IGN: GC 2009: Best of Gamescom 2009 Winners

IGN's adventures in Cologne might now be a distant memory but, ladies and gentlemen, it's time to dim the lights, shush the crowd and rattle the golden envelope. With eight heaving halls, almost a quarter of a million visitors and countless games on display, Gamescom 2009 was an unmitigated success - in terms of size, plus the sheer quality and creativity on display.

Mass Effect 2 will be an epic, awesome game. Congrats Bioware on the future win.

This will be the 360's best game in 2010 easily, Splinter Cell and Alan Wake be damned.

Edit: Why the disagrees?
To the 360 fans: Come on nothing looks even close to the scale of ME2, SC:C and Alan Wake look good but they're no ME2. Plus, its Bioware. 'nuff said.

To the PS3 fans: If you actually read the whole article, you'll see that IGN thinks the PS3 has the best line-up of games. There ya go.

Greywulf5985d ago (Edited 5985d ago )

a "lineup" that includes multiplatform games is not quite the same as needing to only own a device to play 1 game.

ME2 is multiplatform. It doesn't have some amazing scale that isn't = detailed characters and static backgrounds with nothing to interact with or do. its 2009, and ME2 hardly looks 1.5 from the first one. You want to see some impressive scale? Is there something in the unreal-ez-blur backgrounds that im missing? Some huge scale that the unreal engine is known for.. I dunno...

Splinter Cell has been completely redone from what everyone saw years ago, yet it still some how retains its "OH MY GOD THIS WILL BE EPIC" attitude which is hilarious. Pretty much they could say they cancelled it yesterday, and they just did a new drawing, and it would still be "OH MY GOD EPIC! DAY 1!"

Alan wake, a game that was advertised to be this huge physics/weather/sandbox engine is now no longer a sandbox game, and looks a ton like Alone in the Dark, with the only footage anyone seeing being you shooting zombies while holding a flare. Which is of course, AMAZING.. :-|.

If you're excited for ^^^^^^^ above, yay? But don't pretend its an amazing lineup considering 1 of the games is multiplatform, and the other two have been gimped in development. And simply cant compete on any level technically/visually with any PS3 exclusives coming out.

When you cant even compare screens/videos to anything else to claim that its amazing/better, especially the previous version, you kinda are in an odd position. Its like when a starving man is thrown a cracker. You think its the best food in the world. Alan Wake & Splinter cell also have been in the "BUH BUH BUH" Lineup for the 360 for the past years. Not exactly shocking developments. Crackdown2 & L4D.. oh wait multiplat again. Crackdown2 should be cool.

Now, when people say the 360 has no games. Its not a literal meaning, sure there are games, but the lineup of 09 was a complete joke. Look at 2009, and what you've played exclusively this year. Ninja Blade, Halo Wars? Race Pro? Velvet Assassin? Much like 2008, you have to wait until the end of the year+ to play a handful of decent titles--maybe. Same as 2008, same as 2009, and looks to be the same for 2010.

SevWolf5985d ago (Edited 5985d ago )

I agree with you I think that Mass Effect 2 will be the 360's best game of These two years(why these TWO years you ask?...cause its gonna be THAT good), I mean dont get me wrong Alan Wake and SC: Conviction are looking to be amazing, but ME 2 is like ME(which was the main reason I bought my 360) on drugs after going to the gym and drinking a bottle of healthy orange juice..lol
But I also agree with IGN the PS3 does have the best line up for these two years
@ Greywulf: you're right, if I could I would've played it on my PC, but my PC sucks @ss, it cant even run the Trine demo :(.....but WHAT THE H3LL does your comment have to do with swiftshot's

Arthur_5985d ago

Ok cool. but i hope this next one is easier to get into than the first---it just seemed to drag on in the beginning. :( But yes, once things got hopping, it was fun for all.

SnuggleBandit5985d ago

Quote from article

"Poor Sony – it's easy to forget, in the wake of the colossal non-event that was the unveiling of the PS3 Slim, that the company had an unrivaled line-up of top-tier exclusive games on show - a line-up easily outshining its rivals. From sure-fire big-hitters like Gran Turismo 5 and the breathtaking Uncharted 2, through more leftfield fare such as Heavy Rain and EyePet, there's no publisher around that can offer the depth and breadth that Sony currently can. No matter where you stand on its ever-increasing hardware configurations, there's no doubting that, when it comes to software, right now Sony is second to none."

RememberThe3575985d ago

lol I pressed agree with SevWolf, then BAM! The best of your comment pops up. You wanna through an "edit" in there. lol

On topic: I can't wait for this freakin game. No matter what platform it's going to be on, I'm going to play it. And since it's going to be on the 360 I'm going to play it on that.

SevWolf5985d ago

@ greywulf's edit: like I said before EVERYTHING you said about ALL the games you mentioned IS true....but what does "EVERYTHING you said" have to do with swiftshot's comment?

