Sony: Will 3D TV Sell?

Sony, which has failed at most of its new initiatives over the last two years, needs something to work. It's PS3 has sold poorly. Prices for it digital cameras and TV screens are under pressure from firms in Korea and China. It's new e-reader is competing in a market which includes Amazon's Kindle which is a well-marketed leader, endorsed by Oprah.

Sony has decide that its next best chance to recover its financial performance and reputation for inventiveness is 3D TV. The question is whether anyone wants it.

The 3D products operates that way that older 3D cinema does, giving the viewer the illusion of watching content as if it were in the room with the him. The technology has several drawbacks, none of which can be easily overcome.

Seriously, i stopped reading at "ps3 has sold poorly". DO SOME RESEARCH you stupid blogger. Since launch ps3 has sold better then 360 and at a higher price point. So if ps3 has sold poorly, 360 must be...doomed?

Zedux6106d ago (Edited 6106d ago )

yet another M$ fanboy article! Did Blu-ray fail? NO! Did their new camcoders and cameras fail? NO! Did their high quality products fail? NO! Did their games fail? NO!
Go away fanboy go write about how you love so much your xbox hardware and exclusives!

Alcon Caper6106d ago (Edited 6106d ago )

Douglas A. McIntyre, the author of the article, is the Editor-in-Chief and Publisher of Financial Times Magazine. He graduated from Harvard magma cum laude and has advised on Wall Street for years.

When anyone writes an article that states any negativity towards Sony, you automatically label the author as a "fanboy."

Fanyboy?

Gimme a break...

nycredude6106d ago

Alcon Caper

You act like the guy is your boyfriend or something. What he went to Harvard, who cares. He isn't a genius! Last time I check Wall Street was hanging on by a thin thread, so I guess he is dumber than you think if he was advising Wall Street.

Fact is the article is full of BS, and no amount of "higher" education will excuse that. What is this guy's credentials when it comes to 3d technology? Do you honestly think he knows more about hardware and software tech than Sony does?

Shadow Flare6106d ago

If he's so smart and such a good journalist, he wouldn't have wrote 'ps3 has sold poorly'. He would have checked the fiscal hardware sales numbers from sony and microsoft, and would have noticed that in 2007 ps3 outsold 360, and in 2008 they sold the same. All the while ps3 being considerably more expensive. So no, ps3 has not sold poorly, it has sold fantastic considering. The fact 360 hasn't trounced ps3 in yearly sales shows that the 360 is selling poorly. So who cares if he went to Harvard. By that 'ps3 is selling poorly' statement, he made himself look like a fool. Nay, i mistook him for a blogger

bunbun7776106d ago

"The question is whether anyone wants it."

IMO this is not reporting in the least-- he is actually framing the typical reader-- The question is..... bullshi----

Everyone wants 3d! Everyone wants HD! Not everyone can afford it, and yes there will always be the few that hold on to the older technologies, that's cool that's free will, but given that this is an entertainment medium we are talking about-- one that is primarily visual--- is 3d really the question?

I would love to see James Cameron come into this guy's office and bitc-- slap him right across the face. Seriously.

labaronx6105d ago

no one's questioning his education or background but he seems to be ill informed about the subject. Mitsubishi, Panasonic, LG, and a few other manufactures have already been looking and working on 3d TV way before sony's announcement.

Sony's Failures?

Blu ray: i was under the impression was doing well... but more to the point bluray is the by product of a group of companies not just sony... when it shows profit it's broken down by how much each company gets but when something bad happens it's sony's failure...

PS3/ PSP: doing fine by most standards
E-reader: 3 new ones brought to the market getting much praise from tech gurus

OlED TV: Sony was first to the market.... lg and panasonic are following suite

But back to my original statement, as someone who has taken argumenative writing, the main rule my "non-harvard" but lsu writing professor (Stanford Grad) told us that whatever our argument is we should always have facts to back them up...... if we didnt "F".

Alcon Caper6105d ago

I only cited his credentials to convince others to approve the article. It has been approved. It is a valid op ed piece. The whole point of an op ed is to state an opinion.

It is well written, grammatically correct and according to N4G Guidelines, "Opinion pieces are also OK as long as they are written by well established websites or people..."

Way better then that translated crap that no one can read.

randomwiz6105d ago (Edited 6105d ago )

Well, its stupid to approve this article since it doesn't have anything to do with ps3. This is about Sony's next big thing on tv's, not gaming related, except for one line in the article about ps3.

