Sony Asks $315 To Fix New PS3 Blu ray Problem

Sony Computer Entertainment is asking consumers to fork out $315 for a PS3 Blu ray problem much to the angst of Australian users of the $699 gaming console.

Writing in response to a News Ltd story on the new slim PS3, Trish of Melbourne said that when she recently reported a Blu ray problem to SCE Australia she was told that it would cost $315 to fix her PS3 console that was less than 2 years old.

She wrote "When the Xbox 360 developed a common fault outside the warranty period, Microsoft fixed it for free. Having to spend $315 to fix a PS3 console after not even 2 years is equivalent to spending about $10,000 on repairs on an average car - totally ridiculous".

Right because this problem amounts to the overwhelming bullshit Microsoft endured and never fixed?

Hallucinate6107d ago

might aswell just buy a new ps3

Tr10wn6107d ago

Exactly that's what i did buy another 360 even thought they got me covered free i just could wait any longer

zag6107d ago

A PS3 doesn't cost $699 standard and I've seen thenm for $650 in bundles etc.

As for MS they didn't offer a 3 tear warrenty (which doesn't exist anymore now) they only did it because so many 360's were being handed in after the 12 month warranty that they had to do something which was the 3 year warranty.

It wasn't something they planned to do or wanted to do.

and it's a 2 week turn around which is probably the postal fees

WTF this got to be fake no way Sony is going to charge you $315 to fix your ps3 i mean come on that how much the fvcking system cost.

You can buy a wii or xbox 360 with $315.

lloyd_wonder6107d ago

Games cost like $100 bucks in AU... So, it's not surprising.

TheTruth896107d ago

We are speaking about AUSTRALIAN DOLLAR, 312 AU $ aren't 315 USA $, not even near!!

ZBlacktt6107d ago (Edited 6107d ago )

Standard Federal Minimum Wage (FMW) at $14.31 per hour ($543.78 per week).

Two times higher than what it is in the USA ( $7.25 ). So don't be blown a way at the figures, lol. So they are playing the same as we do to get the console fixed ( $150 usd ). Fortunately for us and Sony, this issue is not huge.

How much do PS3s cost in Australia? Is it really $699? If so than damn, I wouldn't even play video games in Australia.

Voozi6107d ago

Yea games are pretty high there too, I believe if I have my info correctly, they get their prices from SCEE, pretty much AU console owners are usually getting shafted when it comes to prices on games, consoles, and now even repairs.

nveenio6107d ago

The PS3 is worth $699, even if you have to buy one every two years. The idiot that wrote this article compares it to the 360, but the PS3's failure rate isn't 54%.....so........ I've had my PS3 since launch (60GB) and it's working great. Also, I don't know anyone whose doesn't.

Above Awesome6107d ago

And I thought us Canadians were getting screwed over.

Trollimite6107d ago

here in america you make about $6.10 working at mc donalds

the same job in austrailia will get you about $13.50 things cost more, but the people make more also!

and the title is veery misleading!

Darkeyes6107d ago

Isn't that 699 Australian dollars? What's the transfer rate in USDs? Boy 699$ is a lot of cash to fork out... Everything is really expensive there... And here I was thinking Europe was expensive...

Any ways, you can always import a PS3... The games are region free so it doesn't matter a lot.

gaffyh6107d ago

Yeah it's extortionate OK, I had to pay £150 to get my YLOD PS3 fixed, and that was just under 2 years old. Get over it, the warranty lasts 1 year, it broke out of warranty, which means you have to pay. Doesn't really deserve a story, enough people have been ripped off like this. I like how it says "new" PS3, but it's nearly 2 years old LOL.

If they wanted to make a story, it should have been something like, why doesn't Sony, MS or Nintendo offer extended warranties? Sony used to do continuous play service in UK, but then they stopped it because people kept scamming the service.

nycredude6107d ago

Another article from an obvious fanboy ranting against the Ps3. FYI Microsoft pays for the repairs because the failure rate is due to a defective design and is unacceptable at the high rate. The Ps3 broke. Electronics, whether you like it or not break in time.

BTW how the heck do you compare this to spending $10,000 to fix a car? $315 vs $10,000??? huh?

prunchess6107d ago

Aus $699= US $585.62 - That's very expensive. As for the price of the repair again that's very expensive to.

I suffered the YLOD a few months ago and when I rang Sony they wanted 150 Euro to repair it. I found a console repair shop here in Ireland and he repaired it for 40 Euro. I probably would have sent it off to be repaired by Sony but I hadn't backed up my save games and had a ton of other stuff on the hard drive.

