Top 5 Game Stories

Overmind Writes "Gamers are a hard bunch to please. We can always find something wrong with a game. ALWAYS. Yet one feature of a game that seems to be forgotten about, at least in the crowd I talk with / see, is the story. A lot of people I talk to don't care about stories in games, some people I talk to haven't even completed or even touched the single player in some games and just went straight to the multiplayer. No matter what way you look at it there will always be some people who just don't care about the narrative of things, and that is just not acceptable."

Fail list IMO. No MGS, FF or Mass Effect.

Did you read the end of the article?

"Now obviously, I didn’t add a lot of games you may have added, like, oh I don’t know, Mass Effect, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid etc, but that is because this is MY list."

The best story I've ever seen in any game I've ever played in my 20+ years of experience is w/o a doubt Planescape: Torment. This isn't "best game evar" or anything, but the meat-- the story --imo is second to none.

FFVII, MGS. These have epic stories as well. What makes me rate them not as high is the fact that they are seemingly complex for the sake of complexity.

Mass Effect is only just beginning. The first game told its story well and the best dynamic was Saren and Sovereign. Beyond that it's cool, but not best of anything right now.

SotC is interesting because it's minimalism at its best in a game. I wouldn't say the story is incredible because of it though.

Warcraft, despite my feelings about the franchise is an admirable addition. It's practically it's own campaign setting by now. The lore is very deep, a lot deeper than your average game ever gets so I admire it. But so too do I admire Elder Scrolls. It has only a few games, but the lore is incredibly complex and deep at the risk of being completely optional to read about in-game.

And MGS should be there as well.

Philip J Fry6112d ago

It may be his list, but I have a feeling he has not played many games. My favorite game story is Bioshock followed by Mass Effect. To put Assassin's Creed on the list just lunacy to me. That is just MY opinion.

@1.1 and 1.2: First of all, who the hell is this guy and how important he is to defend his opinion? Secondly, why should we gife a damn about his opinion? It's the same as with me.
You shouldn't give a f*ck about my opinion as much as his.

The difference? I didn't went through all the trouble creating a blog using existing blogsystem script. It's a gaming blog and this entry is an opinion of a... Student?

And look at the list. It kinda reminds me as if it's written by a kid who grewn up on Jak series, played some recent games like AC(while story isn't great at all, it's just OK) and UC is a WoW geek and added Shadow of Colossus cause it's cool to love this game recently.

Common sense dudes, common sense. OR, let me quote Philip J. Fry: MY opinion.

WARCRAFT? Come on now, is this article serious?

1. Metal Gear Solid Series
2. Final Fantasy 7

2FootYard6112d ago

My list would include MGS, Bioshock, Mass Effect, FF7, and Chrono Cross.

JonnyBigBoss6112d ago

Chrono Cross/Chrono Trigger and Mass Effect have terrific stories. I'd add those to my list as well.

Tehdaza6112d ago
