series, Rachet/clank series, Sly cooper series, etc.

Only ones that have a big "?" are 3rd party ones like devil may cry series, metal gear and final fantasy series. Those could get the same treatment from the respected companies.

I can say that recently I have been in a rebuying mood for games I already have. Thanks in part to the upgraded stuff they contain. I have purchased rtype dimensions and tmnt turtles in time on xbla as well as bionic commando rearmed on psn.

Nothing wrong with that.

Snoogins6099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

...is the same as what has been said by several posters already. I want:
God of War Collection (excited because I no longer have a BC PS3)
Ico & Shadow of the Colossus (Ico is hard to find without paying out the @$$)
Silent Hill Collection (1-4 at least)
Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection
EDIT: Zone of the Enders Collection

I'm sure PS2 classics will come to PSN, but I prefer physical copies.

meepmoopmeep6099d ago

i'm 100% with rhood022

those are the ones i want as well.

Miraak82 6099d ago

I'd like to see a xenosaga or a legacy of kain compilation

Information Minister6099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

I think a "Zone of the Enders Collection" or a "Team Ico Collection" would be awesome, but nevertheless we should be cautious about these remakes. I'm ok with them when they are released before a new chapter in the franchise, allowing more people to enjoy the experience. Lets just not get carried away and start remaking old games left and right. We have plenty of sequels and few new IPs as it is. We need new games and fresh experiences.

Personally I won't be buying the God of War remakes, because I just don't have the time or money to spend on games that I already own and played through several times. Also I don't really care about trophies. Maybe if they overhauled the graphics completely.

BTW Wakka, I seriously doubt Sony will break into my house, put a gun to my head and force me to buy GoW again.

ZombieAutopsy6099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

wtf is up with n4g lately its been posting my comments in the wrong spot.

Rifle-Man6099d ago

I just paid $70 for a copy of Ico, so if they put out a Team Ico disc for $40 like the GOW compilation, that would be a phenomenal deal.

Wakka_6099d ago

Just add BC. Sony is screwing their customers by making them rebuy the games they already own.

nightelfmohawk6099d ago

Speak for yourself. I personally would LOVE to see classic PS2 games re-released as collections on blu-ray on PS3 with trophy support, 720 graphics, 60 fps, etc.

TheTeam066099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

it's the same game with added features and HD graphics. That would be worth it for many people, especially considering there are people who re-purchase PS1 games and Xbox originals that are basically just thrown in there (with the exception of manuals in the PS1 classics).

@below: coming from a guy who pays for something others get free everywhere else, that means alot. Pick your pants up, I think M$ is done with you.

RememberThe3576099d ago

People are excited about the release of GOW1 and 2 because the game is being remastered in 720p and trophy support is being added.

That is in no way anal rape as you have described it.

deshon096099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

you talk about bending over and taking it you seem to be a pro because are always taking from ms get off ms b*ll

cmrbe6099d ago

bending over is accepting 54% failure rate and loving it.

Synex6099d ago

Sony is a business. The purpose of a business is to make money. They're not screwing you over; you have the choice to purchase these games or not. This is a genius idea on their part, and I like it. I'm willing to pay extra for remastered ps2 classics.

soxfan20056099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

Wakka is right. It's pretty clear now why Sony is not bringing back backwards compatability. Why give customers something for free when they are willing to pay for it?

Launch PS3's could play God of War 1 & 2, upscaled to HD resolution, for free. Now, anyone else who wants the same capability must pay extra for it because Sony has removed BC.

Imagine if MS removed BC from future Xbox 360's, then released a Halo 1 & 2 compiliation disc. I wonder what the PS3 supporters here would say about that.

You don't have to defend EVERYTHING Sony does or says - it's OK to admit that sometimes they care more about their bottom line than they do about their customers. N4G double standard rears it's ugly head again.

Microsoft Xbox 3606099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

Seriously, how are we defending Sony? We, the consumers asked for it in a survey and they delivered. If you think that is the consumers bending down for Sony you two are borderline retarded.

soxfan20056099d ago

You told Sony that you wanted to pay extra for the same feature every launch PS3 owner got for free? Not to mention, a feature that 360 offers for free? Are you borderline retarded?

RememberThe3576099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

You have the nerve to ask him if he's restarted?

Sony sent around a survey a while back asking what PS3 gamer wanted in the GOW3 special edition. The majority of people asked for GOW1 and 2 on a Blu-Ray release.

These games were not launched with 720p HD support or trophies. Why are you so butt hurt about it anyway?

ZombieAutopsy6099d ago

your a terrible bot, do your xbox original games come with acheivements when you buy them off xbl...no. Are they rememastered in 720p...no. Are you going to suck a big fat MS you know what tonight...yes. I love my xbox but why are you gonna set here and try to bash something people wanted, and not only is it what they wanted its more. Your just a poor little boy trying to put down the other guy because your insecure.

