Rumor: UMD equipped PSP-4000 in development

Nick @ PS3Center writes:

The PSP-4000 is purportedly in development, and it will come fully equipped with a UMD drive. Details outside of that are still hazy at best, but expect to hear more about it after Sony's taken care of the launch of the PSP Go.

Could definitely see this one happening, especially considering that Sony was quick to say they weren't giving up on UMD.

LordMarius6109d ago

I believe Super_Secret mention something about a new version of the PSP, The Go not being its last

rockleex6109d ago

But that's because its supposed to be the higher end model.

PSP-4000 will continue to be around the same price as the 3000.

Milky Joe6109d ago

I don't see why they would. I mean it's getting a bit silly now. They just need to set their R&D department on PSP2 instead of all these slightly upgraded models.

It' s funny though, the PSP GO has only just been officialy announced after months of rumour and the media has ALREADY pulled another PSP model out of somewhere.

But yeah, like said, I think Sony would benefit from leaving PSP1 at the GO and putting together a really strong system for PSP2.

Ju6109d ago

Looks like Sony has introduced yet another hand-held gaming device in disguise. The Go is another product, while the PSP will just stay as is (and gets another revision), huh ? How did that happen...

randomwiz6109d ago

I think I speak for most people when I say we're ready for the psp2 Sony.

Why go backwards?! Digital Distribution is a brave, new step. Why would Sony take a backward step and revisit UMD? Just doesn't make any sense.

STK0266109d ago

well, actually, a PSP-4000 might feature more than just an UMD drive. Compared to the Go, it would most likely have a larger screen (like the 3000), however, it could be an OLED one, since it's becoming somewhat of a standard for portable device (Sony X series, Zune HD and hopefully the next gen of iTouch to be unveiled in a few weeks). It could also pack a 16 or 32GB of internal memory and a memory stick slot or whatever they feel like putting into their fancy new devices these days. Support for wireless-n could also be added aswell as a small camera and GPS.

I think the Go will not see any revision during it's lifetime, while the PSP in itself will continue to evolve until Sony is ready to announce the PSP2. The Go is a bit like the PSX was to the PS2, it does some additionnal stuff, but it won'T replace it and probably will only account for a relatively small percentage of total sales.

Anyway, seeing that many old PSP titles which didn'T sell very well (games like Generation of Chaos or Dragoneer's aria come to mind) probably won'T see a digital release, Sony is smart to continue to support it'S UMD.

I'm going to wait for PSP -9000, that's going to be the best one.

Venomish6109d ago (Edited 6109d ago )

Yep, 4000 is real
super_secret talked about it

Why must they create so many revisions?!?

Polluted6109d ago

That's exactly what I was just wondering. I guess I see why they went with the slim and I can sort of understand the PSP Go!, but why another original PSP revision?

Ju6109d ago

The reason what drives all those developments: cost savings. Every cent counts, where ever you can slash some by replacing some components to a newer, cheaper version, they'll do it. Well, and (slightly) more features might be an marketing instrument, as long as it fits into the costs structure.

Sibs6109d ago

It doesn't make sense to do it if they merely save cents- the cost of the R&D and the new outfitting of the factories would make the savings moot. They are either going to make it so they can drop the price or so they can make a lot more money off of it.

FuckinUsername6109d ago

"Why must they create so many revisions?!? "

*Cough* Nintendo DS, Ds Lite, DSi

Ju6109d ago

Cost reduction includes manufacturing and its optimization.