Sony need to look at these repair costs. It's just not on.

Voozi6107d ago (Edited 6107d ago )

315 Australian dollars = 264.72600 U.S. dollars (Using Google to convert lol)

And just cause it mentions $699

699 Australian dollars = 587.4396 U.S. dollars

~~~~~~~~~~~
@prunchess
I agree, 150 is too much to repair for the YLOD now considering for 150 more, you can get yourself a Slim...I hope repair costs drop since after experiencing the YLOD the first time after 2 years (Jan07->May09) I'm kind of worried about my PS3 still lol
Cintai6107d ago
I guess math isn't your strong suit.
If sony is asking for $315 to repair a product worth $699 thats 45.1% of the cost.
If you bought a car at we'll say $20,000 and had to pay 45.1% you would pay $9,020.
I can see where the comparison is coming from. I don't live in Australia so I have no idea how much a car costs there, but the jist of the comparison is the percentage paid.
I also don't care what system people supports but everyone should be upset that a company is asking for almost half the cost of a new one to repair an old one.
Shame on the company and in this case shame on sony.
solidt126107d ago
That sucks because in America they only charged $150 to replace my out of warranty PS3.
Cintai6107d ago
Wow thats pretty good I'm glad your happy about the $150 repair fee. In fact your actually bragging about how much Sony will charge you to repair a system.
BTW since the Slim is now only $299 wouldn't you be now paying 50% less than a new one to have an old one repaired.
That makes so much sense to me. LOL
Sony should be ashamed of themselves for not repairing these systems for free the first 3-4 years and for a smaller fee after that. Not half thats too funny.
Only way companies will wake up is if their own fans don't defend them blindly and complain when they do these things because sooner or later they could do it to you.
BTW that $150 is 3 years of XBOX Live service.
rockleex6107d ago
It is well within industry standards otherwise Sony would have been sued by now.
For example, RROD started happening just MONTHS after the 360's release. Compared to YLOD happening to very few people TWO YEARS after they got their PS3.
prunchess6107d ago
I suffered the YLOD with my 60 gig Euro launch model just after the two year mark. Anyone getting the YLOD or laser fail within the first three years should have had their PS3 repaired free of charge.
Console has been working since but I think the laser might be on its last legs. It's gotten an awful lot of use over the last couple of years. Every single member of the family has been using it non stop.
The primary cause of the YLOD is the adhesive the glues the heat-sink to the CELL processor goes off and the heat-sink detaches from the chip. At 40 Euro it was a very cheap and quick fix. Hardly a terminal hardware failure and doesn't warrant a 150 Euro charge. The laser on the other hand is pricey.
SONY, MS and NINTENDO should state what their console life span should be. I've always thought consoles should come with clocks just like cars so us GAMERS have got some comeback when dealing with the manufacturer if it fails. People wont feel as aggrieved when dealing with the manufacture when it needs a repair then.
Real Gambler6107d ago
They never, ever sold a car under manufacturing price (even if they do claim so in some advertising)...
And I would not complain too much about a BluRay failure, since it could also be caused by inserting a dvd or bluray with peanut butter or jelly on it. (yes, I've seen it!).
Also, the price for repair is fixed, no matter what you want to get fixed. So sure enough, it does sound expensive for a bluray problem, but remember, this is the same price even if they have to reflow your main card. 20 minutes to strip the PS3, 20 minutes do the reflow, 20 minutes to put it back together, then add some testing and burning on top of that. Probably about 5 people touching your PS3.
Well, sure they could do the same thing with a car. No matter what you have to repair, you pay $800. Change the engine? $800. Oil change? $800. Brake job? $800 New transmission? $800 Replace a $2.99 defective sensor? $800. Not sure people would like it, particularly since you service a car many time during a year : )
Syronicus6107d ago
Microsoft ignored the problem for months and months until finally they were called to the courthouse so many times that they were essentially forced to give out a warranty for the RROD. In the case of Sony's PS3, it has less than a 10% failure rate and does not warrant a free fix. When you suffer from a 54% failure rate like MS and the 360, you need to come up with something to make the people happy.
memots6107d ago
I would definitely pay to get mine fixed no mather the cost.
I have a 60 gig mode, Backward compatible is awesome and ill pay extra to keep it.
Eddie201016107d ago
The Australians pay higher prices for nearly everything so the PS3 price there should not really be compared to the prices in another country, different economy's.
gamesR4fun6107d ago
here in canada it costs 120 to get repaired after warranties up