TheTeam066099d ago

@sox

I have an original 60GB PS3 and I'm buying this. Why? Because for one, they aren't upscaled graphics, they are 720p HD (PS2 games don't look that great on an HDTV). They added trophy support, which adds replayability and three, it's what consumers chose out of a survey. It's $40 for god sakes, it's not gonna break the bank. If you want a PS3 with BC, there are people selling them on eBay and craigslist (or traded for a Slim). I've also noticed Gamestop had a 60GB in their store.

More importantly, why do you care? Don't buy it if you don't like it. I can buy both for PS2, but I'm getting this one instead because it has more value. And as you can tell, people are willing to pay for a remastered classic. If you haven't noticed, there are already articles requesting more.

GoldenBoy6099d ago

So know Sony is screwing the consumer right? MS has done the same with its peripherals for 4 years now. The companies can be considered on equal footing.

Sony won't release BC because they can make money on selling PS2's and potentially releasing upgraded collections series (which this one was asked for BTW - I voted for it as well and I own the originals).

MS won't drop the price of HDD and Wireless Adaptors because that is where they top up their revenue streams. Based on your argument all of us are bending over for our respective console makers and they love us for it (but not enough to give us much for free in return). In essence your points are irrelevant. Let's just all enjoy the fact that two great games are getting re-released and consumers have the option of buying something of quality or leaving on the shelf. For me I will be buying them again. Trophies YO!!!

Ri0tSquad6099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

He shouldn't even be allowed to post in the open zone. All of his posts are intended to bash Sony(look at his history). Who else is trying to spin this news as much as him? No one, because everyone else has enough intelligence to know that adding BC wouldn't allow for trophies, AA, and 720p resolution.

@Soxfan

"You told Sony that you wanted to pay extra for the same feature every launch PS3 owner got for free?"

What part of remastered don't you understand? Or added trophies, or higher native resolution, or AA. None of which can be achieved by playing PS2 games on PS3 with BC enabled.

"Not to mention, a feature that 360 offers for free?"

It's limited, some games have glitches, and no Xbox 1 games receive achievements. Out of the 50+ Xbox 1 games that I own, less then 15 of them work with 360 and some of them have issues.

"Are you borderline retarded?"

That's something you should consider asking yourself. What's so stupid about giving something that the FANS requested?

matchgrade6099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

Not to mention that a lot of the most beloved PS2 classics like Ico and Zone of the Enders 2 are out of production for the PS2 and are extremely difficult to find in stores nowadays. These re-releases help out the people who didn't buy them before. I myself bought a PS2 after I bought a PS3 and I can't find many of the PS2 games I want anymore, so I'd greatly appreciate any sort of reprint that Sony has to offer. I don't see how we're being anally raped if Sony's not forcing anyone to buy the new Blu Ray releases. Most people who have those games already probably kept their PS2, so they wouldnt need to rebuy them unless they wanted to. For people who don't have them, a new release would be most welcome.

soxfan20056099d ago

Looks like I touched a nerve. I posted here to prove a point. Let's see if everyone who bashes me also bashes the PS3 fanboys who post over and over in EVERY 360 article - specifically anything to do with Forza 3. Are you going to come down on them for their nonsense as hard as you have come down on me? Or, am I right about the N4G double standard? Time will tell (but I think I already know the answer).

moparful996098d ago

See thats your damn problem.. You come into a clearly ps3 related article, proceeding to insult ps3 fans who are genuinely excited about the remastering of two stellar ps2 classics, then whenever people rebutle in defense you get all butt hurt and go off on a tangent about the double standard on n4g whenever you yourself are guilty of that standard within the vain of this conversation... Let me give you some advice that has served me well.. think b4 you speak and in the rare occassion you spout off prematurely own up to your mistake.. You are making yourself look very ignorant right now.... Your comments are not welcome in the ps3 related articles because you have a history of this bs and frankly i'm sick of it... grow a pair and get over your damn pride.....

Wakka

We ps3 owners must buy our old ps2 games back to help sony make money

WMW6099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

@ corywebb93 and Wakka
it must be painful for you to see this god of war collection have more content and HD graphics when most 360 don't have HD and 360 devs leave content out of 360 "exclusives" to put into the ps3 version(bioshock, tales of vesperia, eternal sonata) or to sell it to you later like gears 2 and sony isn't ripping anyone off better graphics, 2 games and trophies all for $40 halo odst has everything halo 3 has with a few extras for $60 so MS as usual is ripping you off

corywebb936099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

Stop trying to act like if i dont

My psn tag is coreywebb93

bunbun7776099d ago (Edited 6099d ago )

its possible that corey was being literal when he said we need to give Sony more money.

I don't really agree with that notion-- but i do like to see companies get rewarded by consumers for making good decisions--

Remember-- just cuz all your friends may want it-- doesn't mean you have to get it = )

((i'm getting this ---oh yea its gonna be awesome))

DonCorneo6099d ago

even without using a ps3.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
