Apple: The New Microsoft

Well, that didn't take long.

In a decade, Apple has gone from niche-market roadkill to a company whose growing dominance and competitive tactics in a booming market are thrilling investors, angering competitors, and drawing regulatory scrutiny.

Unless Apple shows a quick change of attitude, the benefit of its market position--power, scrutiny, and tens of billions in profit--are only going to grow.

Apple is no longer the beloved underdog that Microsoft kept alive in the late 1990s to improve its own standing in the eyes of regulators (remember the investment and agreement to keep building Office for the Mac?). Apple is now the wildly profitable owner of the dominant iPod platform and rapidly-becoming dominant iPhone platform, which are really one in the same. Unlike any other competitor in the industry, moreover--including the still PC-centric Microsoft--Apple has managed to link the two big personal computing platforms together, through its software and resurgent Mac business.

When Apple gains more than 10% Market Share(like 25%), we'll talk.

Captain Tuttle6107d ago

"The bottom line: The mobile market seems to be well on its way to becoming a platform market, just the way the PC market did. And Apple is well on its way to dominating this market, the way Microsoft did with PCs.

So it's no wonder that Apple investors are excited about the company's future. And it's no wonder that consumers, competitors, and regulators are already getting agitated."

Arthur_6107d ago (Edited 6107d ago )

Apple owes the success of the Ipod and Iphone to MS.

Do you have any idea of how poorly the Ipod was selling, before it became compatible with Windows?

I read everything, dont worry.

Captain, can I be your first mate? lol.

StanLee6107d ago

I was thinking the same thing. Apple is all marketing and hype. Market share is still only 13%. Windows based PCs have a market share of 86%.

Captain Tuttle6107d ago

Do you guys actually think that the Federal Trade Commission is investigating Apple because of their 10% marketshare in personal computers? I guess M$ (lol) is moneyhatting the government now?

Major_Tom6107d ago (Edited 6107d ago )

Sorry but no one is taking Microsofts title anytime soon. No company cares about anything but the bottom line but I can't say we've seen so many shady business practices as them. Apple is on its way up with the shenanigans but it will be a long time coming.

Sheikh Yerbouti6107d ago

Get a clue!!

This article isn't about the PC market. It is about mobile computing platforms. Plus, it is more forward looking. Federal regulators are looking at them for the same reasons Microsoft had trouble in the 90's.

Up your reading skills.

HEY! If Arthur gets to be your first mate, is he going to swap your "poop deck"?
lol. jk. jk. but all jokes aside, the Feds are investigating Apple for a number of reasons. Theres more than one way to become a monopoly. They are getting pressure on them from US Senators, like John Kerry in relation to whether or not they should be allowed to keep the iphone exclusive to AT&T. They are gettig pressure from Google, because they had Eric Schmidt removed from Apple's Board, and then the denied the Google Voice APP--without giving an explanation to WHY they did it(ofcourse now they are answering to Uncle Sam about it and statements can be found on their website).

They are a lot of reasons they are being investigated. But you can rest assured, its not for their 10% market share. I just wanted to make that clear. I know this article is focusing on the mobile aspect of things. And what im saying is they owe the expansion of that platform, the success of that platform---to MS.

Apple computers don't crash as much as Microsoft's. I don't see how they can even be compared. Plus Apple doesn't remove black people from their photos. ;-]

evrfighter6107d ago

Apple pc's crash. However post this on the apple forums and it'll be deleted. Censorship is a key tool for Apple's image.

KingKionic 6107d ago

Not really the new ms but there doing a good job right now.

The-Director6107d ago

This is the name of the game, you start as good, young and hip, and then you slowly transform to an evil empire, this is what happened to Microsoft and is happening to Google and Apple.

Szarky6107d ago

Yes they're all evil =/

Apple and Google have changed my life for the better. I use both of their products on a daily basis especially Google for it's search and more recently for it's 3D software, SketchUp.

I must be a corporate zombie. =)

PLAYSTATIONGENRATION6107d ago

Till they get there prices inline with the main stream public..overall there Mac prices are ridiculous

rluvah6107d ago

Mac prices are good for their target market. That's why they are the #1 seller of computers over $1000 + at 66% market share for that price range. Quality and reliablility come with a price. Set an a macpro next to a cheap plastic Dell and you will understand the price difference.

kwyjibo6107d ago

Yes, the Dell is faster and runs more software.

tonsoffun6107d ago

yeah, but they com with windows......

I'm sorry but for me, OSX is worth the price of entry. As a former PC fan, I have to say that OSX is one, if not the best OS out there - far better than the MS counterpart.

NoBias6107d ago

But I can't hate. The 3 main machines I own and use the most is my MacBook Pro, XBox 360 and PlayStation 3.

All of the enemies haha

beardpapa6107d ago

I have to agree with tonsoffun here. Having a thinkpad, a samsung netbook, a dell xps, and a unibody macbook pro, I find myself using the mbp for MacOSX more often than Windows XP/Vista. It has features that Windows 7 is just now trying to implement, and the os itself just makes for a far more productive environment. There are no senseless popups or notifcations, I don't have to look through many options just to disable said-notifications, and spotlight works just so much better and faster than Windows Search. Having also participated in the Windows 7 beta, it's definitely approaching OSX-like interface in terms of an Expose and/or widget features, but it still doesn't feel as intuitive and integrated as it does when using OSX.
