Hell yes it was. I have truly enjoyed the whole ride. We all know with electronics. They are always changing and advancing. So price cuts and slim models were inevitable. So yes it was a great buy. To me, it would have been far worse to be a gamer sitting there on the outside of the PS3 world and just hearing all the cool things it does and great games along the way. But, I've been a PS gamer since the very launch of the PS1. So call it what you will. But I stand behind a product that delivers time and time again. In both reliability and game content. It was a no brainer to stay with a true and tested company that most all of us have enjoyed over the last decade or so. Maybe that is why I happen to own 2 P1's, 2 PS2's and 2 PS3's ( 80g's ).

I've enjoyed my PS3 since I got it. Without it, I wouldn't have many good games to play the past 2 years (PC hasn't been doing well). I guess I'd prefer to have a slim but I'm more than satisfied.

YLoD'ed on me two years later with over 200 WU in the Folding@Home program. So that was 1600 hours + of use when it passed. Got an exact replacement from Sony.

I originally got mine around 3months after launch the 60gb version, had it for a few months hardly used it and the optical stopped working. Took it back was offered the 40gb I said no either 60gb or money back so got my £425 back.

So after a long time I started looking for a mint but used 60gb finally got one and this is interesting it makes less noise and gives out less heat than my previous 60gb...Interesting that.

I think the original 60gb PS3 is lush and is the full system in my eyes the new slim puts me off because well it looks rushed from the outside. The design and logo etc just seems as though someone got stuck on what to do and just said i cant do any better just let it out of the door.

Overall tech wise i am very impressed with the slim i think the true heart of what the PS3 is ly's with the original backwards compatible, shiny finish with chrome, 4 usb and memory slots edition :-D

I got a 60gb PS3 for £425 in the summer of '07, shortly after purchasing a 20gb 360, which was still quite early for people buying PS3s in the UK, some of my friends also got PS3s but soon sold them off just to keep a 360 because the PS3 had no games, apparently.

I sort of laugh at them now, because since Uncharted has come out, exclusive after exclusive has been pouring out and now a few of them want one again. Ironic.

Anyway, glad I got a PS3 before and not now? Yep, really happy to be involved with something that has constantly evolved to become a better product and playing the games that made it's image.

My PS3 is my most prized possession, also, the fact it plays most the catelogue of PS2 games except games that demand the EE.

It is by far the closest thing to Kutaragi sans's initial vision of what the PS3 should be. Each "revision" since he has been gone was to reduce cost by removing features and make the system cheaper to produce.

Slim looks nice in person but in pictures isnt that great..but its still worth the buy since your buying it to play game u not goin to sit down and start at your sytem..lol..I got the 60GB PS3 and its worth it i can afford it and im loving BC..The features that everyone wants so bad

is simplicity/hassle free. I hookup my external HD and just use it as a media player. If i want i could easily switch to a game and play on-line via wi-fi for free for as long as i want. I also use my PS3 for blu-ray as well. To me its the complete entertainment system with my Philips HD TV and wafferdale sound system. Its a hassle free entertainment system. You buy it, you get everything.

One of the main reason why i wanted one early is so that i could play the new games when they come out. I don't know about you guys but getting to play Resistance now is not as fun as getting it back in 2006 and play it then since there are better games now. This to me is the disadvantage of waiting. You don't get to enjoy games while they are hot.

I can honestly say its the best entertainment system i have bought. Never regretted paying 600 bones for it.

Seeing as I have backward compatibility, 4 usb slots, and the front opens up to reveal SD card and all the other great stuff. I'd say it was worth it.

honestly, the dry spell for the PS3 was only those first 6 months of 2007, because the later half had some great games, and 2008 and 2009 have been great also. i even got to enjoy some good Blu Ray movies also.

anyone who's been a Playstation fan for a while knows that this is how Sony rolls, and it's a willing decision to adopt early.

i didn't adopt early for the PS1 and PS2 (i got my PS1 a few years after launch, and i got my PS2 about 8 months after launch), but i early adopted for the PS3, because by that point, i knew Sony would be good for it. and they have been.

