PS3 Slim Bitstreams HD audio codecs

Engadget Reports: Slowly, ever so slowly we're beginning to learn about the internal differences between Sony's new PS3 Slim and its chubby ancestry. We already knew that it supported BraviaLink while talk of "faster gaming" was introduced (suspiciously) yesterday; something that remains very much in doubt until we can confirm. Now we hear that the fatboy gone slim will bitstream Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio direct to your receiver. Hear that audio nerds? Bitstream...

doesn't effect me but great feature to have ps3 is still the best bd player simply because updates are simple frequent and guaranteed.

I was hoping the PS3 slim would have this feature. I am seriously contemplating replacing my current PS3 with PS3 slim (not because of this little feature tho, but becuase of the less power it uses).

If this is true im getting 2 of them

Antan5993d ago

This is quite a big deal to be honest! Top stuff

Sarcasm5992d ago

Wow! It sure is! Now instead of 7.1 DTS-HD MA, you get 7.1 DTS-HD MA with the little light on the receiver! /my name

People, this isn't really that big of news. The PS3 has always been able to do DTS-HD MA or Dolby TruHD. It's just decodes through LPCM which outputs EXACTLY the same audio quality.

Now the only difference when you bitstream, you see the logo on your receiver.

If people really wanted to see a logo, you can just press select while watching a movie, and in the top right it will show what audio codec is playing.

feel special to be one of the first to consume nextgen.

Vagrant_15993d ago

Means our AV units will finally do the decoding of HD codecs TrueDolbyHD and DTS-MA-HD and it will light up on your receiver now. Some will say it's not a big deal but I got nice AV and want it to do my processing

PS3 got a bad rap because of the price. I bought it day one (I was very lucky). A Blu-ray player was more expensive than the PS3 at the time around 800$+

badz14914d ago

And that was for a standalone player with no internet connectivity. A network enable BD players like the PS3 was, were around $1000 at the time

Mr Logic14d ago

That's true, but it gets worse. I remember seeing independent analysis from CNET or something like that. They concluded that PS3 was not only the cheapest, but also had the best video quality of any BD player.

DivineHand12514d ago

Good to see there is an improvement despite the challenges plaguing this generation.

At the end of year 5, the ps3 received a pricecut making the 160GB model $250 and the 320G GB model $300.

I miss those days when there was not so much demand for microchips and the prices of things generally came down.

Now everything seems to be a smart device with very few companies to supply the needed chips.

Why compare to the PS3? The machine was a total abortion.

Comparing to 4 would be best being it’s the previous generation and was hugely successful.

NotoriousWhiz13d ago

There is a ps5 to ps4 comparison. The PS4 currently has a narrow lead.

you are right, that's why it outsold 360

anast12d ago

Because it's being compared to everything...This is how this game writing goes...

gold_drake13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

we should also not forget what shitstorm the ps3 got cause of the price bk then

it was still a phenomenal console

Ninver13d ago

Western media did everything in their power to destroy the ps3. They shiited on its price and made fun of the CELL (I'm surprised there wasn't more dbz memes) calling it alien hardware. Still it gave us games like Uncharted 2 and TLOU.
