Microsoft's new resolution

Xbox 360 HD requirements dropped?

Developers may no longer be bound to 1280x720 resolution.

In the latest of his regular tech columns for Develop, Black Rock Studio's David Jefferies has suggested that Microsoft has dropped the requirement put in place that demands developers' games made for the 360 feature 1280x720.

In his article Jefferies addresses the relative merits of screen resolution and anti-aliasing – two disciplines that are hard to achieve simultaneously without unrealistic GPU demands.

Microsoft's new resolution

54.2% less.. 540p is the sweet spot

IcyJoker1876079d ago

*goes to play "MLB The Show" in 1080p.

JasonPC360PS3Wii6079d ago

How is that firmware 3.0? Oh Wait, I forgot everytime you turn your PS3 on it freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezes. Hey lets play Killzo......... sorry froze again. Oh well, I'll play Uncharte........ damn froze again. It's ok Droids none of you buy games anyway, I bet those Blu-ray movies still work though.

TheBlackSmoke6079d ago

jason just proves he only knows anything about the PS3 from what he reads on the internet. The internet also told me you have no games worth buying this year and that the 360 is as reliable as a $10 waffle maker.

IcyJoker1876079d ago

Actually only reports came of freezing uncharted, and its a very minor problem happening to a few people unlike NXE

Try again :D

wxer6079d ago (Edited 6079d ago )

At least it only freeze
and mine never froze on me
i just played uncharted and it was fine

but when some one updates his xbox
boom
what you know
RROD

Arthur_6079d ago

...having a requirement for a resolution is bad. Its like saying "the game has to ATLEAST look this good", NOT "the game cant look any better than this".

nightelfmohawk6079d ago

I mean, bots actually think Halo 3 had good graphics, so there's no point in M$ releasing actual HD games.

Whitefox7896079d ago

guess we will see the Xbox 360 going head to head with the Wii! Smart move from MS as they go body and soul into arcade games and casual gamers with the natal thing! PS3 the only Full HD next-gen console will stay their alone!

JsonHenry6079d ago

The PS3 has games with sub-HD video as well, not just the 360.. but I gotta say - TOLD YA SO!

When they mentioned they were only adding a total ~512megs or RAM in both systems I told EVERYONE on this site that high rez and AA were gonna be skimped on because the consoles just don't have the throughput to pull it off.

IcyJoker1876079d ago

Becoming less "next-Gen" by the minute.

TheBlackSmoke6079d ago (Edited 6079d ago )

The damage control and spin in the open zone is nothing short of amazing.

Silellak6079d ago

Did people actually read the article, or are they just posting knee-jerk reactions to the headline?

"As more and more LCDs ship with the full HD resolution of 1920x1080 then this will become less of an issue, but I’ve just had a look on Amazon and all the 26" and 32" Sony and Samsung TVs are still 1366x768.

It’s is for this reason that Microsoft recently retired the TCR insisting on 1280x720. Now we are free to make the trade-off between resolution and image quality as we see fit."

This is really a non-issue. Developers will still make their games look as good as possible, this just gives them more options to do so. Restricting the resolution to 720p didn't make much sense when millions of TVs are 1366x768, and thus the image has to be scaled to fit them anyway.

People truly are making a mountain out of a molehill with this.

RH066079d ago

Microsoft has been getting away with this for years, making us all believe it is better than it actually is. I remember when the PS3 came out and MS was saying that HDMI wasn't the future, and they aren't considering putting it into the 360. They flip flop like pancakes!

rockleex6079d ago

Examples are Halo 3 and COD4.

But developers usually upscale the game so people won't really notice without pixel counting.

I guess now 360 developers don't even have to try and upscale anymore?

Anyways, at least we have assurance that PS3 exclusives will remain native 720p or native 1080p. Thanks to the Cell doing a lot of GPU tasks, when programmers know how to use it, the RSX is free to do a lot more.

raztad6079d ago

There is no a single first party sub-HD game on the PS3. All those sub-HD games are multiformat ports with the exception of MGS4 (1024x768), but Kojima did a very good work with the upscaler.

Future Sony's games are even more demanding graphic wise and they run at least at 720p.