N4PS3G5985d ago

@Greywulf

looks to be the same for 2010? lol

Splinter Cell: Conviction -Q1
Mass Effect 2 -Q1
Crackdown 2- Spring
Alan Wake- Spring
Fable III -Q4
Halo: Reach -Q4

and those are only the confirmed for 2010 .... letting out the obvious Gears 3 announcement and Mistwalker confirmed TGS game. Don't try to cover the sun with your finger pal ;)

Doctor_Doom5985d ago (Edited 5985d ago )

@ N4PS3G

I'm sure RARE have some new titles coming in 2010.

;)

@ Butt Hurt fanboys

Get over it guys. ME2 is going to be the GOTY

:)

TheBand1t5985d ago

God of War III

Gran Turismo 5 (if it doesn't release this year)'

White Knight Chronicles

M.A.G.

Resistance 3 (with Ratchet this year, it'll be Resistance in 2010.)

Any one with a lick of common sense (apparently not you) would have said "Wow. Both systems got some pretty kickass software in 2010."

mal_tez925985d ago

I can't believe I haven't played the first one yet.

Bnet3435985d ago

Can't wait for Mass Effect 2. My most anticipated game for 2010. I'm playing the first one at the moment.

SupaPlaya5985d ago (Edited 5985d ago )

I don't understand why get so many disagree either. It's your opinion ME2 will be best game for 360 this year. You didn't write anything too far fetched.

It'll be like me writing that Uncharted 2 will be the best game for PS3 this year. Geez not everybody has the same taste, but are all the disagrees necessary?

I guess people just can't stand someone saying something positive about the "other camp" (which is ridiculous).

Back on topic, for PS3 I still like the UC2 trailer better. It is just too beautiful:

Cold 20005985d ago

Greywulf must be the most butthurt PS3 fanboy on this site.

rockleex5985d ago (Edited 5985d ago )

The Last Guardian
God of War 3
Heavy Rain
Final Fantasy XIII (outside Japan)
Final Fantasy Versus XIII (in Japan)

I'm not saying which game is gonna be GOTY, but it definitely won't be an easy fight.

I hope The Last Guardian wins though. ^_^

Edit: Why do the 360 fans keep trying to bait the PS3 fans? Calling them butthurt, etc. The only person who's said anything bad about the 360 is Greywulf.

Mass Effect 2 won from IGN. Great. But don't try to turn this into a stupid console war.

Heavy Rain's Gamescom 2009 trailer is totally awesome.

I disagree with the DS winner, imo it should be Scribblenauts instead of LoZ:Spirit Tracks.

EDIT: Wow. I got four disagrees for saying absolutely nothing bad. I didnt even say anything bad about ME2 coz I'll be playing it on PC just like ME. :|

SupaPlaya5985d ago

It may have to do with your name. I agreed with your comment though.

rockleex5985d ago

Lol, you seriously didn't say anything bad.

Unless people are offended by merely the mentioning of Scribblenauts or Heavy Rain?

Masamori Sumimura5985d ago

Mass effect 2 is shaping up to be one of the Greatest games of 2010. A must have for every Xbox360 owner.

PS: watch some say that IGN is biased. smh

coolirisGB5985d ago

Others say IGN is honest and do not fear the SDF. ME2 is on my must have list. I got two ME1 profiles waiting for ME2

SevWolf5985d ago

IGN have been honest/non-biased lately. I mean all they said was true...ME 2 was the best game there, closely follow by HR, and they said that Sony are the best publishers with the best line up of games, which is also true...I am slowly coming to trust IGN again

TheBand1t5985d ago (Edited 5985d ago )

Not biased at all, especially when they consider SCE to be the best publisher. I mean, if they made that decision they're obviously not afraid of XDF, right?

Try harder next time, k? I mean, at least when you had your Really_duh account, Cooliris, you put up a mean fight.

WMW5985d ago

i think you should read the quote z-hayden posted and you will see why noone will say that ign is biased

SupaPlaya5985d ago

will always be biased for somebody. As long as they don't favor someone's system of choice, they are biased.

They will always be biased by that definition.

rockleex5985d ago

Although I would have wanted Heavy Rain to win.

I don't condemn them for anticipating Mass Effect 2 more than Heavy Rain.

It also seems that IGN has a balanced staff crew, to the point where they'll never write BS FUD articles. I hope.

Excellent choice from IGN.Mass Effect 2 does look awesome

Xbox360Elite5985d ago

Mass Effect 2 surpasses CGI graphics and only on Xbox360.

aldesko5985d ago

"only on Xbox360"

...and PC... and possibly PS3.

Saaking5985d ago

stupid bot, it's also on PC and once you finish beta testing for us, it'll come to PS3 just like SCC.

Best Adventure Game of 2025

VGChartz's Lee Mehr: "While not carrying the same heft it enjoyed long ago, last year was one of the adventure genre's most commercially-successful years in this century. A Telltale-esque adventure eclipsing 3 million sales in three months would be the talk of the town were it not for another adventure game hurdling over 10 million sales in two. Though not all finalists reached those heights, each did share a greater amount of spotlight compared to similar titles within their respective sub-genres.

Past any sales thresholds and popularity contests, 2025 also deserves credit for its creativity; the last time our entire shortlist consisted exclusively of new IPs was for Best Adventure Game of 2020. An impressive year for the genre, with even greater potential ahead."
