Blu-ray Will Never Replace DVDs in PCs Says Analyst

Less than four percent of new computers have Blu-ray drives.

As we all know, Blu-ray has become an increasingly popular format, sales of both Blu-ray discs and players are higher than ever, and the format war is long behind us, but when it comes to PCs, Blu-ray has a long way to go.

With DVD drives now standard on modern PCs, Blu-ray drives are surprisingly low in the mix. Installed on only 3.6% of new computers shipped this year, consumers seem hard pressed for a reason to make the switch.
iSuppli's senior analyst Michael Yang believes that the price of Blu-ray content is a factor, but not the only factor. "The cost issue is amplified by the fact that the library of content is so small that there really isn't a reason for users to switch at the moment".

There will probably be a new format out before Blu Ray really takes off.

25 GB of storage on a disk is useless for 99.9% of the PC market right now.

TheColbertinator6094d ago

Pandamobile is correct since most PC games can just be installed from 3 or more separate discs. Not to mention PCs have standard hard drives that go far beyond any PS3 model in terms of HDD space. And most PC games can simply be installed through Steam.

PC games wont need blu-rays for a long time.Consoles are a different story

blackbeld6094d ago

Never say never...... Just wait BLU-RAY is the new standard medium...

Only M$ analyst talking stupid ...

jmare6094d ago

Didn't "analysts" at one time say the earth was flat and at the center of the universe?

PinkUni6094d ago

Didn't "analysts" at one time say DVDs Will Never Replace CDs?

darthv726094d ago (Edited 6094d ago )

No. Never did I ever hear any analyst say that. You need to be using the same content type when doing that statement. Ex: dvd replace video tape and cd replace audio cassettes.

edit: sorry man. I totally forgot you were referring to the use in pc. My bad. When you look at it like that, I still never heard an analyst say that. It was only going to benefit storage because hdd sizes werent as gigantic as they are now for the price per mb/gb of storage.

BulletToothtony6094d ago

but blurays hold 50gb and soon they're gonna hold 100gb even 200gb we're downloading way too much junk and we need the space.. with digital cameras being 12mgpxls and digital hd cameras hdd get full pretty fast..

It's bound to come standard in MOST computers, unless people keep buying external hdds, i put a 1tb hdd on my computer and have an external 1tb hdd.. they're both half way full.. lol that in only 6 months.. i NEED bluray sorry..

Godmars2906094d ago (Edited 6094d ago )

Probably would have if there had been a competing technology at the time.

And yes, HD-DVD is dead, but that doesn't stop MS from pushing DDL like they owned it.

Hell, they probably do own several applications within it.

Ju6094d ago

Prices down (like a BD drive would cost $10 more over a DVD when you order a PC) and games coming out on BD. Done.

droid and bot6094d ago (Edited 6094d ago )

you guys take this way too early
first of all
blueray is like what 3 years old

it needs time
it needs to be working faster and being cheaper

and if blueray didn't make it to PC's
there is alot of other areas where bluera is realy needed
- video gaming for eg.
im not talking about PC gaming
but look at most of the xbox games now, they com in more that one DVD9

- movies
- back up's
and alot more

it just need time
and if it didn't make it to PC's
it well be the next media format
like movies and games that is

but same thing said before about DVD'S. CD'S. and blah blah blah
but look what happened at the end

the funny thing is
when DVD first came out
every one was like "that's a movies format"
and the same thing was said about it
but now DVD is everywhere

edit:
just one thing just came cross my mind
if blueray didn't made it to every PC
its still be needed in a lot of places
e.g. companies and games or move developers
so it well be very useful to this slice of users

"Didn't "analysts" at one time say the earth was flat"

This is a common myth, humans have known about the shape of the earth for thousands of years now.

raztad6094d ago (Edited 6094d ago )

Mankind history is not as long as several thousand years. That is another myth.

BTW, it doesnt make sense to get a DVD drive when BD is coming cheap nowadays. More storage space/dvd compatible/BD compatible FTW.

4pocalyps36094d ago (Edited 6094d ago )

and yet some people in he world still believe the earth is flat.....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

on topic: tbh i don't give a rats ass what an analyst says. once blu ray drives go a bit more cheaper as well as blank blu rays. i will be purchasing one for my pc.

Kushan6094d ago

"Mankind history is not as long as several thousand years. That is another myth."

