Although it does not have BC (got a 60gb PS3 for that), I like it. Hopefully, I will have enough spare funds to pick one up around the holiday season.

the 120GB. imo, the looks don't really matter, but I will say that I like the shiny finish on my phat model. If I were going to purchase a PS3 now, the Slim IS the way to go, no doubt about it.

how anyone can believe that the ps3 slim is better in terms of value than it is the original. Obviously Sony couldn't cut the price on the original ps3 to this extent because of costs. The Original Ps3 has all of the high quality/EXPENSIVE components which makes it BETTER than the slim. I mean Sony is obviously using cheaper/untested components in order to make it possible for consumers to buy it at 300 dollar price point. If i didn't already own a ps3 i would opt for the original ps3 while they still last. It's the same price and most people are probably hunting for 299.99 80gb original ps3's before they became extinct. I prefer a system that started out at 400 and gets cut to 300 over a system that debuts at 300. You get what you pay for.

i completely agree with you. Obviously Sony had to make sacrifices to cut costs. I'm sure that the ps3's hard/smooth/slick material was a big part of that sacrifice.

I buying the slim. Im down to 13gb on my 60gb ps3. I'll put the slim in my basement.

how is the slim better??? the only good thing about it is 120gig harddrive, with the old ps3 you can upgrade your hard drive easily. so it really isn't better. two you loose BC. three they took away installing multiple os. four no more sd/compact reader. you get what you pay for. sure 300 dollars is a deal if you look at it being the cheapest blu-ray player out there, but you are other features listed above. i understand they are cutting cost and saving energy, but the second generation 80gig is still better with same price. if i had a chose to get a ps3 i would get the 80gig. i am glad that i have the 60gig version. again you pay less you get less.

HD wouldn't be important. Fact of the matter is that entertainment has to do with Eye appeal. Who wants a nice 50 inch HDTV with an ugly, last Generation looking gaming system? Some people care and some don't. But if i'm jumping next generation i want my console to look and feel like it's next generation.

no, they're being discontinued. Sony is selling the slim exclusively to cut costs.

The original ps3 has all of the original/expensive/high tech components built into it. This is exactly the reason Sony couldn't cut the cost anywhere below 400. Now the slim is coming and it debuts at 300 because the costs of making the ps3 are lower because of cheaper components inside the slim. GET THAT 80GB PS3 Original before it sells out and phases out of existence. You probably have from now until September to get one before They're all gone and replaced by the slim.

I'm beginning to hate the ps3 slim will be faster disinfo. Sony should stop such silly claims with a press release or something. How about "The new cell is using 45nm tech, uses less power and cooling, and offers the same outstanding performance of its previous incarnations."..

Goddammit, stop saying the new slim will be faster, Consoles support a single computing spec, that's the reason we can have God of war or other excellent games, which runs the same across all consoles it is played on.

Well I'm glad I didn't wait for God of War III to buy the PS3 and got it in the LBP pack with a Fat PS3...

1. The Slim PS3 looks ugly cheap, although there are no fingerprints anymore the plastic itself looks cheap. Besides that I am missing the chrome, and I like the chrome Playstation 3 print it also better compared to the PS3 on the Slim.
2. The touch eject/power button have been replaced by cheap buttons you need to press. And the buttons look ugly too
3. The Slim needs a seperate stand to stand vertical. Wut? My Fat does it without. It costs 20 to 30 bucks or so for a stand. NICE!
4. No Linux installation? I thought the PS3 fanboys were all over it
5. the on/off switch is missing
6. Slim isn't always better, look when Apple got the macbook air, they overheat more easily because the airflow isn't optimal. Sony is rushed into the Slim, because they need to drop their price fast to keep up with Microsoft, so question is how much they test the airflow
7. Cutting down the costs further by using cheap parts, earlier breaking down of BluRay diodes etc.

Although I didn't think the original design of the Fat was all that, I'd still prefer it compared to the slim.

There is no B/C in either the 80gig or 160 gig current PS3's.
They are just like the 40 gig which didn't have it either.
Think people are confusing it with the old 80gig model that did have B/C emulation but current 80's do not.
It is cheaper due to the 45nm architecture to manufacture is the main reason it is able to be cut in cost not because it is a inferior product in component terms.
Wait until your beloved backward compatible systems start getting YLOD what are you going to do than, believe me it does happened and it happened to me on my 40 gig. I treat my equipment carefully and it was always well ventilated and didn't really do marathon gaming with it left on 24/7. The thermal paste Sony used in the older systems gets very dry and brittle after a year and half so if you want to keep your system alive I would put new paste on it now with some artic silver compound, otherwise Sony wants big money to repair your current system and lot of stories say you get a refurbished replacement and not your beloved b/c compatible model.
I fixed my 40 gig yellow light of death with a heat gun and redid the thermal paste and it fixed it fine but you'd be better to redo the thermal paste on the CPU before getting to a ylod stage.
I also have a JAP 60gig model launch console so I'm not knocking the B/C version owners but seriously...

My PS3 has 4 USB ports, not two, has SD, MM, and CF card slots, can run YDL, and can play PS2 games.

My PS3 isn't just better; it's genetically different.

Still, new PS3 owners are getting a hell of a deal. However, the concept that the Slim is better than mine is simply absurd.