On topic: You'd have to be a fool to think only Sony would do R&D on 3D, while Samsung, Panasonic, Sharp, etc, sit back and relax. A lot of DLP tv's today support 3D, mostly from Samsung and Mitsubishi.

SoapShoes6105d ago

Well his credentials make this article worse. You would think someone with his credentials would bother to do some research and post correct information rather than what he has heard on the internet.

Alcon Caper6105d ago

i'll post what i posted below:

Sony posted a $2.57 billion loss last March with the PS3. This is the information that financial analysts look at...not number of consoles sold.

SoapShoes6105d ago

"Sony, which has failed at most of its new initiatives over the last two years, needs something to work." is simply not true. He's painting Sony's picture as a failure but it's not. You can say that Sony has lost money on the PS3 and have a point in one area, but that is not the whole of Sony. Sorry, but this guy has posted incorrect information.

bunbun7776105d ago

thanks-- but seriously-- just because he is well written and grammatically correct ... do you agree with him that 3d is something that really needs to questioned? Its like Cartman trying to talk about the Coon to Stan and Kyle-- this guy is opining in such a way that it makes him seem....well didactic.
And I'm sorry-- but I am very leery of anyone that uses opinion to try and 'learn' me-- where are his well written facts?

leeger6105d ago

being a harvard graduate and a magna cumlaude prevents you from being a fanboy.

Anon19746105d ago

Parroted again and again and again by news outlets and bloggers who just can't take the minute it would take to click on official sales to see the PS3 has outsold the 360 since it launched worldwide.

Let me guess, if you check this guy's posts, not one will mention "slow 360" sales despite it being outsold these past 2 1/2 years by the PS3. I'd put money on it.

edgeofblade6105d ago

I think Sony can sell 3D TVs... IF people want to wear 3D glasses. I honestly see 3D as the same as the jump from SD to HD: they are going to have to sell the compatible content more than they need to sell the hardware, despite the requirement of the hardware coming first.

cmrbe6105d ago

So what if he is a top Harvard Graduate?. There is no point if you don't use common sense. Look at the previous Bush administration. Most of them are suppose to be top graduates and look where the US is right now?. You can be Einstein but if you don't use common sense you are basically a lame duck in real life.

Real Gambler6105d ago (Edited 6105d ago )

Yikes, you must come from Harvard as well, and got the same financial courses.... One of you must be wrong...

Douglas: "ps3 has sold poorly"
You: "Sony posted a $2.57 billion loss last March with the PS3."

If the PS3 would have sold better than it did, the loss would have been bigger since they have been selling them at a lost. (loosing money on each PS3 sold)

So either you're right, and most of the lost is attributed to PS3 selling so well. Or Douglas is right, and the loss is not because of the PS3 (so you're totally wrong)...

No matter what, even if opinions are ok, this is News 4 Gamers, not "Opinions from a guy I would not buy anything based on his recommendation... The PS3 sold 10 millions per year, and any TV, PVR, DVD manufacturer would dream to have "bad" sales like that. If this is truly a financial advisor, I really pity people who buy stock, based on his recommendations!

Anon19746105d ago

Kaz recently confirmed in an interview with The Times of London that the PS3, as platform, has been profitable for the last fiscal year. So often people look at the entire division, which has posted losses, and figure that must mean the PS3 is causing losses. It means no such thing.

HolyOrangeCows6105d ago (Edited 6105d ago )

''Sony, which has failed at most of its new initiatives over the last two years, needs something to work''

I stopped here. This an ignorant person, obviously.
and he talks like Sony is starting an entire sector dedicated to 3D.

Another American writer who thinks Sony is a bad company.
Wallstreet is undoubtably paying him in bottle caps, and he can't afford quality products. Thus his bitterness.

@1.10
That's the Playstation portion of their company, not Sony itself that had the loss.
Sony themselves have been profitable.

Sony's recent ventures?

Their phones are doing well
They have the best e-reader on the market.
Most high tech tv's
Well known for high quality product.
PS3 selling well
Blu-ray doing well
PSP at 50 million+ units
PSN a huge success,

BUT let's forget about them... and talk BETAMAX... lol sony lost against VHS. Also Walkman, one of the greatest product on the market and really statrted the mobile music era.