Really, now? And how did you figure that one out? Here's a hint - the year is 2009. Even assuming mankind began at year 0, that still gives us TWO thousand years. Note that I said "for thousands of years", not "for several thousand years".
Now lets add in the fact that mankind has existed for a couple of thousand years before that - a quick look on wikipedia at the history of Ancient Egypt details how there were many small tribes dotted around the place up to 5500 BC - so that's about 7000 years right now, give or take. Even if you're a Creationist, you still believe that the earth is approximately 7000 years old, so what the hell have YOU been smoking?
Mankind HAS, in fact, been around for "Several thousand years".

Now, for all those people who disagreed with me about the whole "flat earth" thing, take a read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Here's an extract: "The Myth of the Flat Earth or Flat Earth mythology refers to the modern misconception that the prevailing cosmological view during the Middle Ages saw the Earth as flat, instead of spherical. During the early Middle Ages, many scholars maintained the spherical viewpoint first expressed by the Ancient Greeks."

HolyOrangeCows6094d ago

And CDs will NEVER replace Floppys! They're too expensive to produce right now!

*A couple years pass, CDs become standard*

raztad6094d ago

@Kushan

Nope, it is not several thousand years old. Dont believe everything is written. There are a lot of forgeries in the history as is commonly known. If you are interested I can recommend you, privately, a good book for your reading pleasure.

masterg6094d ago

Ofcourse it will.
When the price goes way down on a bluray drive.
I remember my first DVD recorder drive. It was over $600.
Now they are like $40 here in Denmark.

masterg6094d ago (Edited 6094d ago )

@raztad
"Mankind history is not as long as several thousand years. That is another myth. "
How on earth did you get agrees with that... My god.

You're joking right??
Mankind has been around for more than 200,000 years.
We started to evolve from apes millions of years ago.

HolyOrangeCows6094d ago (Edited 6094d ago )

.....are hilarious. Neither one can prove their theories in the slightest.

EDIT: What Kush says is win, though.

masterg6094d ago

@HolyOrangeCows

LOL. So to you millions of years which have left millions of scientific evidence means nothing. Visit a museum for god sake, you might just learn something. Here's some bonus info. Once the earth had dinosaurs too.

evrfighter6094d ago (Edited 6094d ago )

DVD's for storage are already being replaced but it's not by blu-ray

Nearly everything we own from consoles, dvd players, blu-ray players, car stereos have USB ports.

USB drives are only getting faster and faster. It's a huge technological advantage that blu-ray's do not have. I guarantee that most of you already have em. It's just funny how you forget about that tech when the ps3 is involved.

Lightsaber6094d ago (Edited 6094d ago )

"Mankind history is not as long as several thousand years. That is another myth."

dude seriously are you retard do you not know that there are places in the world outside the USA. Palermo city in italy is nearly 3000 years old. The Egyptian pyramids are around 5000 years old . Heres your sign.

Anyways back to the topic I can think of 3 Reason of why blu ray isnt used for pc.

1. Is price you can go to wal mart and pick up a stand alone Blu ray player for less then 100 dollars. Blu ray drives (a far as I know) start at around 200 dollars.

2. No real use for a Blu ray. 1st there are very few people that every need to transfer 50gb of data. If you want to back up info you can do it now a small xternal HDD these have a lot more space and they are cheaper (depending on size).

3. As for watching movies (see 1) on your pc very few people do it (legally). Why watch on a 20in pc screen when you can watch on a 52 in tv with surruoud sound (yes I know you can hook a pc up to a tv but not many do).

its just cheaper and easier to buy a stand alone blu ray player or ps3 to watch movies.

cliffbo6094d ago (Edited 6094d ago )

this same argument once applied to cd`s i don`t see many cd`s anymore!

this is just like saying dvd won`t replace vhs. lol

ps

BD for pc cost less than $100 for readers but more for writers.

potenquatro6094d ago (Edited 6094d ago )

If they ever become standard I mean. Analyst say this every time though

When they do then yeah, BD will be the obvious choice since it is the best option for larger needs.

SuperStrokey11236094d ago

This just in: Analyst sticks foot in mouth

Xbox360Elite6094d ago

Obviously Blu-ray is not required at this moment DVD is sufficient for the time being.Who in their right mind would want to pay royalty costs to Sony.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio6d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing6d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster926d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit6d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing6d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster926d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