Syronicus6079d ago

I guess we could add, that it is going to stay with the PS3 as well since the 360 is giving up the ghost?

bigboss9116079d ago

I dont get your post..."All those sub-HD games are multiformat ports with the exception of MGS4 (1024x768), but Kojima did a very good work with the upscaler."
Are you saying that (1024x768)is sub-hd, or did misinterpret your post? Cuz im pretty sure that it is hd.My tv is (1366x768p)native and it looks pretty freaking awesome. i can tell between hd and non hd pretty easy.

pixelsword6079d ago (Edited 6079d ago )

1. You can look at it at either Less HD games, or more games in general; either way this is probably due to feedback from developer concerns and may be a strategic move on Microsoft's part to get more indy developers to come to them who may not have the technical ability nor manpower to invest in games that are graphically superior.

2. I am slightly bewildered that developers might be having a hard time developing games for the 360 when the 360 was the one that was supposed to be the easier to program for.

3. I am also aware that the 360 was supposed to be the one that has superior graphical capability, so now I am starting to wonder if graphical capability in terms of effects, resolution in terms of game size and scope, and processing power are being misrepresented or confused with each other when people try to explain the differences betwixt the PS3 and 360. Yes, the 360 can make multiplatform games look better in some spots over the PS3, but could the game be equally powerful and carry such graphical feats? I see games like Lair on the PS3 within the first year of the PS3's life cycle, but games similar to Lair should be apparent by now on the 360.

Yes, I bring up Lair again; but if you got the chance to play that game (and possess the skill-set to fly satisfactory), you will find that the game is really impressive for it's early entry into this gen and in many ways not really matched in terms of using either console in terms of power and graphical capability.

Arsenic136079d ago

Hows that Ghostbusters 720p patch doing?

6079d ago
Gue16079d ago (Edited 6079d ago )

That's exactly why Metal Gear Solid 4 was rendered at the resolution it was, 1024x768. It wasn't that the PS3 couldn't handle the 720p resolution for MGS4 but because that resolution was beneficial for most LCD HDtv's that are 1366x768 to prevent the vertical lines to be up-scaled and cause the image to be even more aliased because the 16:9 aspect ratio was out of focus.

But no, people just told me that I was a fanboy, that didn't know what I was talking about and that I was just defending the game sub-par HD resolution because it was a PS3 exclusive... I love this articles that prove me right at the end. =)

Too bad nobody remembers anymore... =(

kalebgray926079d ago

lmao so its official it might look good but it will join ranks with Nintendo.... M$ taking a huge step toward casual gaming leaving the hardcore gamers that have made them a powerhouse.... coming fall 2010 cooking challenge deluxe 3 in 720p!

umair_s516079d ago

According to Wikipedia 1024 x 720 isn't sub HD.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

I think the Microsoft announcement is , possibly, in line with some of their 1st party game not being able to reach the HD mark to meet the release date.

dabri56079d ago

Did you read the article?

Microsoft removed the requirement to produce all games at native 720P. Does Sony require all games to be made at a specific resolution? <--not trying to prove a point, seriously asking).

Just because they lifted the restriction doesn't mean that every game from now on will be low res. It just means the developers have a choice.

I assume this is the same with Sony.

NoBias6079d ago

Obviously a lot of the big name developers are going to try and push the 360's limits. They know their fans want to play their games in HD. I don't think they're that stupid.

And if this allows more indy devs to put games into the 360 library, I'm all for it! Microsoft and Sony usually have an underlying plan for their business moves and decisions. Let's just see how this one plays out before fanboys start foaming at the mouth... Which unfortunately it already seems too late for that...

Ah Sony only fanboys... The anger... The hilarity...

umair_s516079d ago

I was talking to guys who were saying MGS4 is sub HD

KingME6079d ago

When you say flip, are you talking like Sony did with rumble. Oh...okay then I see what you mean.

TheAntiFanboy6079d ago (Edited 6079d ago )

*sigh* All you moronic fanboys really need to read the article.

GiantEnemyCrab6079d ago

So is it safe to say that Kutaragi was right when he said: " HD gaming starts with the PS3"?
I guess we could add, that it is going to stay with the PS3 as well since the 360 is giving up the ghost? "

How when the 360 has had 720p native games before the PS3 even launched? That was marketing from Sony and only a corporate tool would believe that jive.