wonder how much of that has to do with our laws n stuff vs Australia also dont the ausies parliament h8 games n tax em to bits???
FamilyGuy6107d ago (Edited 6107d ago )
It was about a year and a half and only because a class action law suit threatened them with a recall did they finally extend the warranty to 3 years, though I believe 5 would have been a truer number for the "estimated life-cycle of a video gaming console".
It'd be nice if sony didn't charge some high amount or anything at all but all consumer electronics have a similar manufacturers warranty. There are extended warranties offered for purchase whenever you buy these things though. I would suggest NOT going to sony for a fix though, as they charge a base amount/flat-rate for any problem so going to a repair shop will always be cheaper.
The title is misleading on multiple levels as the system was not "new" and "$" is usually associated with USD, does Australia use that symbol as well?
agentace6107d ago (Edited 6107d ago )
They fixed mine(out of warranty) for free, well they didnt fix it they sent someone to my house with a new one and i just gave them my old 1, best customer service i`ve ever seen or heard of for that matter
Projekt7tuning6107d ago
@inveni0 I to had to pay $150 US to fix my launch 60gig PS3. I have had my xbox fixed 2 time for free. It would be nice if sony would fix this problem on the launch 60gig ps3s for free. It has to be a common problem, because if you search ebay you will find tons of listings for new bluray lasers. Also search goggle for ps3 repair. Its always for dead bluray lasers. I wish Sony would just admit the problem exist and fix the damn thing for free. The other company dose.
badz1496107d ago
that was the price for 40GB model and then upgraded to 80GB. initially, PS3 cost AUD999 and that was a hard time for PS3 and for those who wanted 1 like me! I bought my PS3 just before the introduction of the 40GB for AUD978 with an extra sixaxis and 2 games! beside my house and my car, that was the single most expensive thing I've ever bought!
DaTruth6107d ago
Ya, they fix the RROD, but if you have any other problems besides that, you're on your own! They were forced to by a class action lawsuit, you can do the same to Sony, but you will lose!
The key word here is "common"!!!
ThanatosDMC6107d ago
Sux for him. PS3 has a one year warranty. What's he whining about when he didnt get an extended warranty from his store. I didnt but then again PS3s are reliable.
TheReaper426107d ago (Edited 6107d ago )
US average minimum wage $6~7
Australia average minimum wage $13.50
US PS3 = $299.99
Aus PS3 = $699.99
699.99 Australian Dollar = 587.558 US Dollar
$587.56 divided by 2 = $293.78 USD (due to the 2x salary difference)
Basically Australia is getting the PS3 cheaper by 6 dollars than the USA.
So why are people complaining about the original pricing?
Final_Rpg6107d ago
I live in Australia. I paid $1100 for the PS3 when it first came out here on march 13th. Games average on retail here at about $110-120 per game. Do you understand why I get frustrated when Americans complain about having to pay 60 dollars a game. This was especially the case when are currencies were pretty much identical.
Final_Rpg6107d ago
If you are under the age of 18 in Australia you get paid wage of about about $6.50 from Mcdonald's. I know this for a fact as my brother worked there recently.
tripewire6107d ago
@Final
Dude. Shop at JB HiFi. New games are normally $79 on release. Stay clear of EB and Kmart as these stores are more for the mums and dads that dont know any better. Old favourite is to "buy" a new copy from eb, if it sucks return it. If its good, return it then buy it cheaper from JB Hifi. Devs get 2x sales and EB have to sell a practically new game as used
. Oh and to clarify for all those "foreigners", 688 or whatever was the price before the price cut. Im pretty sure it does down to $499 now.
Guwapo776107d ago
I'm not covering for Sony in any way when it comes to the prices they charge. But one way to look at it is like when you car needs an oil change. Would you take your car back to say Toyota which charges $50 for parts and $75 per hour labor? Or would you take it to Jiffy Lube were you can get that oil changed for $25? There are many Sony certified repair places, try them first before you get robbed.
Grannyvukka6107d ago
Actually when PS3 launched here in Oz it was $1000.00 Australian dollars. The conversion rate at the time was not even a factor, other wise it would have equated to a much more reasonable $700-800 price (and this is including shipping and numerous taxes) I bought a launch machine...They skyrocketed in price when b/c was canned, so I could sell mine now without too much loss.
We get ripped of hard over here, and to add insult to injury, companies like Sony Asutralia slap us in the face for supporting them. I would be pissed if I bought my launch PS3 only to have to cop this 2 years in. Get with it Sony. If you don't want the rest of us to abandon you for the 360 or Wii, the smarten the f%#k up.
Arthur_6106d ago