Shadow Flare6106d ago

It's really weird you say that. I just realised i'm reading your comment through my sony ericsson phone, while listening to my OLED walkman, through my awesome sony headphones i just bought yesterday. All of them are awesome. Especially my walkman and headphones which together sound incredible. When i get home, i'll be playing my ps3 and watching it through my 40" sony bravia, through my sony home cinema kit, and thats no joke. All these products are some of the best things i've ever bought

randomwiz6105d ago (Edited 6105d ago )

What I really liked back in 07 was that Sony showcased a flexible OLED screen.

FLEXIBLE OLED!!!

I thought that was going to be used in the psp2

Szarky6105d ago

Sony loyalist to the max.

I like Sony but you must LOVE sony.

crillyconlig6105d ago

betamax failed to gain make it into the home, but it was a big success in tv and movie production before the CD came along

evrfighter6105d ago (Edited 6105d ago )

Samsung is spanking Sony in the T.V market.
Apple all but destroyed the Sony Walkman.
Sony Erriccson just cut 2,000 jobs due to a decline in sales.
only about 2-4% of pc's sold today have a blu-ray player.
PS3 has gained no ground on the 360 since launch.
PSP profits were mostly eaten up by the ps3's failure to net a profit.
Being able to connect to an online service is Not really something to brag about.

And finally. Well known for high quality products title is becoming less and less as long as Samsung sticks to their game. They are becoming more loved everyday as they aren't exploiting their consumer in an apple-like fashion.

All in All. Sony can no longer claim to be the king in electronics. However I do hope they can make a glorious comeback. When a company that big is knocked off their high horse. They usually return with a vengeance with higher quality lower priced products. It's a win win for everyone.

Worry about the ps3 sales first Sony even your stock holders are sharpening their knifes.

simplyRealistic186106d ago

wow your a sad man, did sony rape you or something, i guess that the affect of not having enough exclusive for your failbox 360 that you have to comment on everything ps3 related

randomwiz6105d ago

just ignore him, he's a no life 7 year old that is on n4g 24/7

Man_of_the_year6105d ago

Did MS rape you is a better question.

"i guess that the affect of not having enough exclusive for your failbox 360"

simplyRealistic186106d ago

i personally don't this they should focus on 3d tv yet, at least wait a while, in like a year in a half they should come out with an OLED 3d tv

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle23d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

PlayStation legend Shuhei Yoshida says Jim Ryan fired him because he didn't listen to him

Why did Sony push Shuhei Yoshida out of his role leading PlayStation's first-party games? He'd overseen some huge successes. Well, apparently, he didn't listen.

Relientk7731d ago

Yeah I can see that for sure. Shuhei Yoshida should have been in charge not Jim Ryan.

Cacabunga31d ago

It should be free highway for him now.. but Sony are too stupid to see this, especially that moron Hulst

S2Killinit31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Wtf why all that anger. PlayStation is dominating on every level. Besides I think there is a little more to hiring a CEO than just who is available. Its not like its a athlete your team wants to buy.

neutralgamer199230d ago

S2Killinit

live service failures, chasing trends, closing studios. yes dominating

Cacabunga30d ago

Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.

Last gen we got Uncharted 4 Lost Legacy and TLOU2 from ND alone.

This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality

1nsomniac30d ago (Edited 30d ago )

..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....

...Really???

PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.

Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.

medman30d ago

Hulst is a disaster......

He would've done the same thing and fire Jim Ryan and Shuhei would be the villain. Why?
Because Elite creates the narrative and distraction for gamers, users and citizens.

Outside_ofthe_Box31d ago

More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.

robtion30d ago

Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade). He is an actual gamer and is in touch with what gamers want (creative, fun games, not GaaS and agenda pushing). He also seems like a genuinely nice guy if you watch some interviews. Of course they got rid of him.

darthv7231d ago

Makes you wonder if MS even thought about hiring him after Phil and Sarah were leaving. He certainly couldn't make their situation any worse.

Agent7531d ago

Microflop. After Windows XP and Xbox 360, it all went floppy.

S2Killinit31d ago

Floppy 😆
No pun intended

badz14931d ago

Yoshida for President! Jim Ryan was and always be a hack! Sony should get Shu back

Lightning7731d ago

All the gamer/consumer lead heads are gone across PS and Xbox. shuhei gone phil's gone (questionable) but gone. The future of gaming is somewhat uncertain across the board.