People are making this out to be some big deal like the 360 is suddenly incapable of running native 720p or 1080p. It's just not true, if a game looks like sh*t and it's running at a sub-HD resolution the developer will hear about it like they always have.

Hate and irrational comments as always.

MGSR THE HD VERSION6079d ago (Edited 6079d ago )

i honestly couldn't care what the article says.

A majority of developers these days make games at 720p whether people like it or not, 99 percent of EA's games are 720p native, it's cause it's the average 360 naturally puts out anyway.

mass effect2, gears2, bioshock2, street fighter4, Batman AA, Fightnight round 4, Deadspace, shadow complex.....they're all 720p.

raztad6079d ago

@bigboss

Yeah I was saying that 1024x768 (4:3 ratio) is sub-HD , at least is not the standard 720p (1280x720, 16:9 ratio). I read that Wikipedia link and it says that 1024x768 actually is HD. So I stand corrected I guess.

BTW, MGS4 got a very awesome upscaler (up to 1080p) so no wonder why it looks that good on your tv.

f7897906079d ago

Need to put in plenty of RAM next gen. I say 4 gigs. Yes 4 gigs because you can never have enough.

Miss Goblin6078d ago

But Silellak, if you don't drive innovation then it runs you over.

TotalPS3Fanboy6078d ago (Edited 6078d ago )

*Sigh... Xbox 360, the only HD console that doesn't do HD resolution, doesn't have HD storage (BluRay or HD-DVD), and doesn't even truely support HDTV (no HDMI).

siyrobbo6078d ago

Metal gear solid 4 says hi, all 1024x768 of it

TotalPS3Fanboy6078d ago (Edited 6078d ago )

"1.27 -
Metal gear solid 4 says hi, all 1024x768 of it"

But 720P is HD. And MSG4 is 768P which is more than 720P, meaning MGS4 is HD.

Know whats amazing? 2 of the 3 consoles out have your so called "Sub-HD" and those two own the number 1 and number 2 spots :)

rockleex6079d ago (Edited 6079d ago )

But the only HD console(PS3) sells at a faster rate than the not-so-nextgen console(360).

If both of those consoles stay on the market for 10 years each, we obviously know which one is going to sell more. ^_^

Right now, the fastest selling consoles are:

1. Wii
2. PS2
3. PS3

Even VG Chartz says so.

@Jason 360:

some of you on here spend more time worrying over sales than actually playing the games. I know that the most sales brings in many advantages, as far as being the lead platform on multiplats and stuff like that.....but c'mon, too many of you dudes on here pull the sales card way too fast....and it works both ways.....some fellow PS3 supporters always jump the gun to mention how sales are picking up & this and that.......let it be....let the chips fall where they may.

pixelsword6079d ago (Edited 6079d ago )

They are selling more, true; but you can't play sales: neither will sales make a game more fulfilling from the perspective of the player.

TheAntiFanboy6079d ago

All three consoles have sub-HD games.

All Wii games are sub-HD. Halo 3 was sub-HD. Metal Gear Solid 4 was sub-HD. There are a dozen more examples for each of the two HD consoles.

If you disagree with this post, you are disagreeing with FACTS, solid, concrete, verifiable FACTS, thus you are WRONG, FALSE, a LIAR, INCORRECT. Congratulations for being wrong, fanboys.

GiantEnemyCrab6079d ago

You must of hated MGS4 since it's sub 720p.

You can't have a good game unless it's native 720p or above! /sarc

Yes, now the 360 has suddenly been rendered incapable of running 720p or 1080p native.

Don't be a tool.

Gamer11116079d ago

good thing HD is HD....i mean well i don't sit there and count the pixels....as long as any game looks good on any systems its cool

F N A Pepper6079d ago

fanboy garbage, both systems looks fantastic on my plasma so who cares. i love the ps3 and the 360 and by the way i've read charts that have said the 40 percent of the buyers of ps3 buy just for blue ray and don't even own more than one game on the system but again i was just putting what info i have read out there i really don't care as long as i can play on whatever system i feel like playing on and it plays well and looks good i'm kosher.
