Sequels or new IP, which do you prefer?

Noe V writes...... Now I'm not happy with Bobby Kotick's take on sequels vs original IP. Then again I'm not keen with the praise heaped on most studio bosses anyhow. Most interviews give credit to the bosses for the successes of the publishers, rather than for the developers. This is the part of the entertainment industry that kills me. People with keen business sense like to talk about creative elements without necessarily understanding the nuances of the IP.

With the PS3 you get both... in spades. I'm down for new experiences all the time, that's the whole point of a new generation.

Mr_Controversy6128d ago

I just prefer a good game, whether they its a new ip or a sequel.

But for real now, enough with the Halo this and Halo that.

Tony P6128d ago

They wouldn't be reproducing sequels if customers didn't want these games reproduced. MW2 will be a blockbuster title despite what it does or doesn't do differently. It's our own fault when we vote with our currency that way. Of course I have nothing against it just because I'm not a fan. If people like that type of game, great for them.

The choice itself seems really circumstantial. I love a fantastic new IP, but if I love it, I'd probably want to play its sequel as well. It's not either/or for me at all.

sequels always suck

developers are never motivated to work on the same crap over and over again

thats why the new starwars suck thats why mgs1 is still made better then the rest of them

well actually if its a sequel with no story its probably better

ok then!

with story SEQUELS = SUCKS BALLS
without storys SEQuels = OK!

As long as there are noticeable diffrences between sequels. New ip's are always a good thing.

From article:
“A small segment of very vocal gamers say everything has to be new and different every year,” he says. “Actually, people are happy with existing franchises, provided you innovate within them.” The trick, once again, is to strike a balance: between the familiarity of a trusted brand and “innovative and inspiring” new features. Bobby Kotick via the Economist.

So basicly we won't see anything new from craptivision anytime soon.

I concour with Swiftshot93's list and would also add games like gears, shadow complex, Fable and such.

Sequels of good games. New IPs to wash away the taste of other bad IPs that should never have sequels.

Jaces6128d ago

I prefer the new IP's.

They're always fun and you never know what your going to get. Always being introduced to new ideas and gameplay is a rewarding and exciting experience.

I'd say sequels are great too, but only to finish the story that was begun in the first.

Since I love Uncharted and inFAMOUS so much I'll go with new Ip's but sequels to those same Ip's are a close second.

jwatt6128d ago

Yea Infamous was my surprise game of 09 and was my first game I got all Trophies unlocked. The good thing about new IPs is that they can surprise you because you don't know what to expect.

-Mezzo-6128d ago

I am interested in both, but slightly more interested in new IP's as this is the next gen thus there should be a lot of new IP's.

Awesome New Ip's So Far.

Uncharted,
InFAMOUS
Assassins Creed
MAG
Dead Space
Heavy Rain

Neoraf6128d ago

You forgot:

Valkyria Chronicles
Shadow Complex
Mass Effect
Lost Odyssey
Crackdown
Gears of War
Little Big Planet

Owning both HD console = True Gamer

-Mezzo-6127d ago

I would agree with.

Shadow Complex
Gears Of War
Mass Effect LBP.

memphis26128d ago

fan_of_gaming6128d ago

R2D26128d ago