crazy aussies, dont you know that Australian PS3's are equipped with FLUX-CAPACITORS??!!?!
You need to hop into your Jeep, Land Rover, Sabaru, etc. and slam on the gas. Once you've reached 88 mph(or 142 kmh lol) throw your PS3 out the driver side window--this will send its internal components back in time, returning them to their original, working state.
**FYI, you may also want to tape a pillow to it, to avoid damage upon impact with the ground.
Yeah makes sense you comparing $50 a year charge to a $315 charge by a company that don't care.
Go back to school and learn some basic math $315 would take care of 6 years of XBOX Live
The mentallity on this site is really starting to show. People have to take of their blinders in order to start thinking for themselves.
Bunch of lemmings.
FlipMode6107d ago
all aspects of gaming cost considerably more in Australia.
ZBlacktt6107d ago
compare fail rates will ya?
kaelix6107d ago
my mom is as cheap as the next my gf is the one that bought my ps3 so tsh. I know first hand on how cheap parents can get. That is why they ask me what to buy now instead of buying random crap or else they would have bought some defective joke.
Cintai6107d ago
Ok.. well I just heard on the other area (gamer zone) that the repairs would cost $150 in the states. So in that case 3 years worth of xbox live.
That would still be 3 years of service.
As for the other lemming. (ZBlacktt)
Fail rate. Xbox failed more but had FREE repairs, whats your point. My God people had to go without their sytems for a little bit, stop the world.
I have both so I couldn't care what company does compared to the other. I on the other hand feel bad for consumers when lemming like you 2 would rather come up with excuses or "Blah blah xbox fail rate blah blah".
Why don't you lemmings stand up against the company and just state that Sony are idiots for doing crap like this to their consumers.
WE're not talking boycot or stop enjoying their products just state the obvious and demand they change their ways.
ZBlacktt6107d ago
Cintai
Your a mature one, lol.. Typical. Anyway, people are making this out to be more than it is. It's not like the 30 to 54% or more Xbox console issue as well all know.
"Fail rate. Xbox failed more but had FREE repairs, whats your point. My God people had to go without their sytems for a little bit, stop the world."
Agree and that is nice as Sony does it for free as well within the first year. You CAN buy coverage at retail stores here that will go 2 years and replace the console in store for FREE as well. Which cost like $30 more at the time of the purchase. But as far as people going without their systems go. Yes, having a console that is known to fail not once, twice or four times on you is just that. Like going without one, lol.
Cintai6107d ago
what we are really talking about is customer support and how each company deals with problems.
If m$ extends their warranty than match what your competitors do.
Both companies are basically trying to compete with the wii in regards to their motion control, so why not take that same principle and apply it to warranties. Compared to how much MS had to pay out, we all know that Sony doesn't have the same rate of problems, so if they were to offer the same warranty they also know that they won't have to pay out as much money in the long run while keeping their customers happy no matter what.
I don't defend one company or another, yes MS screwed the pooch with their system and yes sony's don't break down as much. But I will stick up for the little guy (consumers) who get screwed by companies in regards to their systems breaking down and not getting a fair deal.
Thats all I'm saying, is stop defending a company when it comes to issues such as this.
Your still defending them if your talking about in store warranties and what not.
Sony is Dominating because competition is not existing. Compared to previous gens this is the poorest in terms of software offerings.
This is so far a remasters gen, with no competition to lift up the quality
..."PlayStation is dominating on every level"....
...Really???
PlayStation are soon heading into a new generation in the not to distant future. They currently have the worst customer satisfaction they've ever sustained as a company. The company is heading for a huge crash while at the same time they'll need to be planning how they are going to try and win back that favour and the build up to their new releases.
Yes financially they're winning but they're going to have to ride out this complete public corporate disaster. No one has faith in the company or the product anymore. They've damaged their public image so much this generation. Greed can kill anyone.
More confirmation that Jim Ryan is the culprit for what has happened to Sony. Hulst needs to go too. What sucks is that a lot of the good top heads at Sony are no longer there. I wish that guys that were forced out prematurely by Dumbo Jimbo like Shuhei and Layden came back.
Yep. Yoshida was responsible for bringing one of the best games of this generation to playstation (Stellar Blade).