I'm sure the average 360 owner would have gone through 3 xbox 360s minimum in the lifetime of my PS3.

If it wasn't for us early adopters, newbies would not be getting the PS3 slim at $299. Sony could only afford to slim the model after component costs came down after 24million units shipped.

I love both my two 60GB PS3 - I personally like the heftier model and the spiderman font! In that space of time I have become a level 12 trophy whore!

id say it was smarter to buy a ps3 at launch than a 360, i mean seriously does anyone havea launch 360 that works...i have one that turns on but the disc drive broke right after the warranty ran out.

I bought a 20 gig launch ps3 for $499 and put in a 160 gig hdd the same day. I installed linux a week later and think it's honestly the best electronic item I have ever owned. I have been using it for 3 years as my media center and i don't think I could live without it. I've play and beaten about 60 games in that time. ps3 is the shiznit!!

Smart???... It really depends. If you care alot about hardware and BC, then it was a smart choice to buy a PS3. If you care about online features back then, it was not a smart choice to buy a PS3. I know some of you dont care about those features, but others do. I love my old 80gig, but there's one thing I hate about it: Its the noicest console I have.

Well, while it was much more expensive you also got the FULL PS3 meaning BC, card slots, etc. You also got to enjoy all the great exclusive without missing on much because you were waiting. The PS3 is the best purchase I've made and I don't regret paying what I did. If PS4 comes out at a high price point I'll still buy it because of the quality assurance, support, and exclusives that come with the PlayStation brand.

I bought mine a year later 80gb and its still running. Got a 360 this year it got the RRoD 2 weeks later.

I was one of the very first consumer who bought the PS3 when it first came out, i think my console was in the first 100 sold. and to this day i enjoy it and feel proud that i bought it.

I think I'm going to get rid of this 20(160 hdd) gig model and get a slim soon. I always missed having wireless. I'm also trying to make better use of shelf space wherever I am, and the slim seems like a pretty good stand-in. It's supposedly freakishly quiet too, stays nice and cool while running, has wireless, and since I always had a 20 gig model, I don't know what it's like to sacrifice those extra front slots so they aren't a concern for me. I can't see myself using extra ports anyway. The 2 USB's seems sufficient since I rarely ever use more than 2 at once, never did I use the full 4.

Well I do have BC and therefor I can play ps2 games and that's the only good thing about buying one at Launch. But to simply answer the question no it was not smart and I wish I didn't buy one at all (Only reason I did because of the hype in which it has yet lived up to in my book) but I did so oh well......

People get so mind bogglingly caught up in the idea that a game console is an investment. I bought mine in 2007 because I wanted to play the games on it. The way things have progressed is completely irrelevant. Would I save $300 and have missed years of gaming? That's just stupid.

RROD 3 times, MS not fixing my account up because of HDD problems. All in all, if people can wait for a 'slim' or 'updated' version you are better of doing just that. I am on my second Xbox and am only more than happy to buy a PS3 at this stage as it is great value and I can cheaply pick up exclusives I missed. Fanboys aside... we are ALL winners with the new model.

on launch day march 23th march 2007 and a grand on it and i love it some much sony gave us an got rid of my old ps2 sold it but now looking at hte slime i was nearly going to sell it for slim but decided to keep on it as slim dosent have backward compabilty and origanal is hard to get these days and ebay they bring hte big $$$$$$$$$$ as people want them

Yes. I've had the pleasure of having a great entertainment system for almost 3 years. Now I upgraded to the SLIM.

I've had mine since Friday April 13th and am not gonna lie the early days where ruff with the library being so small. Then again this was 6 months after launch but because i got the 60Giger i had alot of PS2 games to play. That dry spell only lasted like a few months for me anyway. Now i have an extensive collection and THEEE best PS3 the original Luxury edition.

