The obvious reason why Microsoft repairs for free up to 3 years is because the 360 has already been known for it's numerous hardware issues worldwide, the PS3 has never suffered from hardware issues on a Mass Scale like the 360, so a 3 year warranty wasn't exactly a necessity, and most electronics come standard with a 1 year warranty anyways (including the Wii).

If the 360 was a reliable console and didn't have issues like RROD, E74, Disc Scratching, etc... do you really believe that it would have a 3 Year Warranty? Of course not.

I wouldn't really classify the issue she had as a "Common Fault" because the PS3's Failure Rate still falls within an acceptable percentage rate.

Either way, I feel bad for the consumer that had something to go wrong with their PS3, but she only makes up a small percentage of PS3 owners that have had to go through this.

If you sell the system for half it's worth to someone who thinks they can fix it, you can use that money and the money your would have spent on repairs to buy a new PS3. That is what my friend did.

That is unfortunate but I found under EU law there is a 2 year warranty on electronics but you still need to fight sony to get a free repair.

In Europe it is 200 Euro after just 1 year of warranty to get your PS3 fixed, or not even yours, you'll get back someone elses refurbished PS3 with 3 months of extra warranty. And many are known to drop out again just after that 3 months ofcourse.

So Sony forces you to buy a new one, because you don't pay 200 bucks for a refurbished trashbin PS3 that someone else has used intensively!

They now have mine which got a YLOD but I fixed it and traded it in , now awaiting a PS3 SLIM.

I am thinking about extended service through EB which costs $80, gives you a year after the official Sony 12 month warranty if anything happens. They will send a refurbished one to EB for me to replace my broken one with. Now having YLOD happen and I have heard of the BLUray drives failing long before this article I think it might be worth it.

That's how the world should be, people should fix their belongings themselves but unfortunately today's world is filed with flippin lazy ass people who sit on the couch all day and can't fix a dam thing. Oh and YLOD can be fixed at home without having to send it in and you don't have to be a DIY type of person to fix it.

Wrong. I had the dead BluRay after 3 weeks, thats fast indeed. Although a friend of mine had it dead after 3 days, now that is really insane.

Sony is much worse than M$ wend comes to warranty!My 60GB EU console died from YLOD! I had to pay 150euros to Sony for a refurbish PS3 and for that refurbish PS3 they sent me SONY only gives consumers another 3 months of warranty!On the other hand i had a 360 that died on me twice,the first time one year after i brought her and M$ sent me a refurbish one for free,after another year and 2 months that same refurbish 360 died on me and i sent her back to M$,again for free and they sent me a new one to replace the refurbish one.Free of charges and still haves 2 years of warranty!So all i can assume is that M$ support is way better than SONY!

I think the $149.99 to repair my 14 month old ps3 for a yellow light death is ridiculous,aussies really are getting a shaft.

Well its more of a switch it on, one yellow flash, three quick beeps and then the red light just keeps flashing.Its decided to take dead space to the grave with it and I was 3 levels from platnuming it. It was just shy of 2 years, and i thought the sucker was bullet proof. Lucky for me I got an extended warranty from Game, so it'll get repaired or I'll be reimbursed, hopefully.
However because the new firmware is out soon, I just bought an 80gb model so I can put my backed up data from my 60 on it. I read that if your back up a has an older firmware than the system your trying to restore the data to it won't do it, so better to be safe than sorry/gutted eh. Anywho if my 60gb gets fixed I'll keep the 80gb upstairs, if not then the cheque should cover what I spent for the 80gb (£250.00 with a game and a bluray (which will be sold)).

We do earn more an hour than U.S.A and obviously we pay more too, because we are a country that loves exports. Our Aussie made stuff is good, but most of us rather buy from other countries.
$699 is the PS3 price and $499.95 for the new one.

Here in Aus unless you extend, the warranty is only 1 year. But $315 does sound very high.
You could buy a PS3 from other countries, just need a power adaptor convertor.

Its a shame for her that it broke but PS3 does have a one year warranty. Just because XB HAD to increase to 3 years to stave off a recall doesnt mean everyone has to. Remember XB was only 3 months originally while PS3 was always 1 year.

Mine died almost 2 years later - if not more. Sony Australia repaired it in just a few weeks at no cost - not even postage there and back :)

Sony's policy is that their stuff doesn't break (nevermind the PS and PS2, or the batteries or laptops) so it must be the owners fault...anyway...as one idiot said...xbox failure rate is 54%...and the price of gas in the US is around $3...so I'm not sure WTF that has to do with Sony screwing it's customers...again. I must admit I was shocked when I found out that I needed to pay as much as A$ 315 just to fix my broken PS3 (apparently something was wrong with the blu-ray drive). I think it's a bit too much for a repair fee.

I had this issue, my Ps3 would read everything but bluray games. sony would sya that my drive was faulty, but thats not true. if it was, all the disks would not work, as they share a common lens.

to fix it, i used the PS3 (specia) recovery menu, and recovered the filesystem.

as this occured to most people after firmware update, it clearly isnt a hardware issue, it this, look on youtube for instructions to get into the recovery menu.

Here in New Zealand Sony are asking NZ$375 to repair post warranty PS3 failures. However we have the Consumer Guarantees Act says that goods should last for a "reasonable" amount of time.

To prove this to Sony, one PS3 user over here took Sony to court and won. It cost him NZ$30 for the tribunal hearing.

I've had great experience with Sony Customer Services here in the UK. They once replaced my dead PS3 for free even though it was 9 months out of warranty!

I had a blu ray disc failure 3 months out of waranty, sony replaced it for free, and gave me an extra 3 months on the warranty. I took out the continuous play service (which is no longer offered but valid for existing members). I got good service, but my friend paid £150 for his YLOD. Belive it or not, sometimes it depends who u speak to on the phone, some will be really helpful, others will stick more to the letter of the law

However much I like my ps3, I have to agree Sony needs to look into their service charges

The reason it is more expensive there then in the US is because of all the HIGH taxes. Why do you think that a game cost $110-$120 as someone has said, because $60 of the price is taxes! It is not a conspiracy on Sony's part. That's way the same service here cost less.

All of you people who think Sony needs to repair this for free or change their warranty are just completely clueless.

First: We have no details on how it happened. The owner could have been the cause of the hardware failure, in which case Sony could not be held liable.

Second: Microsoft only gave their extended warranty after millions of complaints, lawsuits, embarassment and after it was shown to have over a 33% defect rate.

Third: Microsoft's extended warranty only covered that specific RROD problem. It does not cover any other defects. If the DVD drive stopped working, they would not cover it.

Fourth: Sorry, but a standard 2+ year warranty on electronics simply does not exist. Most are from 3-12 months. Just because of 1 stupid complaint you think Sony needs to have some 3 year warranty when no one else in the electronics industry does?

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
