Well, I've found idiots from Home to TF2 (on voth PSN and Live) but have to say that the US Halo3 community has been the worst place I've ever been to for abuse. I know it's also the biggest but the percentage of times you get a tool in your game shouldn't change, should it?

I've got a strange, slightly mangled West London/NW England accent and just because a few US kids find it unusual I've had tons of grief for it and , at times, been forced to leave games which I find awful. I've also had to leave because people finmd using racial slurs hilarious-even when used towards actual people of whichever race!

Don't get me wrong since I've been too ill to work or get out much the inclusive and supportive nature of 99% of gamers has been really eye opening and a boon to the way I view people in general but the fact is there's a BIG slice of the Halo community taking all the pleasure out of a great game for a great many people. I don't see what can be done to change it because this isn't about just the odd fool-there's loads of them on there and I've no idea why the game has attracted a higher proportion of them than other games but, in my experience it really has.

I won't go on about this as I know lots of people stillmlove playing Halo online but, for me and many others, it's been ruined by the vocal and large minority of bigotted(and , sadly young)gamers. The odd idiot you find everywhere is unavoidable and easily dealt with but as there's many more of them in Halo, and to a lesser extent a few other games(I've had more than is usual on Gears2 at times as well as the occasional match dominated by them in Resistance2), I just don't know how to get round it.

Maybe I've been very unlucky but most of my hometown mates tend to agree that this is a bigger problem with Halo than other games and two of my friends(one who's openly and proudly gay and one who's very straight but sounds REALLY camp) just won't play it anymore because of the abuse they've suffered AND the abuse others suffered as well-honestly it's out of hand much like the sexist idiots who lurk round Home.

I think it's a cultural phenomena. 60% of Xbox 360's sold worldwide are owned in the US and racism and homophobia are terrible, in my experience. On the PSN, you're more likely to be playing against gamers in the UK, France, Japan and generally all over Europe and racial and homophobic taunts simply aren't as big an issue.
After gaming online for 2 years now on the PSN, I finally ran into my first idiot yesterday on COD:WAW where every second word out of his mouth was a slur, and he was very vocal about his status as an American citizen. I hadn't played online with XBL for some time and I forgot just how bothersome this type of behavior was. Needless to say, that's what grief reporting is for. Make sure these guys don't continue to get away with ruining online gaming for everyone.

Edit Above: Yeah, Halo 3 is bad. It was playing Halo 3 online that finally made me ask "Why and I paying for this?" and cancel my XBL. Fantastic game. Shame that the online is such a mess. I understand COD4 on the 360 was pretty bad as well, but I never saw that first hand.

People have argued that Sony should give away mics as well and I couldn't be more against that idea! Having to buy your own mic seems to have acted as a bit of an idiot filter. I mean, in order to buy a mic you have to have $20, have the brain power to figure out your need a mic, be able to tie your shoes and get to the store, figure out which mic you need, find your way back home, setup the mic.

Right there that seems to have eliminated the worst of the problem on the PSN. The problem gamers might have $20 and figure out they have to go to the store, but then they drool all over themselves, slip in their drool while trying to tie their shoes, hit their head, let out a barrage of racial slurs, probably throw things then forget why they were leaving the house in the first place, have a hot dog and then that's the end of it. They're probably still out there, gaming on the PSN, we just thankfully can't hear them.

No, giving microphones to everyone has proven a huge mistake, in my opinion.

-Webcam(most people have a USB webcam and most if not all work)
-Eyetoy(lost of people have an eyetoy from PS2)
-PS3cam(rare but still)
-Bluetoth headset(people have these)
-Sony official headset.

I have tried all of them(except PS3cam) and they ALL work quite well I am currently using an old eyetoy.

Sony have done everything they can to give people a Microphone just fanboys might find it too diffucult to plug in x, go to setting, system setting,audio setting, select x(not too sure on the exact thing)

My eyetoy sits to far away for it to pick up my voice correctly. And it doesnt sound real well through my TV to listen to people. Webcam? WTF does that have to do with in game voice chat? And my motorola does not work well with my PS3.

That's what the tools are there for. If everyone took a second to report these clowns we'd have a much better place to play but it's because these clowns can get away with it that they continue to do so.

The thing is, home is free. I don't want to pay to play a game just to get insulted racially throughout its entirety by some idiot that can't string three words in a sentence together properly. Even if the games are fun, the atmosphere can sometimes take lots of fun away from it.

I never play online without friends. I understand how annoying it is to play in the same team with a complete stranger who doesn't ever want to cooperate. When I play with my friends on my team we usually stay in a party so we never hear anyone else, not even in the pre-match lobby. On top of that, I've had to occasionally play with one or two people who I don't know and yes, racism and bigotry exists. But all I have to do is mute them. I honestly don't think anyone can list this as an issue with XBL. Muting is there for a reason. Racism and bigotry exist in the real world but we get over it.

Mute and report. That's the only way it'll ever stop.

I can understand your wanting to play with friends, and if I knew anyone with a 360 I might have stuck around on XBL longer, but I only know one other person with a 360. It was easy for me to make the switch, and eventually all my family members and buddies ended up picking up PS3's anyway so that's were my social circle plays, although I still play the majority of the time with just random people online. We're all old gamers, and gaming was a bit of a solitary experience back in the day. Not many of my 30 something gamer friends bother with online play, although we will meet up occasionally and it's always fun.

While you're right that these forms of ignorance do exist in all forms of online gaming to some extent , the point of the article is that it's more prolific on xbox live . I think thats something the majority of us can agree on .