So in short no i am very happy with my purchase. It has only gotten better since the day i got it.

Yes it was, i wont deny it was expensive but it was well worthy. I dont want to sound arrogant, but thanks to all of us that bought it at launch and phat models, sony has been able to pull out this one in this generation; why not support a machine and a brand that is not afraid of giving the chance to developers to realize their dreams, even if they seem risky. I loved many of my psone and ps2 games, and i knew of all the backslash sony was getting for the ps3, but i also knew if nobody bought it all those great experiences would end. I think sony has learned something this generation and in some way although this is not defined yet, they owe us (original ps3 adopters) big time. Cheers for sony and its ps brand.

In 2 1/2 years since the inauguration of the PS3, it has suffered as what could be the "worst" console this generation, only inches away from being the next Dreamcast.

Now soon after, the PS3 has made tremendous strides, passing many obstacles, the economy and ridicule (until this very day). Here today, the PS3 has it all: the decent ported games, the exclusives, the online and now "the price". Looking back, all those negative issues seems so far away.

With PS3 Slim's price launch marks the end of production of the PS3, in 2 1/2 years and surpassing all surmountable odds and may continue to possibly be the "best" console this generation.

This very same PS3 console that had so much history can now finally stand side-by-side with the competition of the 360 and the Wii. With that being said, this console has officially becomes a "collector's edition" and those who owns the old models can finally look at it and say "You've done it again, SONY!" And now PS3 owners will be rewarded of what could be another AAAA title and GOTY in the form of Uncharted 2!

Arcade sucks...Most of the games that we're hyped as ''these games are alot better than the ps3 ones'' were dissapointing and the price of the accesories etc...

The factory defect rate for Xbox 360 consoles in August 2005 - four months prior to its US launch - was as high as 68 per cent.

What's more, the initial yield on the three-core CPU designed by IBM for the next-generation console was just 16 per cent.

That's all according to a report by VentureBeat's Dean Takahashi, author of the console's unofficial biography, of sorts, Xbox 360 Uncloaked, who attributed the numbers to "several sources".

In his article Xbox 360 defects: an inside history of Microsoft's videogame console woes, Takahashi also wrote that during meetings to outline the Xbox 360 project, "Secretly, Microsoft had planned on selling 50 million Xbox 360s".

Later on, Takahashi's sources claim that Microsoft was well aware of the massive defect rate (although entertainment division boss Robbie Bach has subsequently denied there was any concern about it at the time) and chose to press on with the console's launch anyway.

Over 1.2 million consoles were returned by early 2007, he wrote, and eventually Microsoft announced a free replacement service as it got its head around the problem.

As to why, Takahashi identified any number of things, but in terms of the early round of problems it sounds like feature-creep, with the late addition of hard disks and wireless controllers blocking airflow

"It turned out in the end that this was all going too far, too fast," said one source quoted by Takahashi. "They were adding too many features after things were locked down. That incremental feature adding just made it fragile."

Microsoft also took ownership of the ATI and IBM chip designs at the heart of the console. "However," Takahashi pointed out, "this was a mistake: it was now responsible for failures related to the chip." Yeah - oops.

The result of all the failures was, initially, a "bone pile" in a warehouse at manufacturer Wistron and a repair centre in Texas of over 500,000 consoles that either didn't work to begin with or broke quickly. All the while we were being told failures were within "normal rates for consumer electronics products".

Later, between January and June 2007, Microsoft even shut down manufacturing, according to Takahashi, in order to investigate.

Yet for all this, Takahashi reported that Robbie Bach told fellow diners at some sort of technology banquet in July that gamers have largely forgiven the company for the defectives 360s.

For Microsoft's part, it said: "This new story repeats old information, and contains rumors and innuendo from anonymous sources, attempting to create a new sensational angle, and is highly irresponsible."

I bought a Japanese PS3 about 5 months before the UK launch, upgraded it to a 250GB Hard Drive and it has never skipped a beat.
Only bad thing is, it won't play UK DVDs or UK PS2 games. Bummer!

You get free wifi, backwards compatibility (launch consoles), and free internet. Especially when you get at a price for 399 when the 60gig went discontinue mode. The best 400 dollars paid knowing that I have a console that is reliable, future proof, and a beast. I have also a 360, but don't have to go through five 360's for my launch ps3.

Got a 60GB at launch. Best console there will be this generation. That silver sublime finish is just sweet.

I got my PS3 @ launch and its still kicking strong. Its fully backwards compaitable, memory card readers, multi USB ports and has all the updates that the slim will have when it launches. So HELL YEAH the best $1000 I ever spent.

I gotta say, I got mine just after launch and couldn't do without all the extras on the front, all 4 USB's get used continually same with the CF, SD and Sony card slots too. BUT, the flat I was living in had rising damp and when I moved house there was like, a small cup of water's worth poured out of it's ass!!!
When I moved into my new house it lived for about four months (and sounded like a small aircraft trying to take off!) before dieing, it was out of warranty but Sony STILL replaced it with another launch model within two weeks for nothing. Can't say I've had customer care like that before!

But the 1 year and 6 months later it wouldn't read the discs anymore the blu ray laser broke but luckily i bought a guarantee so went to currys and they said the 60 gb was out of production which i knew and sony said i could have the 160gb and still keep the 60gb so i know have 2 ps3s courtesy of the best electronics company in the world so best £400 i ever spent

I got mine on day one. 60 gig version. I've since upgraded to 240 gigs. It's got backwards compatibility. Works great. I wouldn't trade it for a new one.

I no longer have my launch console but I was an early adopter here in the UK and buying that PS3 is a decision I definitely do not regret.

I have a launch 60 gig and it is the most complete version of the system. You all are celebrating the Slim but it is far from the most superior Ps3 model.

My 60GB still has the plastic wrap on it to protect the case from scratches. I just trimmed it away from the vent holes for adequate air flow. It is in immaculate condition. I will be buying one or two slims and archiving away my pristine condition launch 60GB model.

Just the fact that I have the ability to play any PS1, PS2 or PS3 game on my PS3 out weighs the smaller chipset / fan noise that the slim offers.

I would say that because PS3 dropped its price rather quickly and because it was awhile before the PS3 had more than a few good games to play, it wasn't smart to buy at launch.

For almost 3 years I've been enjoying:

- The best 1st party games on any console
- BD movies
- streaming my DVD movies directly from my PC to my HDTV thru my PS3

Sure it's cheaper now but I've definitely gotten my money's worth out of my PS3.

Well worth it! I bought my 60gb launch system when GameStop was giving a $100 trade in credit for the PS2. My PS2 (launch) was having issues reading some of my older blue bottom discs. So it was the perfect time to upgrade.

I just regret buying it at at launch not because of the high price I payed for it but because the system pratically had no good game(s) that realy interested me on the first year and a half of life of the PS3.
At that time I should have bought a Wii or even an xbox360( even because I don't liek MS but this system had good games at that time).

What happened to me was that I bought a PS3, got bored for having pratically no games(ok had resistance and HS but it is too little) and so I had to buy a Nintendo DS+ Wii + PSP to feed my hunger for games.

Today I could live no problem with just a Ps3 + PSP combo because NOW there are lots of interesting games for my taste on the playstation family.

As much as people yell and complain about no backwards PS3's I'm glad i have a launch 60GB PS3. I took the HDD out and put in a 550GB. I got all my ports that i never use but hey i got them just in case. lol

Considering I've been playing PS3 games for more than 2 years now and people who are getting the slim as their first PS3 have not, I suppose that two years of gaming has been worth the money I paid for my 60GB model.
